I’m old enough to remember when smoking (and smoke) was everywhere, and the idea that smokers might ever be asked or made to stop was seen as absurd. Many kids (including me) got horrible bronchitis every single year and had other sorts of breathing problems all the time. Many parents (and other adults) died early.

Tell me a silly/funny childhood story!

I'll start:

One time in Sunday School, the teacher was talking about the difference between humans and animals, and mentioned that Animals had Tails and humans didn't. I let her know this was not true, because my Dad had a tail, just in the front, instead of the back. The teacher was silent for several seconds, and tried to correct me in a church appropriate way, but I doubled down, and insisted that my little brothers also had front tails too. This got so heated that the teacher had to go get my parents to take me out of Sunday School.

As someone who played SxSW multiple times and mostly enjoyed it, I would like to say bands should drop out of SxSW because it is in Texas and Greg Abbott is the governor and his party literally voted to greenlight alliances with Texas neo-Nazis because they, his party, are fucking neo-Nazis.

I can't figure out if mastodon is a high context culture or not. People seem to be expected to give long introductions and do a lot of identity/positionality disclosure, but also an enormous reply guy culture which is defined by low context drive-by. Conversational turn-taking is extremely low compared to other platforms ime, but depth-seeking is high. What an interesting mix.

*obviously, these experiences are all situated within my own network effects, and I'm not well networked here.

@grimalkina to me the most interesting thing about Mastodon is that anyone's experience here really is whatever they make it out to be.

Since there is no algorithm whatsoever, it's 100% up to each user to curate a space they enjoy and find valuable.

It's worked out brilliantly for me. But I understand why others might have a tougher time adapting to it, especially given the most recent social landscapes that are out there.

Okay, since I'm on laundry today, a little story.

When hubs and I first got married, we were very much enjoying our little Honeymoon Bubble, and we were being lazy as Hell. We didn't do many chores, but the laundry we really let go. We weren't wearing many clothes at home anyway, so why bother. Anyhow, after weeks we finally reached the swimming suit bottoms situation, and decided it was time. It was loads and loads of laundry that needed done, so I had my husband back the trunk of the car up to a window of the house, then he popped the trunk, and I started tossing laundry out of the window into the trunk. We went to the bank, got about $30 bucks in quarters, and found the emptiest laundry mat we could, and did it all in one fell swoop. We folded it all and loaded it back into the car using those wheeled laundry carts. We never let it get that bad again, and decided it was time to be adults, and do regular chores, but it still makes me laugh imagining what the neighbors and the laundry attendant thought.

I was walking in my neighborhood today and I was going to talk to somebody in their front yard about something on their house. As I got closer I noticed he was wearing a MAGA hat and I just kept on walking.

This is why I really love the MAGA gear. People love to announce who they are and I appreciate it.

I talked to two friends who have Threads last night. They say it's absolutely dead. Nothing is going on.

Millions of sign-ups, zero engagement. It's like Google+ all over again.

I'm not on Threads and have no desire to be there.

I just wanted to let you know that Mastodon is still winning in so many ways, even if it doesn't always feel like it.

People are so insufferable. There's a petition going around my neighborhood (eyeroll immediately) about opposing new aprtments. It's clearly run by MAGA types. The opposition is veiled in school safety and better education but you can probably figure out the real reasons of entitlement and racism.

The hilarious part is they pretend to care about schools but continue to vote for Republicans all over this state who not only don't care about that but also want to crush public schools for good.
