Sharkey has reached 4000 total users 🥳

bumble,

@Sharkey Amazing. Delighted we are part of that figure.

wiase, to random

Hey, @bumble, do you happen to know if lists will work properly soon in ? I have the same problem with lists as over at Firefish: They only ever show the last added account's posts. Tried to remake the list already - but the problem persists. :blobbee_sob:

bumble,

@wiase Hmm, let me check that one out. I've not noticed that issue.

If you're in the market for a new server to join, please come along and try our server, iBe.social.

If you loved and need a new, stable home you will love us more.

bumble, to random

A fact for the techies/server admins out there.

My Firefish server ran at an almost consistent 80+%. 16 cores running a bit of a sweat.

Since moving to Sharkey it is purring like a kitten, almost a flat line at 4%. 16 cores chillin' 😎

bumble,

@daniel for sure. I run a far bigger mastodon on a far less powerful machine

Make sure the ops team feels needed - don’t forget to push your code to production on your way out the door for the weekend.

bumble,

@jerry there's a little bit of evil in you. Love it.

I am delighted to announce that here at iBe Social we have migrated to :sharkey:

Sharkey is a fabulous variation of Misskey, with some great little extras. I hope everyone will enjoy using it as much as we have during our testing phase. We had setup a test server to let our users play around with it to decide if it was what they wanted.

served us well, but it was time to move on to new and exciting things in Sharkey.

Massive kudos to @Amelia who did all the work on the migration. She took an unbelievably impressive 26 minutes to do the migration; I hardly had time to check my honey stocks!

Proud to be part of Sharkey, and open for visitors.

bumble,

@deathkitten @Amelia I figured a new bit of bling for the hive now we're in fresh pasture

Hi @bumble

Question re: migration to Sharkey. So, it turns out that Firefish doesn't appear to work with Guppe groups, but Sharkey does (my follow request is still pending here, went immediately on our sharkey test instance). I'm in the process of trying to set up a group for some friends across multiple instances from my Trek RP mastodon account, and one of them is part of our hive here.

Not in any way rushing you to get the migration done, just looking for some information to I can make informed choices on stopgap while waiting for the migration to happen so we're not leaving the person on this instance out of things... do you know when the next attempt to migrate is going to be? Totally okay if you don't.

Thanks again for all you do! :blobbee_heart:

bumble,

Morning @deathkitten
Hoping to try again tomorrow (Tuesday).
Re the Guppe groups; it's a huge issue for most servers other than mastodon. I didn't actually think Sharkey could follow them either; certainly not in my testing. I've seen a bit of discussion around the groups and various server types trying to find a resolution to a poorly implemented API by the Guppe people.

bumble,

@deathkitten chirp is appalling. There's a new service coming soon which is to be more compatible. Name not decided yet.

catodon, to random
@catodon@catodon.social avatar

A handy little new feature in , implemented by @linca - thank you!

You know how Mastodon and Misskey show only the number of direct replies under each post? This doesn't provide enough information, as a post might have just one direct reply, but it might be a thread with twenty more comments nested - yet you only see "1" reply.

In Catodon, you still see the number of direct replies in your timeline, but when you click on a post and see the detailed view, next to the number of direct replies you can also see the number of sub-replies under them! So in this case we have 55 direct replies, nesting 118 sub-replies. This way you can easily see how deep the discussion under a post goes at any time, without having to go through every thread! Does this sound useful to you?

bumble,

@catodon @linca Very interesting.

Does this only work (show accurate counts) if you're viewing the post on the original instance of the post?

Also, I assume this is Catodon only instances/posts?

@youronlyone @retrobeetism

for us has been a problem for a long time. Users on our Firefish server just can't follow them. too has issues. Especially inbound. The responses are malformed. Right now I have 11 in our Inbound queue which will eventually fail and disappear, so the subscribe user will never see the message.

From what others more knowledgeable that me have said, the implementation of ActivityPub for these services is poorly constructed and have been cobbled together for Mastodon servers

Migrating instances since Firefish seems to be an abandoned project. Loving how easy it is to move around on the fediverse though! Huge thank you to everyone on ibe.social for being the best neighbours over that last year-ish ♥️

bumble,

@hryggrbyr have fun on your new instance. We are migrating away from Firefish as a platform for the serve shortly.

panos, to fediverse
@panos@catodon.social avatar

Ugh, I really tried to stay out of drama but I guess I have to say a few things. Most of you know me as a core team member, so I think I owe it to the admins of almost 500 firefish servers out there and to the almost 5000 members of firefish.social.

So, yeah, if you haven't noticed, things aren't looking good for firefish. Its owner, Kainoa, has practically abandoned the project, which had its last stable release out on July. My last message to them was a week ago, and I haven't heard back since. Firefish.social, besides the other severe technical problems it's had due to mismanagement in the last few months, now also has serious federation issues. I hope Kainoa is well irl, but this is irresponsible and unacceptable.

I hear some of you saying "but you're in the core team too, don't try to put the blame elsewhere!". So I have to explain what being a core team member in firefish meant. Kainoa invited me, Namekuji and a few others to be part of the "core team", but kept all decisions and responsibilities. We didn't co-own this. We never shared donations. We were just volunteers, who were honestly trying to make it a great project. This didn't work well due to concentration of power to one person, who didn't keep their promises. I don't mean to be harsh to Kainoa, I mean we knew they were only 19 when they started the project. Still, it's a bummer to anyone who chose to trust and support Firefish. This includes myself.

I don't know if it's early to consider firefish a dead project, but it sure seems like that for a few months now. Maybe it can be resurrected, idk. It's all up to Kainoa.

In the meantime, Namekuji and I are starting , which will have some differences with Firefish, and will include many changes I had discussed with Kainoa but were never implemented. If you decide to stick with us, we promise to be serious about this. I strongly believe in the fediverse and its potential, and I want to build a great platform for it. This was my goal when I chose to be involved in Calckey/Firefish. It's still my goal with Catodon, only this time I can stand behind it 100%, as the project will be co-managed by Namekuji and me. If Firefish left you with a bitter aftertaste, we hope we can build a better relationship and prove ourselves worthy of your trust. Catodon will go public in a matter of days, possibly even hours. We'll have more to say about its direction then.

In the meantime, I just wanted to share my apologies for any inconvenience regarding Firefish, as I'm still technically a core team member, whatever that means. But frankly, I tried so hard to make things go differently - but there's only so much you can do when it's someone else's project. I'm really sorry for how things went.

But this is not the end of the fedi journey for me. I'm super excited about the chance to do some things right this time with Catodon. Life goes on, I guess! Hope to see you soon on our repo, so we can start a new creative adventure together =)

:catodon: xx

bumble,

@panos I appreciate your honesty. I have felt that Firefish is on the way out for several weeks now. The mothership instance is so unstable and they have been working hard, allegedly, to resolve it. In the meantime this creates a huge image problem for the product. I find that people judge Firefish based on that one server's performance. We've struggled to attract users here on our own FF instance as people tell me 'FF is crap'. It's a great product -- as are all the Misskey derivatives, but they need development and support. It seems to have evaporated in FF.

As a result, we took the decision to look at alternatives. We asked our users to look at IceShrimp and Sharkey -- we even built test instances for people to play on. We have now decided to move to Sharkey -- I just need to schedule some time to do it now. Time has been tight the last few weeks with the festive season.

We will be keeping an eye on Catodon. @thefediwiki has added an entry to the Wiki ready to build some good user guides for it.

I hope Kainoa is well, and I assume otherwise busy on other projects. They seem very talented. It's a lot for one person to manage, and through time hopefully it is learning curve on delegation.

:bumble:

bumble, (edited )

@panos I too tried to speak about the Mothership server. I was told that it is quite clearly an Alpha server. I said I disagreed as it is only labelled as this on the list of servers, in small text. Most people naturally falls to the first server on the list to join.

feline17ff, to Pixelfed

Hi! I'm new to the Fediverse!

I created a account a few days ago @feline17ff

I want to create a account as well to share stuff like I see outside, s, funny pages. I don't know if I'm into plants, I'm just curious what the plant I see outside is but I don't have anyone to ask

I want to be a writer so I'm going to try to follow communities on KBin, Lemmy, Mastodon and FireFish if I can find any. And I created my Bookwyrm account coz I have a lot of books and sometimes I have comments

My interests include , and

In writing, my favorite genres are (but not romance lol, unless it's funny. I'm in it for the and !) and that isn't dark, depressing, or sexist

I'm currently watching and

I not too social so don't expect me to be on daily lol which is a good thing technically

My is basically my only active social media - feline17ff.tumblr.com. I'm trying to create a feline17ff@neocities.com and might create but idk

Community wise I'm just looking to have a good time and see where the Fediverse leads me since I do enjoy my tumblr community

I do have a project thing I need to do on culture so that could be the start of a community friendship lol

bumble,

@feline17ff Hi. I forgot to welcome you to

Enjoy your journey on the fediverse
