If you think Bluesky is an exclusive social network, you should see atomicpoet.org.

You can’t even get an invite over there!

(I’m kidding. I’m the only one on that server.)

@atomicpoet has anyone asked for an invite? If not, I will, so after this we will all know the answer :)

Usage stats about https://calckey.social:

User Count: 1,285
Monthly Active Users: 1,133

That means 88% of users are active.

That level of participation is not sustainable, but it’s still interesting.

trinsec,

@atomicpoet Just wondering, how many joined the past month?

Jdreben,

Unsustainable?? Is this a challenge to MOAR??

Jk that’s massive activity retention ain’t nobody sustaining that. But I for one will endeavor to keep it up :calcpicodance:

After social media gets decentralized, I hope web search gets decentralized.

Google shouldn’t be dominating web search.

@atomicpoet How could one go about decentralizing web search?

Whoa! Vice is heading for bankruptcy!

That magazine was a big chunk of my teens and 20s—for which I had a love/hate relationship.

Hipsterism is officially dead.

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

It’s wild how every defining media and cultural brand of my generation is dead or dying.

Vice is going bankrupt.

BuzzFeed News is dead.

American Apparel is dead.

Pitchfork is a shell of itself.

I mean, at least the Boomers still have Rolling Stone.

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

Vice and BuzzFeed are dead or dying because their whole value was in being cultural gatekeepers.

But now social media algorithms have killed cultural gatekeepers.

Cultural gatekeeping has moved to a human endeavour to one that’s automated.

If social media protocols were people:

ActivityPub = College kid who’s sick and tired of putting up with your shit

AT protocol = People magazine-reading teen who can’t stop talking about ass

Nostr = Coked-out Amway salesman who really needs you on his inside team

Zot = Sean Connery as a Brutal

Diaspora = Old man who never leaves the house

Email = Respectable CEO who suddenly talks about dick pills

Finger = Squatter who lives in an abandon mansion, and who’s seen some things

Infrapink,

@atomicpoet

Usenet = Ageing anarchist who burned out in the 1970s.

Does anyone remember Yo?

It was a social media app that let you say, “Yo” to your contacts. That’s it.

Everyone who appreciates minimalism in social media apps would have loved Yo.

Every single time I think my social media software isn’t ready to be shown to anyone, I just remember that hasn’t fixed their notifications and doesn’t even offer DMs—and 50,000 people use it, and the Tech Press believe it’s the greatest thing ever invented.

noondlyt,

mubelotix,

“It’s not fair to compare to Mastodon because Mastodon has been around for years and Bluesky has just been released.”

Actually, Bluesky has been in development since 2019.

That means it’s 3 years younger than Mastodon, and 1 year younger than ActivityPub’s validation by the W3C.

There’s also the matter of BlueSky receiving $13 million in funding while Mastodon receives $32,000/month from Patreon.

All things considered, it’s @Gargron who’s the underdog here.

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

The other way to look at is that this is what they’ve built after four years in development and $13 million in funding.

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

Of course, I realize that most people don’t care that this is a non-profit going against a Silicon Valley-funded corporation.

For the same reason most people don’t care about whether their food is organic vs. factory farmed.

But to those who do care, that should give them context about who builds what and how.

Just discovered https://fedi.buzz, a website that tracks hashtags across the Fediverse.

Each hashtag seems to be accompanies by a chart.

What's even more fun is that you can drill down by language!

If you're into hashtags, this is a good way to kill an evening.

@atomicpoet @fediversenews hashtags are really important here BUT I wish more people would not make them their whole posts, for me it takes away from what they are trying to share. Especially, with photography. Just saying.

Even though Heads of State are not allowed on Bluesky, I'm not sure that policy applies to Congressmen yet.

Sorry, I am still getting used to the fact that a reply on Mastodon, replies as default to all accounts mentioned AND is posted publicly.

Slowly I now check every reply to ensure that it only gets to the intended audience.

Funny, this reply already defaults to 'unlisted', which is already better (and I removed Fediversenews from the mentioned accounts)

@atomicpoet @fediversenews I wonder why, if there is an actual reason. You'd think that would be a big win for becoming the leading Twitter alternative.

JPK_elmediat,

@atomicpoet @fediversenews "This applies to recent/prominent heads of state as well." Even Bluesky doesn't want King Charles. 😂

I just asked Jay Graber, CEO of , three questions:

  1. How much will it cost to operate a BGS?

  2. Will AT protocol have applications beyond microblogging?

  3. In your estimation, how much of the network will be PDS-to-PDS communication?

I hope she answers.

gulovsen,

@TheVoyageur @timbray @atomicpoet I’ve been waiting for the crypto hook (because you know it’s coming eventually) and I wonder if they’ll implement some sort of staking requirement to operate a server… 🤔

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

@gulovsen @TheVoyageur @timbray Jack Dorsey says that he doesn't want Bluesky to have anything to do with crypto.

And frankly, I believe him. He uses Nostr for those purposes.

Had a great talk with Jacob Gold, the infrastructure engineer at Bluesky.

If the result is actual decentralization of social media, that's great.

I'm skeptical, but who knows. Maybe I'm wrong -- and it's okay for me to be wrong.

@fediversenews

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

One notable aspect of the conversation with 's Jake Gold is that PDS-to-PDS communication is "no way ruled out".

Which is good.

I have my doubts this will be the mainstream use case for AT protocol. But I hope this means of communication will be used.
