https://mastodon.lol has already shut down, but it didn't shut down cleanly (it didn't send a request to other servers to purge its content).

It seems that we the admins will need to manually purge its content from our servers, so not only remote media and posts are deleted, but also accounts and posts interacted with.

Happy from my little clowder!

The past several months have been leaner than usual. I set up a Ko-Fi account, etc. but it's difficult for me to share that. I'd rather people get prints but I understand too well the $$ issue there. That was what led me do something small specifically for mobile wallpaper - a win-win if you like this, you can get something and support what I do.

Mockup of an iPhone sitting on a light colored wooden countertop. The phone is displaying art that depicts a fluffy white cat on a starry night sky background.

    The constant-threats-to-defederate thing is going to kill this place, seriously.

    Defederating an instance is an extreme measure and it should only be taken in extreme circumstances.

    Finding out I might stop getting posts from people I explicitly follow because they happen to be on an instance being defederated by mine all because a bunch of admins I don't know got in a spat over a user I don't follow is just about the most annoying value proposition imaginable.

    It can be argued that electric vehicles are an improvement when replacing ICE vehicles.

    But that misses a much bigger point — which is that the very best car is not an electric car. The very best car is no car at all!

    Building electric cars requires massive use of fossil fuels, including petrochemicals for the manufacture of plastics. In addition, mining of lithium for batteries as well as trawling for other minerals in the deep ocean is environmentally disastrous, killing biodiversity while polluting our water, soil, and air.

    LITHIUM EXTRACTION — https://www.euronews.com/green/2022/02/01/south-america-s-lithium-fields-reveal-the-dark-side-of-our-electric-future

    DEEP-SEA MINING — https://climatejustice.social/@breadandcircuses/109814016209990908

    The kind of “Green Growth” championed by capitalists and politicians, which features more electric cars, a bit of solar, and a few wind farms — along with continued use of fossil fuels — is not a good answer. It does not solve any of our problems, and in fact only makes them worse.

    Say NO to more cars, of any kind. Push instead for active transportation and for improved public transit.

    Continued economic growth is unsustainable. Period. The only logical choice for us and for the biosphere is de-growth.

    breadandcircuses,

    I like this quote:

    “The problem is that electric cars are popular with politicians precisely because they provide an excuse to avoid doing harder things, like rebuilding our cities, or changing the habits of lifetimes. Persuading people to switch from their old gasoline car to a shiny Tesla is much easier than persuading them that they can live without a car. Hence governments are pushing electric cars, often with incentives that make no sense.” - Daniel Knowles, author of Carmageddon

    Three years ago there were 65,000 sheets of paper containing hand-written measurements of rainfall taken all across the UK & Ireland before 1960.

    Virtually all of the 5.28 million observations on these sheets were unavailable to climate scientists as they had never been digitised.

    ed_hawkins,
    @ed_hawkins@fediscience.org avatar

    Thanks to the Met Office archives, these sheets were scanned & made openly available, but how could the observations be extracted?

    The answer? Ask for help: https://bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-52040822

    16,000 volunteers stepped forward during the first UK COVID lockdown to transcribe every observation.

    ed_hawkins,
    @ed_hawkins@fediscience.org avatar

    We have now released v2.0 of the resulting quality-controlled dataset, thanks to the continued efforts of a small team of volunteers.

    Now available: 4944258 monthly rainfall amounts from more than 15,000 locations across the UK!

    I'm going to make a thread to share links, videos, articles, etc.

    I'll start off with this short-ish (25 minute) video on Fast Fourier Transforms. It had a reasonably accessible explanation of the algorithm itself, but what I found really interesting was its political history, and how it impacted the nuclear arms race.
