A quote from Luke's Jacobin article: "As the Bandcamp dispute illustrates, even seemingly “progressive” or “mission-driven” workplaces can leave their workers exposed and unprotected when they are privately owned and operated for profit (even if they seek to redistribute some of those profits among certain communities or contributors). They exist within capitalist market relations, and no amount of friendly messaging can disentangle these workplaces from that context. Ultimately, the best guarantee of workers’ dignity and basic protections is the organization of those workers themselves."

We are happy to announce that we voted yes (with a 100% participation rate!) on ratifying our severance agreement with Epic Games!

Over multiple bargaining sessions, we fought to make sure that our laid-off unit members would have as much security as possible, especially during the end of the year. We are proud to say that we negotiated a floor for salary that will protect our underpaid comrades in support, editorial, vinyl, and other operations roles. We also negotiated a lump sum bonus for those who are at the bottom of the salary range.

We raised the amount of Epic Games paid health insurance through COBRA, which is paramount for our comrades who need continual healthcare.

We also get to keep our computers, which has been very helpful for comrades who didn’t already have a personal device.

Having a union in this moment allowed us to bring Epic Games to the table and negotiate over the terms of severance. We successfully challenged the status quo and demanded a more just and fair agreement for our laid-off comrades. We are hopeful that it will allow those workers more security in these frustrating times.

We wanted to share additional layoff demographic information. These numbers include the whole staff at Bandcamp (including non-union eligible workers), but it is important context as we return to effects bargaining with Epic Games on 11/9.

A slide that reads: "Bandcamp's trans, non-binary, and gender non-conforming workers were also disproportionately impacted by the lay offs. Only 3 of Bandcamp's 18 openly trans/NB/GNC employees received job offers after the sale to Songtradr. As a result, the number of these employees at Bandcamp was reduced by 84% overnight. As we continue severance negotiations with Epic Games, we think it's important for this disparity to be publicized and taken into consideration.

We wanted to share some demographics around these layoffs so our supporters are able to follow along. These numbers include the whole staff at Bandcamp (including non-union eligible workers), but are important to keep in mind as we continue to negotiate severance with Epic Games.

When 59 of Bandcamp’s 119 employees were laid off, Black employees were disproportionately impacted. Only 4 of Bandcamp's 19 Black employees received job offers after the sale to Songtradr. As a result, the number of Black employees at Bandcamp was reduced by 79% overnight. As we continue severance negotiations with Epic Games, we think it's important for this disparity to be publicized and taken into consideration.

Today, Epic Games’ sale of Bandcamp to Songtradr closed and at least half of Bandcamp’s staff was laid off. This is heartbreaking. We love our jobs, the platform we’ve built, and the Bandcamp community. We’re glad we have our union — coworkers who have each other’s backs. We’ll be moving together to decide our next steps. On Wednesday we return to the bargaining table with Epic Games, and we’ll keep you updated. Love and solidarity to the whole Bandcamp community. Thank you for your support.

BARGAINING UPDATE

Bandcamp United is back at the table today w/ Epic Games management re: layoff effects bargaining. Epic proposed 6 months severance - same as the previous offer and offered to Epic employees. We demand more for this upheaval & believe Epic employees deserve better too.

We are happy to announce that we’ve won our union, 31 to 7! We’re excited to work with leadership to build a better Bandcamp!

While we have won this election by 24 votes — leadership contested 16 ballots. These ballots were not counted.
