This is beyond ridiculous: the French govt demands the bouquinistes move "for security reasons" during the Paris Olympics https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2023/jul/29/paris-booksellers-angry-at-plans-to-hide-their-stalls-during-olympics

So they show off Paris by removing such an essentially Parisian form of bookselling? Je dit non!

“The fear o’ hell’s a hangman’s whip
To haud the wretch in order;
But where ye feel your honour grip,
Let that aye be your border.”

Robert Burns died in 1796. He is the best known of the poets who have written in the Scots language, although much of his writing is in a "light Scots language” of English, accessible to an audience beyond Scotland. via @wikipedia

@gutenberg_org @wikipedia hmmm, referring to Scots as a dialect rather than language is rather offensive to many Scottish people, and insulting to our rich cultural heritage. Poor choice of wording, Gutenberg.

@dgar Lou Reed once came into my old bookshop. My entire interaction with him was probably less than ten seconds - I said hi, he replied " how you doing?". That was it. I don't care, I got to meet Lou!!!

I had no idea Dykes To Watch Out For was being adapted into an audio series. Loved those comics.

This month marks a decade since we lost Iain Banks, far, far, far too damned early. Delighted to see the Guardian celebrating his work and selecting their faves from his "literary" and SF output https://www.theguardian.com/books/2023/jun/29/where-to-start-with-iain-banks

Still miss bumping into Iain, as lovely a bloke as you're ever likely to meet, and a bloody brilliant writer.

LordWoolamaloo,
@LordWoolamaloo@mastodon.scot avatar

@EmbraAgain no, you hot his essence right there. Years ago I was having a very hard time with firmer bookshop being very nasty to me. Iain organized bunch of Scottish writers who did open letter to press on my side, later invited me along with him, his other half and Ken Macleod for big curry night to boost my morale. Very decent & caring bloke

For those who think that privatizing our public water systems is a good idea, I offer this counterpoint...
Margaret Thatcher privatized all of the UK's water utilities in the 1980s, and now we see the consequences of decades of underinvestment, shareholders stripping dividends out while rates rise and improvements are ignored, and rising debt.

LordWoolamaloo,
@LordWoolamaloo@mastodon.scot avatar

@petergleick not all of the UK. Scotland refused to do this, sensibly. Our water companies remain public

The Kelvingrove Pipe Organ. Originally commissioned for the 1901 Glasgow International Exhibition, it was later moved to the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. It has 2889 organ pipes, but the ones you can see are just part of a decorative facade. The actual sound-producing pipes are hidden behind it.

LordWoolamaloo,
@LordWoolamaloo@mastodon.scot avatar

@thisismyglasgow On a visit a few years ago, I walked up to the wee room with Dali's amazing Christ on the Cross painting. Amazingly I had the space to myself for a few moments, and just then the organ started playing as I stared at the painting. Just a perfect moment.

what a surprise, the vile Boris breached the ministerial code in accepting new job at the Daily Hate https://theguardian.com/politics/live/2023/jun/16/boris-johnson-partygate-report-rishi-sunak-damian-green-vote-conservatives-uk-politics-live

Meant to clear new jobs with committee to avoid former ministers cashing in on their previous govt job, Boris only told them 30 mins beforehand... Total disdain for rules and expected behaviour by an entitled bilgebag.

We had Steve and Anne Brusatte for an all-ages event on dinosaurs and mammals, with books for adults and children. Huge fun

What did you do at work today? Made kids interested in reading, got to handle dino fossils... I do love my work

Delighted to hear from fine @orbitbooks crew that long-gestating project to bring The Culture drawings of the late, & still much-missed Iain M Banks to print, now has a November 2023 release.

"Faithfully reproduced from sketchbooks kept in the 1970s & 80s, these annotated original illustrations depict the ships, habitats, geography, weapons and language of Banks' Culture series of novels in incredible detail."

Interior pages from the forthcoming The Culture - The Drawings, collecting sketches and art and notes about his bestselling Culture series of novels by the late Iain M Banks

Interesting piece on the Romans in https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-65388673

I've always been aware of this history, as the town I grew up, on the edge of Glasgow, was a major fort on the Antonine Wall. Got young me interested in history, learning that it didn't all happen "far away", but also on my doorstep.

It's 7:30 am, May 11. The railing is parallel to the street which runs north-south, so I'm facing due east. The shadows now have a distinct tilt to the south which means the sun is rising from the northeast. Northeast! I'm probably the only person in Seattle who has noticed or cares.

LordWoolamaloo,
@LordWoolamaloo@mastodon.scot avatar

@dpscifi Living in Scotland, the shift of light is incredibly noticeable through seasons. I delight in watching it, and photographing it. It's not just angle, the quality of the light differs depending on season and sun's orientation. Light quality here in spring and autumn is just remarkable.

Well, when not raining anyway! As a Seattle person I'm sure you can empathise with that!

@mcnees Our wee Indy bookshop's motto is "we read past our bedtimes".
We do a lot with young readers. One day after helping little 7 year old moppet to pick a new book, she leaned into me & whispered "I read past my bedtime too!"
We were delighted.
