Do you know Stanislaw Lem, the fabulous Polish author?

He wrote several stories about and artificial intelligence (real one, not ).

Among many others, I love the hilarious "The Washing Machine Tragedy", as it highlights the relationship between , and .

Written in 1963, it foreshadows prophetically many of current developments.

In the story, two corporations begin to "enhance" their washing machines with all kind of "smart" tech to the point,

There was a time, when I dearly loved and , and they will always have a sweet spot in my heart for the many laughs and for all the cultural heritage, they left us.

However: Whenever I now grab one of their , their style and language feels terribly outdated and, frankly, boring to me.

@mina I love Pratchett just as the next guy, but some books are just better than others. I remember that Moving Pictures and Soul Music were very labored, and the Nightwatch books were always a hit, except "Guards! Guards!", which was merely good.
So maybe you picked a "wrong" one?

I'm fine with the soft, whirring spaceship sounds that some EVs emit as a safety feature to alert people that they're moving. The new Dodge Charger EV comes with a deafening 126 dB roar, which is just plain obnoxious.

Imagine a computer following its programming and its programmers getting away with calling unwanted outputs a ”hallucination”.

And then other people start calling anything they didn’t want or expect from the computer a hallucination. As if the programmers are completely unaccountable for their programming.

It’s happening every single day and its like an adventure in Wonderland.

Im ländlichen Raums sterben die Bibliotheken.

Das ist vor allem in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern zu beobachten: Gab es 2002 noch 154 öffentliche Bibliotheken, schrumpfte die Zahl bis Ende 2022 auf 94.

Wie sieht es bei euch aus? Nutzt ihr noch Bibliotheken?

@mina @HistoPol @NDR Weswegen ich bei einer Fortbildung für Bibs neulich echte kognitive Dissonanzen hatte: die Dozentin war total energiegeladen und hat wirklich praxisnahe, tolle und leicht umsetzbare Mint-Einheiten vorgestellt. Bei denen ich hinterher erst dachte, das gehört ja eigentlich in die Schule, und dann, dass dieser Mint-Kram genau dieses runterbrechen von Bildung ist. Weiterhin zeigte sie Folien mit Übersichten zu Komepetenze vom "World Economic Forum" und der Siemens-Stiftung...

@HistoPol Mehr Philosophie und Ethik in der Schule immer. Ich bin für mich überzeugt, dass letztendlich der Kapitalismus ursächlich ist für die Sinn- und letztlich alle andere Krisen (insbesondere eben Bildung und auch Gesundheitsversorgung), daher finde ich es für mich schwierig, diesen außen vor zu lassen.

Stelle immer wieder fest, dass jüngere Menschen oft überraschend wenig technikaffin sind. Das liegt vielleicht daran, dass sie mit funktionierender Technik groß geworden sind?

Soll heißen in der "Gründerzeit" des Internets etc. musste halt auch oft gefummelt werden bis etwas funzte. Insofern wäre das dann eine normale Entwicklung.

Wenn die digitale Sozialisation über geschlossene mobile Betriebssysteme läuft, woher sollen die Kids wissen, was eine Dateibiat, und was man mitvder machen kann? Verschlimmert wird das alles dadurch, das Tablets (Ipads) als das A und O in der schulischen Medienbildung gelten.

    Im Nachhinein betrachtet hab ich den Eindruck in einer ziemlich entpolitisierten Phase aufgewachsen zu sein. So in den späten 90ern oder frühen 2000er als ich Teenie war, war Politik oder Gesellschaft kein wirklich großes Thema? Dabei waren Lichtenhagen, Solingen und co ja auch erst ein paar Jahre her.
    Und trotzdem war ich immer der Weirdo, weil ich alles über WW2 und die NS-Zeit wusste. Weil ich mir das alles angelesen habe. (In Büchern, nicht im Internet 😅)

    Meine Erinnerung, mein Gefühl an die Schulzeit ist, dass ich damals den Eindruck hatte, dass die wichtigen Themen abgeschlossen, bekannt, common sense sind, und es nur noch Zeit bräuchte, bis sich alles auf ganz breiter Ebene durchgesetzt hat. Es war klar: Rassismus, Sexismus ist übel, Klimawandel eine Bedrohung, die bearbeitet wird, dimen Ausfälle von übriggebliebenen Nazis wird entsprechend begegnet. Knallhartkapitalismus ...

    Ich bin ja letztes Jahr in der Gedenkstätte Auschwitz durch die erhaltene Gaskammer und über die Rampe gelaufen und unter dem Tor mit der Aufschrift "Arbeit macht Frei" hindurch und hab wirklich lange nicht so viel geheult wie an dem Tag, weil es wirklich nicht zu ertragen ist an einem Ort von Verbrechen so unglaublichen Ausmaßes zu stehen. Ich kann wirklich nicht in Worte fassen was ich über Leute denke die rassistische und antisemitische "Witze" über diesen Ort machen.

    @FrauMaja @Thea_gruen @usi So super das im Einzelfall ist, es ist ein Kreuz, das am Ende alles immer an engagierten einzelnen Leuten hängt.
    Ich kann mich an nichts einschneidendes erinnern, außer das natürlich die Nazizeit an sich behandelt wurde, inklusive des obligatorischen Schindlers Liste-Besuchs im Kino. An eine ausführliche Nachbehandlung kann ich mich wiederum nicht erinnern.

    @glassbottommeg @gamingonlinux See, for instance, the years long enshittification of the WoW Launcher to the Blizzard Launcher, which in its latest iteration does not show you the last played/only favourited game, but defaults to an ad page. BUT you can still start your game with one click from there.
