Y'all want to hear a fact that really changed the way I thought about homelessness?

Half of all homeless people were in the foster system at some point. Social Workers often call the foster system The Highway to Homelessness. If you ever had a point in your life where you had to live with friends or family to for a short time to get back on your feet, remember that is a privilege that not everyone had.

@Vincarsi @not2b @textualdeviance @Rayston @RickiTarr yet they elect those drug taking bums to parliament.

It is allowed if you are rich, tory or a famous musician.

ChrisMayLA6, to disability
@ChrisMayLA6@zirk.us avatar

Across the political Right, the narrative is that disability benefits (primarily Personal Independence Payments; PIPs) are too easy to get & are often paid to the 'undeserving'... however, in reality nearly half of applicants are rejected, rising to over two thirds for endometriosis (a gendered dimension I'll leave you to ponder), but with high rates of rejections over-turned on appeal (often with the same evidence).

More Tory lies, callousness & inhumanity

@purplepadma @ChrisMayLA6 @Research_FTW it is cheaper to allow the claims than pay for the beaurocracy to make claiments jump through hoops.

The cruelty is the point.

Britain's record on homelessness is world beating, just not in a good way.

We've the highest recorded levels of homelessness in the developed world; while other counties have seen (albeit slow) declines in homelessness, since 2010 the UK's rate has been accelerating away.

The housing crisis has many dimensions, but here there's a direct correlation between the arrival of the current Tory govt. & massive increases!

The party of landlords is working for them & doing nothing for us!

#housing

Chart: Britain has by far the highest rate of homelessness in the developed world. Rate of homelessness per 10,000 people (2023 or latest). UK - 52/10,000 Belgium & France (next ranked) 32/10,00 then all over states listed (in descending order), below 30/10,000: Czechia (27), Germany (26), USA (19), NZ (13), Australia (12), Canada (10), Portugal (10), Denmark (6), Poland (5), Sweden (5), Spain (5), Norway (3), Finland (1)

Thebratdragon,
@Thebratdragon@mastodon.scot avatar

@ChrisMayLA6 and I say again, the cruelty is the point.

That should be Starmers election slogan.

'With the tories, cruelty is the point'

but he can't after admitting one of the cruelest into Labour.

So the Migrant Advisory Committee, after a 14 week investigation has found 'no evidence' of any deliberate abuse of the international student visa scheme;

they're coming here to study.

As the FT delicately puts it:

this has 'placed Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in a bind, forcing him to either confront those on the Conservative right who want it scrapped, or ignore the advisory group'!

Watch this space.... which way he jumps will tell us a lot about the future of the (rump of) the Tory party

They donated to him & offered to pay for private investigators to help break up the demonstrations.

The group included Howard Schultz, Michael Dell, Bill Ackman & Joshua Kushner, with Daniel Lubetzky, Daniel Loeb, Len Blavatnik & Joseph Sitt also associated.

@TessRants @Nfoonf @RickiTarr @neingeist add in both gospel and church music, and more Sousa than you think and 100 other influences. The Bach comment is accurate though, syncopation which is at the core of jazz is also at the core of Bach, as is riffing on a theme, see the Goldberg variations.

All music has greater and lesser influences, and all of them entwined.

@latelesley @ScotHomestead @simon_brooke once palestine is formally recognised, UN peacekeepers can hold the borders.

one of the reasons Israel fights so hard to prevent that happening.

Thebratdragon,

@simon_brooke @latelesley @ScotHomestead Hamas offered a release of all hostages on oct 9th, in return for a return to the 1966 borders and a recognised Palestinian state.

@ScotHomestead @Jhughes1 @simon_brooke @latelesley Hamas was wrong to use such violence. But it is not Hamas made mass graves being excavated.

The Israeli government with its policy of encouraging Israeli settlers to just take Palestinian land, and treat Palestinians as third class and less than human is also equally culpable.

    Choosing to be 'neutral' - while active genocides are happening, in more than one area of the world - is choosing to be a coward.

    Inaction, is in itself a conscious action.
    Silence only helps oppressors & not the oppressed.

    Grow some fu*king courage.
    Start making some more noise, against multiple crimes against humanity!
    Stand up, speak up for more than yourself & a paycheque. Many of us have already taken risks & we're marginalized folks. Don't tell me that you don't have any personal power!
