    We interrupt your regular scrolling for this important video of Charidotella sexpunctata the ruby gold tortoise beetle.

    Look at how this little creature places it's little feets* with such care. I wonder if, like ants, they have little sticky pads that must be activated and deactivated for traction?

    The video is by Andreas Kay who does excellent macrophotography.

    *I know "feet" is plural for foot, but if the foot is very cute the proper term is "feets" or "footies"

    Breakfast logic.
    Pop Tarts are basically squished slices of pie.
    Pop Tarts are considered a breakfast food.
    Therefore, slices of pie can be considered a breakfast food.

    Right? I mean, who's with me on this? 🥧

    @AskPippa Not only that, but a piece of pie is more nutritious than a PopTart

    Target is closing stores because of theft, violence. A lot of stores face huge problems with theft. It drives up their overhead costs, having to get security, repairs, replace items, and more. It leads to price increases that everyone else has top pay for to make up for their losses, and makes life difficult for the employees.

    " said in May that theft was cutting into its bottom line...that means losses could top $1.2 billion this fiscal year."

    @AskPippa That's what they say. Is it true? No one digs into this to see if it's true, they just accept the rationale offered by the businesses abandoning underserved communities. You do note these are all in underserved communities. Did any reporter explore if these stores were unprofitable for other reasons? No. Did any reporter ask if they were closing marginal box stores because they were making more money using e-commerce? No. Did any reporter ask to see the actual figures rather than taking the business reps word for it? No.

    @AskPippa These sorts of stories are why I am extremely dubious: https://www.cnn.com/2023/01/18/business/retail-shoplifting-shrink-walgreens/index.html and https://africa.businessinsider.com/retail/heres-why-target-and-costco-are-having-wildly-different-experiences-with-americas/lffyd6j?op=1 (note all the hedge words such as "appear" and "seem" ) and https://www.cnn.com/2023/05/12/business/stores-closing-cities-downtown-retail/index.html
    Those are scattered throughout the year and aren't sensational. Executives like to do CYA as if this is a sudden problem. There is a drumbeat about how crime is "increasing" but the numbers just don't bear it out.

    I think there is a reason for this. Crime isn't rising at any spectacular rate, except for homicides (https://www.cnn.com/2021/07/14/us/crime-data-reporting-united-states-homicide-increase/index.html) but conservatives are using a drumbeat of news stories to create a gestalt of fear and demonization.

    @evelynefoerster @hakona @book @Mary625
    Americans seem to like their cookies soft and what I think of as gooey. I agree, chewy is better. However, crisp cookies are well liked too, which I would suppose fall into the "biscuit" category. Etymologically, I wonder how cookies came to be called biscuits, which means cooked twice, as are biscotti (which are called, hideously, biscottis in the plural here in the US)
    But I digress
