One of the teams I've been working with to climb the performance management maturity ladder is...Edge!?!

We build a lot of the browser out of web "stuff" these days (think bookmarks, history, downloads, settings, new-tab-page, etc.), and moving away from React to a modern Web Components + HTML-first architecture has had a huge benefit for users, particularly folks on low-end hardware:

Good morning to readers, Kyiv remains in Ukrainian hands.

Today’s issue – in honor of AAPI heritage month – revolves around what it’s like to be an Asian journalist in Ukraine.

... in a weird way, I found it liberating.

ABC news have decided to take on the "electric cars aren't really better for the environment" misinfo.

The analysis seems to be fairly thorough, and has been tailored to the Australian situation.

Their conclusion is the lifetime CO₂ emissions for a mid-sized electric SUV are at least 2-3 times lower (depending on state) than a comparable petrol SUV, with the difference becoming larger if the owner has solar power at home.

There's this idea that has stuck with me since the early days working with John Resig on the jQuery team, when he shared that the end goal of the library should be to make itself unnecessary (in jQuery's case by influencing practices and standards). Some polyfills took that idea further by using feature checks to silently exit once their API gained native browser support. Today's popular frameworks address different problems, but it feels like a similar moment for thoughtful planning nonetheless

Despite their CEO, https://kagi.com appears to be the current best/only option for search.**

👎 Google search is not the solution.

👎 Bing search is not the solution.

👎 DDG (it's just Bing) search is not the solution.

If someone finds a reasonable alternative that isn’t Google, Bing, or DDG, then I am all ears because I have no loyalty to Kagi.

** - I'm annoyed by this and their occasional Brave API usage, but this is also not an invite to pile on. https://mastodon.social/

One of the fun parts of being a mirror operator is that you get to deal with China Mobile using ISO download mirrors to fix their traffic ratios with other ISPs at peering points.

Looks like they've moved to using Slackware now...

For those who aren’t aware, Microsoft have decided to bake essentially an infostealer into base Windows OS and enable by default.

From the Microsoft FAQ: “Note that Recall does not perform content moderation. It will not hide information such as passwords or financial account numbers."

Info is stored locally - but rather than something like Redline stealing your local browser password vault, now they can just steal the last 3 months of everything you’ve typed and viewed in one database.

I got ahold of the Copilot+ software.

Recall uses a bunch of services themed CAP - Core AI Platform. Enabled by default.

It spits constant screenshots (the product brands then “snapshots”, but they’re hooked screenshots) into the current user’s AppData as part of image storage.

The NPU processes them and extracts text, into a database file.

The database is SQLite, and you can access it as the user including programmatically. It 100% does not need physical access and can be stolen.

It comes up a lot as people are rightly confused, but if you wonder what problem Microsoft are trying to solve with Recall:

It isn't them being evil, it's business leaders who are middle aged and can't remember what they're doing driving decision making about which problems to solve.

A huge amount of business leaders are dudes who have no idea what the fuck is happening. This leads to the Recall feature.

Microsoft exists in and is driven by that bubble.

"I think the chances of Sam Alito recusing himself from any of these cases is effectively whatever the Kelvin equivalent of 0% is. But that isn’t a reason to let the matter drop. That’s classic policy literalism. There should be an investigation. There should be everything. Because that’s how politics works.... We need to investigate Alito’s support for the Jan. 6th coup attempt and demand he recuse himself from any case tied to the coup attempt."

There’s long been a notion of two internets when it comes to China and the rest of the world where super apps like WeChat reign while Google is non-existent.

It’s now the inverse where products like EVs and smartphones are barred from the US which are competitive with US ones. And these products are giving the American ones a run for their money.

@subugoe @historikerinnen @histodons @medievodons My student has just discovered what looks like 18th-century censorship in this manuscript! The miniature of Yusuf and Zuleika having sex on their wedding night has been obscured by a carefully cut, glued and decorated piece of paper.

Open page of a manuscript in Arabic, with a colourful miniature of two people having sex partially hidden by a flap of paper.
