Shock news, most of the youngest billionaires on the planet were - gasp! - born wealthy already https://boingboing.net/2024/04/04/new-study-shows-that-literally-every-billionaire-under-30-was-born-wealthy-also-water-wet.html

Goodness me, I am gobsmacked to learn most of them earned this ridiculous status of obscene wealth by the privilege of birth and not by the great capitalist mantra of hard work and dedication, from rages to riches!

The Nazi's Beer Hall Putsch took place a hundred years ago today https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0-hDmm2itO0&ab_channel=MarkFeltonProductions
It's disturbing to any of us who read history to look around today and see far, far too many echoes ot those times being repeated...

what a surprise, the vile Boris breached the ministerial code in accepting new job at the Daily Hate https://theguardian.com/politics/live/2023/jun/16/boris-johnson-partygate-report-rishi-sunak-damian-green-vote-conservatives-uk-politics-live

Meant to clear new jobs with committee to avoid former ministers cashing in on their previous govt job, Boris only told them 30 mins beforehand... Total disdain for rules and expected behaviour by an entitled bilgebag.

Met Police at one point tweeted that they has "intelligence" that some they pre-emptively arrested had rape alarms that they could have thrown to scare horses in coronation parade.

This remind me of Blair's "intelligence" that "proved" WMDs in Iraq, ie both total nonsense to justify heavy handed policy.

And given Met's terrible record of sexually abusive officers, any rape alarm would likely be to protect against assault by an officer.

This month marks a decade since we lost Iain Banks, far, far, far too damned early. Delighted to see the Guardian celebrating his work and selecting their faves from his "literary" and SF output https://www.theguardian.com/books/2023/jun/29/where-to-start-with-iain-banks

Still miss bumping into Iain, as lovely a bloke as you're ever likely to meet, and a bloody brilliant writer.

Just saw well-known author celebrating seeing their book on sale at reduced price in a supermarket, and the works by other authors it was next to. Clearly not grasping that those are sales giant supermarket chains take from actual bookshops.

Indy bookshops can't offer discounts like the supermarkets. On the other hand we carry full range of books, support authors & constantly recommending books and writers to people. Unlike supermarkets.

Sigh.

Happy birthday, Hubble.

Launched on this day way back in 1990 aboard the Shuttle Discovery, giving humanity a remarkable window on to the awe-inspiring wonders of our universe, allowing us to witness even the stellar nurseries, birthplace of the stars themselves.

Today's un-asked for prompt by @Microsoft on the Windows search bar is "generate an AI image for polar bear day". Coming after much discussion about how the power & water demands of AI servers are contributing to climate change. Which threatens polar bears especially right now.

I mean what next, will MS suggest I celebrte World Book Day with some pages from favourite reading and a box of matches??? Clueless eejits.

Authors, a reminder, when you are promoting new works, please don't just default to posting a link to Spamazon. Bezos has more than enough money.

You can direct folks to actual bookstores, local Indy bookstores & bookshopdotorg, which allows you to support local bookshops too (although direct ordering is best, then they get all of the sale) https://uk.bookshop.org/
