Turns out I like an eclectic mix of serious news, lewd smut and good puns. Cats, food, and interesting art also tick my boxes. Big fan of good Alt text.

(Updated now I've been here a while and worked out how I want to use the 'don...)

I was very unimpressed to receive tory party propaganda, in the form of an unsolicited personalised letter from the Prime Minister. That was nothing compared to my teenage daughter's ire when she read it. Good to know her English lessons aren't going to waste...!

The second page of a political letter. It has been extensively corrected in green pen. At the bottom, in bold black ink, it says "Learn how to write first. There is a thing called a comma, so you don't have to use short sentences constantly. Even semi-colons would be better; at least that's somewhat persuasive, you Little Bitch."

Since I have my own classroom instead of a shared space, I had offered it up to one of the other teachers while I was away. Not only did he rearrange how my student desks are laid out, he rearranged MY desk. He stowed my keyboard and mouse in my piles of shawls and blankets. Even moved my waste bin! Never again.

MintSpies,

@MizFidd Nooooo - I hate it when that happens in my classroom. How rude of them!

@andrewnorthrocks This is bloody excellent, not least for its epic bari saxing, which always gets my vote.

🧵 I'm browsing 'Zivilverteidigung,' the Swiss national defence book from 1969.
The Swiss took their nuclear defence very seriously. Many buildings (my own included) are still built today with nuclear bunkers in the cellars.
The UK's own 'Protect & Survive' booklet was 30 pages, whereas, the Swiss 'Zivilverteidigung' is 320 pages.
Great graphic design, too. Here's a thread of random images.

What will be your of choice? And what are your reasons?

I bet that there are other that are not available on the official app.

@ray1705 I use Megalodon - I liked the interface best out of the apps I tried when I first signed up, and inertia is a powerful force!

What is something you discovered or got into later in life (hobby, interest, activity) that brings you a lot of joy or excitement? I’ve gotten stuck in my routine and identity. I’d like to branch out and do a little self discovery, but it’s been difficult with two kids under 5.

MintSpies,
@MintSpies@mastodon.social avatar

@bryan I taught myself saxophone as an adult and joined a jazz band, which brings me huge amounts of joy every week. Good luck in your voyage of discovery!

Tell me a silly/funny childhood story!

I'll start:

One time in Sunday School, the teacher was talking about the difference between humans and animals, and mentioned that Animals had Tails and humans didn't. I let her know this was not true, because my Dad had a tail, just in the front, instead of the back. The teacher was silent for several seconds, and tried to correct me in a church appropriate way, but I doubled down, and insisted that my little brothers also had front tails too. This got so heated that the teacher had to go get my parents to take me out of Sunday School.

MintSpies,
@MintSpies@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr my aunt and uncle took me to the ballet when I was aged about 7 or 8. The whole thing entranced me. However, as the orchestra went quiet and the principal male dancer first entered, dressed in the traditional costume of tunic, tights and a cod piece, all that could be heard was my piercing voice: "Look at his massive willy!"

The stark issue behind the ONS' problems with employment figures is the decline in responses to the Labour Force Survey from around 50% to around 15% in a decade.

People seem unwilling to offer their time to be interviewed for the data on working;

this maybe an increased suspicion of 'researchers' & surveillance by the state; a mismatch between interviewers working days & the subjects; off-the-books works, or an overhang from lockdown(s)?

Next: paying interviewees?

MintSpies,
@MintSpies@mastodon.social avatar

@ChrisMayLA6 You can guarantee that the current government would also consider interview payments as an income source, which could mess up no end of benefit payments...

BACK ON THIS BULLSHIT AGAIN:

WE NOW TURN TO THE ICY WASTELAND AT EARTH'S SOUTHERN POLE. WHICH THEY HAVE NAMED "NO BEARS" IN A DEAD LANGUAGE. YOU WON'T BELIEVE WHY.

THE FIRST THING YOU NOTICE IS THAT THIS PLACE VISIBLY SUCKS. NO TREES OR SWAMPS, NOT EVEN MUCH PLANT LIFE TO SPEAK OF. JUST PENGUINS. LOTS AND LOTS OF PENGUINS. DUMPY LITTLE BASTARDS. IF I HAD TO GUESS, IT'S SAY THEY TASTE AWFUL. HUMANS LIKE TO EXTERMINATE INCONVENIENT ANIMALS AND ENSLAVE DELICIOUS ONES, AND THEY'VE MORE OR LESS ABANDONED THE PENGUINS TO THIS BEARLESS HELLSCAPE.

    Laura Kenny saying she’s realised she doesn’t want to ride a bike anymore, I wonder if she actually literally means she doesn’t want to literally ride a bike anymore, or if she just means she doesn’t want to ride competitively anymore?

    If the former, that’s quite sad, if participation in elite sport can end up taking away somebody’s joy for doing something as a leisure activity.

    @simon I teach at a school with a lot of elite (national level) swimmers, and many of them don't enjoy the sport - it's so sad. I think the relentless grind of daily training breaks nearly all of them.

    Today is Safer Internet Day, so we were learning about online safety at my guide unit this week (age 10-14). There was a game with balloons representing messages that had to be protected from being intercepted, but we also had a chat about how to keep safe. They were pretty clued up on not sharing too many personal details and keeping accounts private, but we also had a conversation about choosing good passwords, using password managers and 2FA, which they didn't know about.

    MintSpies,
    @MintSpies@mastodon.social avatar

    @rachelngibbs This was one of the things I loved best about being a Guider: giving young people the information to make positive changes in their own lives. You're doing good work!
