@alanferrier my father was a NASA/JPL artist in the 1970’s and he created the image you see above. I love seeing my dad’s work randomly on the internet ❤️

NASA is sending a software update to the Voyager 2 spacecraft today!

The patch contains logic to auto-recover from glitches similar to one in May 2022, when the AACS system on Voyager 1 started sending garbled data. The root cause was not fully diagnosed. The patch will be activated/tested on Oct 28. Voyager 1 will be next.

Data will be sent at 16 bps with a 19 kW transmitter using the 70-m dish at @canberradsn.
Distance: 20 billion km; 18:40 light hours

Pedestrians, it should be our right to be distracted. It should be our right to walk and listen to music / look at the sky / cute dogs / snowflakes and not worry about getting killed. Nothing about that is dangerous except for CARS. Don't let them make you believe you are the problem.

clare,
@clare@sfba.social avatar

@mbonsma the laws of physics win every time. If I’m on the highway and a big rig starts to come into my lane, it doesn’t matter that I have the right of way. It’s all about weight and velocity. Get out of the way or die.

This whole book banning thing, Moms of 'Liberty' the pulling of school libraries, turning school libraries into detention centers.

It's obviously all connected & 'concerns' about trans people and CRT are just excuses to make the policy go down more smoothly with the public. To make the debate a mess, emotionally charged & awkward.

The real goal is obvious: Limit the exposure of young people to libraries. It's a war on libraries.

And I've been too shocked to really process what that means.

@futurebird my sister is a school librarian. It’s an important time to have good people in these positions.

    Feeling a lot of love today for loyal Mastodon pioneer and anchor account George Takei @georgetakei for demonstrating the courage of his convictions. George migrated here last year and never looked back. He continues to share frequent insightful and entertaining posts.

    Thank you George! You make Mastodon a better place!

    This week I went over to Bluesky and asked people why they left Mastodon. Here's some remarkable responses I received:

    "Yes I understand the Mastodon question but why do you also need to know my social security number?"

    "This account is just to post hourly hedgehog pictures. I take this very seriously, and thus only answer hedgehog-related inquiries."

    "Please stop claiming to be an investigative journalist for The New York Times. You clearly do not work for the New York Times."

    Many of you ask me how I can stay in the fight. How I am not beaten down by the dark forces of authoritarianism which are very much with us, as are growing inequality and corruption. I mean this when I say it: because of you. This includes all of you on social media, and in my classroom.

    Exclusive: Texas troopers told to push children into Rio Grande, deny water to migrants, records say

    Officers working for Gov. Greg Abbott’s border security initiative have been ordered to push small children and nursing babies back into the Rio Grande, and have been told not to give water to asylum seekers even in extreme heat, according to an email from a Department of Public Safety trooper who described the actions as “inhumane.”

    How did you all pick your instance? Was there any particular reasoning behind it?

    For me I was looking for two things.

    1. A regional instance in hopes that I could find more local connections and maybe help shape the community if I felt like being more involved.

    I'm not here because I think Mastodon is better than other options. I don't think it is (yet). I like its potential so my decision to make this my main social media home is about tomorrow, not today.

    1. I wanted an instance whose first letters could be typed with my left hand only.

    I do most of my social media when I'm waiting for something I'm working on to load and if I'm able to swap between tasks using just my left hand, I can peek and get back to work quickly.

    clare,
    @clare@sfba.social avatar

    @sysop408 I had no idea what I was doing and picked San Francisco Bay Area because I’m in California and didn’t see anything for Los Angeles. I can see other servers so it seems okay?!

    For one thing, democratic socialist systems are not planned economies. Democratic socialism is usually capitalistic, with a strong safety net supported by good taxation. This safety net helps to maintain social and political stability. And that’s just one of the many, many issues.

    The goal is to destroy public schools. If publishers have to make new textbooks for Florida, it won’t be limited to Florida. See Texas’ anti-educational impact on this.

    https://www.npr.org/2023/05/10/1175232763/desantis-florida-textbooks-social-studies-schools

    clare,
    @clare@sfba.social avatar

    @TonyStark from what I understand, Texas provides most of the text books for all US schools. This is a big part of why our children don’t learn their own history.

    @Em0nM4stodon being doxed would definitely do it for me. Also probably being charged in anyway. I would like to see Mastodon or any other app grow enough to replace it.
