Reading the list of changes that TikTok is making to comply with the EU’s digital services act (DSA), I did find it interesting these are mostly things that Meta’s services already do.

It goes to show how much Facebook Derangement Syndrome exists in the press that TikTok is the #1 social app for young people in the US and was missing so many privacy & safety capabilities with little, if any, media coverage.

@bretcarmichael@mastodon.social avatar

@carnage4life There’s an element of entitlement. If someone doesn’t like Facebook — that is collects data and uses it for content recommendations and to target ads — they don’t have to use Facebook. It’s not compulsory like a credit bureau. It has a right to a business model.

The brand — owing to the word for which credit goes to @Iconfactory — conveyed a happy optimism. The #X brand is a better fit current Twitter, skewing negative for being darker and more virulent. X is not a brand. It’s a warning. 😵

There’s no “right thing” for Yaccarino to say, but this is funny. To achieve its ambiguous goals, will rebrand to the letter #X and adopt the same primary brand color as . Yaccarino can’t even explain the rebrand — brands love to (have to) tell their rebranding stories — because, like everyone, she doesn’t know why beyond ’s impulse. Luckily, #X already has the perfect emoji to represent itself…😵

bretcarmichael,
@bretcarmichael@mastodon.social avatar

@juandesant 🤣 Someone had shared that logo with him on Twitter saying they had used it for a former podcast…And, that’s why you don’t use any random logo that a stranger gives you to rebrand a multi-billion dollar company on a whim.

bretcarmichael, to random
@bretcarmichael@mastodon.social avatar

Rebranding requires updating all internal and public-facing assets. It requires public outreach and explanation. It’s expensive, and it should solve a business problem. Twitter’s bird logo is iconic, and all messages on the service are called “tweets “. Musk is completely aimless.
https://www.reuters.com/technology/elon-musk-says-twitter-change-logo-adieu-all-birds-2023-07-23/

bretcarmichael,
@bretcarmichael@mastodon.social avatar

@gedeonm Exactly. I’m imagining all the news outlets that show tweets, where people understand a quoted is a tweet by its proximity to the bird. The “X” will require communication to more people who don’t use Twitter than who do, meaning ad spend, which Musk neither likes nor has budget. TV and print outlets may just switch to “@“ with a username and URL. People already understand the “@“ symbol. It’s instructive, and given platform fragmentation, it makes sense. Destructive for Twitter brand.

https://www.semafor.com/article/07/06/2023/twitter-is-threatening-to-sue-meta-over-threads

bretcarmichael,
@bretcarmichael@mastodon.social avatar

@paul Oh, that’s rich. “We fired you, stiffed you on your severance, and we don’t think you should be allowed to work at any company that might compete with us in the future.” If that’s Twitter’s best response to Threads, they’re done.

isaiah, to random

when i dropped twitter last year i noticed quickly how much happier i was.

i pruned and filtered to remove aggravating posts from MY timeline, but most of twitter was drinking from the algorithmic firehose. and when everyone on the social graph is just one hop from aggravating content all day every day it’s really affecting.

my worry about Threads is that we will be connected to many new users neck deep in algorithmic content, bleeding their agrivation into our otherwise algorithm free graph.

bretcarmichael,
@bretcarmichael@mastodon.social avatar

@isaiah I understand the concern.
That’s fortunately configurable; that it Meta’s a bad actor, or its users are made such by the content they’re fed, instances can/will block Threads.net outright. I’m optimistic. On Twitter, I was a Tweebot user. While is experimented with the first-party client, the experience was way better than Twitter’s “conditioning” of my feed, an experience that has continued with Ivory (and probably other apps here).

gedeonm, to random
@gedeonm@mastodon.social avatar

There’s that word again. Fun. It’s more “fun” than Mastodon. Says who? Not me that’s for damn well sure. I’m having a ball here and so’s everyone I follow for the most part. I humbly suggest if Mastodon doesn’t feel “fun” to you, you are doing it wrong.

bretcarmichael,
@bretcarmichael@mastodon.social avatar

@gedeonm Novelty of newness. I’m glad that Threads exists. It’ll attract a lot more users, and it may be useful to have a work account there. For all my conversing, sharing, and learning — the stuff I enjoy — I’m good here. It’s more curated and generally pleasant.

bretcarmichael, to mastodon
@bretcarmichael@mastodon.social avatar

For users who are concerned about :

  1. Good news. If you were worried about eating and the ’s lunch, that’s over now. Meta backed ActivityPub. BlueSky’s not beating Mastodon, and it won’t replace Twitter.
  2. Threads onboarding is super-easy. When it federates, it’ll add millions of users. But, you don’t have to go anywhere. You’re already here. Meta can’t make you switch to Threads.

maxkennerly, to random
@maxkennerly@mstdn.social avatar

If Threads isn't available in the EU then it's not a viable Twitter replacement. That is both (1) ample evidence of inadequate privacy/content guardrails and (2) fatal to non-US sports coverage, which is a significant draw for Twitter.

via @business

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-07-05/meta-won-t-offer-threads-app-in-the-eu-on-regulatory-concerns

bretcarmichael,
@bretcarmichael@mastodon.social avatar

@maxkennerly @business Yes, and it’s going to be hard to Meta to launch product in the EU. Post-GDPR, which harmed small EU businesses, its regulatory efforts are increasingly focused exclusively on bug tech. The concern isn’t privacy. It’s size.

bretcarmichael, to random
@bretcarmichael@mastodon.social avatar

Lots of people are sharing data collection disclosure observing that Meta collects a lot of data. If you have an Instagram account — Meta’s primary means of onboarding users to Threads — then Facebook already has that data. 🤷‍♂️

Fits. AI is a threat to search, and Bard will compel Google to cannibalize some of its ad business. That said, AI is sort of terrible for search. It provides one answer that could be wrong, and the user doesn't know where the answer came from. AI is good for how-to. You can verify when something works or doesn’t. It's terrible for knowledge.

He was an amazing man who graciously let me into his family & always had a wise word of wisdom whenever I had a problem. He pretty much taught me how to cook. I will always cherish that as well as the many, many card games we played when we would vacation together. ♠️♦️

Rupert Murdoch’s scheme to shake down big tech platforms has spread from Australia to Canada. It’s time for platforms to draw a line in the sand https://www.platformer.news/p/meta-plans-a-news-blackout-in-canada

bretcarmichael,
@bretcarmichael@mastodon.social avatar

@caseynewton I understand why Google cut a deal with Australia. News is important to Google’s utility. It has no network component, and users would use Bing for news. The only alternative they should offer is the ability to opt out with Robots.txt tag. It’d be a trap, because none would do it, and Facebook would have a story to tell. Publishers know where the value flows.

Wild that any main-Skywalker story line Star Wars movie post-episodes 7-9 are automatically sent to my 'maybe I'll stream sometime' list. After watching the most recent trilogy, I am just not invested in any single person or story arc or anything. The right answer for episodes 7-9 was adaptions of Timothy Zahn's Heir to The Empire trilogy, but noooooooo we get a bunch of overly-serious, charmless goofballs and a jaded, homeless Luke

@wiredfire @lackattack I enjoyed Obi Wan. I had the same problem with that though. Before watching, I knew Obi Wan, Leah, The Grand Inquisitor, and Vader would all live. And, the story didn’t change or answer anything. Anakin becomming Vader in Ep. III was monumental. It answered how it happened and how the Jedi got wiped out.
