Most BLM protesters were white people advocating for Black civil rights.♥️ All their lives, they thought that they had the 1st amendment right to protest, because they had seen white supremacists march without being beaten by cops. They didn't realize that the right to free speech depends heavily on what you are speaking about, and who you are speaking for.

Now I'm seeing college professors and students learn the same lesson about what US cops will do to you if you speak up for the wrong thing.

Uair,
@Uair@autistics.life avatar

@mekkaokereke

I was working in NYC in 2k4 for the republican convention. At the time, something like 85% of new yorkers thought bush at least allowed 9/11 if not orchestrated it. Protesters were kept corralled in razorwire topped chain link pens called "free speech zones". Of course, I was, like, "isn't the whole country a free speech zone?"

I also saw a jackbooted cop carrying a P90. I must've missed the memo where beat cops were allowed to carry full auto.

I'm a 59 year old African American woman. I've desegregated a town, a school system and many other spaces. When I discuss racism in this nation, I'm not going to ameliorate my speech for the comfort of anyone. I don't exist to comfort others about the reality of what I was born into - what we all live in together. If that's a problem for you, I suggest you embark on some self-reflection to determine what your actual role is within this system.

I will never understand why we are expected to discuss the most horrible things in the politest of language.

Get fucking angry, people! Anger is a gift. It makes change.

There should be a word for the very specific type of shame that happens when a person that knows what's up (👍🏿), hopes to be nominated alongside highly talented but underrepresented people that they admire, only to be horrified and ashamed as they themselves are nominated, while the underrepresented people that they look up to, are not.🙂🙃

Adele -> Beyonce.

Ryan Gosling -> Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie.

Happens a lot. 🤷🏿‍♂️

I beg to differ, a lil'. I'm white and grew up in a belligerently racist home town. There was a hard wall between Black and white, socially. However, i read the fucking newspaper. I can't remember /not/ knowing cops shot Black people for fun, way before Rage Against the Machine were out of high school.

Any white person who didn't know this was chasing ignorance, then same as now.

The footer on my email reads:

Truly and honestly, I have a great time here, because you all make it great. You boost, you reply, you encourage, and inspire! It is crazy to me that I get to talk to people from all over the world every day. I get to be friends with people I'll probably never actually get to physically meet. I was born into a pre-internet world, and this still feels a little like a miracle to me.

Uair,

All night every night for me. I was in my early 20s and developed what minimal social skills I possess over ICQ.

It gave me an interesting attitude. If you like me great, we'll talk. If not I don't take it personal and move on to the next person. This baffles pretty much everyone. Other autistic people can sometimes see it.

Uair,
@Uair@autistics.life avatar

@justafrog @mentallyalex @RickiTarr

ICQ was sold to AOL and became AOL IM. Removing the "find me a single-serving friend" function caused me to abandon, but I can understand why your boss wouldn't want you to be able to socialize on his time.

Uair,
@Uair@autistics.life avatar

@RickiTarr

You missed the early days of the net. ICQ was awesome--just a little text window that could connect with another English speaker online somewhere in the world whenever you wanted. I had a globe spanning circle of friends, although half of them were feds or researchers or data miners or some kind of not-real person. Same as today--half the "people" on your feed are constructs, and it's wise to remember this.

It's nice to have that back.

I love this song:

No...dredging in the depths as I type, but I might've smoked that brain cell.

I remember the typewriter clacks you could have it make on each keystroke. I /still/ use ICQ's means of indicating italics. It's now a personal style and I've never explicated it to anyone before.

Rapper Meek Mill is wondering out loud if Africans have access to streaming music apps like Spotify, and if so, if they listen to his music.

There aren't enough stories about the Africans working at big tech companies, but there are a lot of us. There are many Ghanaians, South Africans, Kenyans, and Nigerians 🙋🏿‍♂️, working in tech.

I often remind folks that Nigerian 7th grade math curriculum includes binary, octal, hexadecimal, statistics and data, algebra, and geometry.

Ummm...look into the history of public pools. White people will keep their kids from being able to swim just to make sure no Black kids get a chance.

I really can't follow this with anything pithier than the raw fact. No way to be clever on this one. It's just raw shittiness.

The cruelty is the point.

It's not all white people. Probably not even a majority. Probably wasn't even then. The bullies set policy in the US.

We have lots of great reasons to change from fossil fuels to renewables, but one underappreciated one is that oil money funds a disproportionately large portion of the resurgence of white supremacy.

Data centers in Northern Virginia are using “absurd amounts of water”

“The region is the world’s largest data center hub, with over 300 facilities processing almost 70 percent of global digital information, each using as much as 5 million gallons of water per day. And because cooling methods often rely on evaporation, the water does not go back into wastewater systems. “Data centers rank among the top 10 water-consuming industries in the United States”

The little people are realizing that stored media are important. We want our own copy of our favorite songs so the enshittifiers and hackers cant fuck it up.

How long before serious shit abandons the cloud entirely rather than deal with the drawbacks?

I'm a big fan of regulation, but I bet we can kill data centers entirely by eliminating demand.

Yeah, there's not much to do with ambition any more. Chase money? Naaah.

AuDHD + cPTSD. Those three go together. On a 5 scale, I'd say I'm 2.5 on ADD, 3 on autism, and 4 on trauma. Maybe 4.5.

Add to that a lifetime of near-to-total isolation and the fact that I grew up without a sibling, cousin, religion, or culture, and I'm just done in.

Weed and video games. They can nullify a whole lifetime's ambition. Why do I need to nullify my ambition? Well, I don't trust the internet enough to stay up for the aurora last night. I figured I was being punked.

I'm an autodidactic polymath.

I'm some kind of online oracle, but don't know how or why. I'm probably one of those fucked-up CIA experiments from the 70s. They make movies about me.

I was raised atheist. The Matrix is religious power, albeit run by secular agency, and I was born outside it. I'm stuck in the desert of the real.

#housing @actuallyautistic

Nothing makes sense any more. It is $1050/mo for a campsite with an electric hookup and $550/mo for non-subsidized government housing in a converted hotel room with kitchen, tub/shower, and queen bed.

My only guess is that they are earning over $500/mo datamining me through the "free" wifi.

Tell me the story of the last time you committed an act of kindness in 500 characters or less.

There’s nothing wrong with bragging about creating kindness. There’s nothing honorable about not sharing the joy of creating kindness.

We need to uplift and encourage people who create kindness in their daily lives.

So tell us your story. It doesn’t have to be something big. It can be something as simple as helping someone carry a bag of groceries.

How did you create kindness this week?
