The internet's original social media guinea pig. Not hiding but my caution has been rewarded in my decade and a half on the socials, so I am sticking with it. Quit FB before it was cool.
I believe it is none of my business what you do to find happiness as long as you are not harming others and I will support your journey. My life's goal is to learn everything or die trying.

Another item I miss from my Navy days: I can't find a yellow, wooden handle, non-folding, utility knife?

In the Navy 🎶, the deck department used these for rope work. You could hammer the flat side to chip or cut clean, heat to melt poly-rope ends and scrape for years after they were dull.

It's been 15 years since I saw them. I could use another, but even Amazon doesn't list them. Most utility knives are folding now, not of this general quality.
Someone sells them. apparently?

LilPecan,
@LilPecan@mastodon.social avatar

@Rasta Try search "leather knives" on Amazon and see what you can find. Or search that term in general on the web. Your knife looks like knives I use for my leather work that I have sourced from Tandy. They aren't cheap but they're worth the price.

    @timrichards Maybe my first English teacher was Welsh? Doesn't explain how my partner was taught the same thing by French Canadian nuns teaching English though.

    The same oak leaf, dyed and polished. I liked it better before but you live and learn.

    Aiming for something different with my leather work, I designed a game sack. It has a leather cribbage board, cards, dice, Jenga, dominoes and a score pad: everything needed for a fun game night.

    The leather sack with contents as detailed in the post. Dice are in a leather dice shaker. Everything that is not made of leather is housed in a leather case, such as the dominoes, cards and Jenga pieces.

    My friend, Cal, couldn't find any "professionals" willing to repair his grandfather's belt, which he cherishes. I'm sure they were afraid because it's in such sorry condition.
    In the center you can see how bad the condition was. I had to cut off the buckle end to replace the snap so he can use it. It's revived with some dye and mink oil, much better than before, but it's still a century old so, after repairing it, I will surprise him by making a new, identical belt for everyday wear.

    LilPecan,
    @LilPecan@mastodon.social avatar

    I've done this for people several times (repaired hopelessly damaged goods) and love doing it. So far no one has been disappointed with the result. I'd love for this to be a subspecialty of mine but I get why professionals won't perform this work. We aren't miracle workers and can't completely reverse the ravages of time. It's important people are turned away several times before they hear about me, through word of mouth. It helps manage their expectations.

    LilPecan,
    @LilPecan@mastodon.social avatar

    It's not an exact match but hopefully close enough to please my friend. Still have to dye, edge finish and apply a finish before it's done.

    LilPecan,
    @LilPecan@mastodon.social avatar

    I've finished my friend's belt. It looks redder in the sunlight than it generally appears. This belt is meant to be an everyday wear in order to preserve his grandfather's belt. He can replace the buckle if he chooses. He has a large collection of belt buckles. I just thought it would be nice for him to have something else with his name on it since few novelties have the name Calixte on them.

    A close up of the leather belt buckle reading "Calixte." It is oval and reddish-brown.

    I got tired of my cocktail smoking kit rattling around in a box so I made a custom leather case for it. I was even able to some dense packing foam to make the insert. From conception to completion it took me about three hours. Nothing fancy but fulfills the purpose.

    Same case with dense foam insert holding four canisters of wood chips, cocktail smoker, steel wood chip insert and small tools.

    I'm working on a new handbag design. I'm supposed to work it up in canvas so I don't waste materials if I make a mistake or the design doesn't work out but I kind of suck at following rules.

    LilPecan,
    @LilPecan@mastodon.social avatar

    Despite not doing a mock up, my leather bag turned out well. The braided strap can be worn cross body style. I added a silver concho for a decorative element. I'll show the back and inside next.

    image/jpeg

    LilPecan,
    @LilPecan@mastodon.social avatar

    The back is unadorned. The reverse side of the strap is sueded leather. The strap is formed from a "mystery braid." It is braided without the three strands being separated at either end. (It's a PITA doing this on a strap this long, but I think worth it.) I added a matching tassell to the strap to spiff it up a little.

    LilPecan,
    @LilPecan@mastodon.social avatar

    The interior is made from thin Italian lambskin. There is a ring to which keys can be attached, a zippered pocket and two open pockets. A magnetic snap closes the bag. The lining is finished with no raw edges.
