So this really did happen. Looks like they are targeting small towns and places likely to be thin on IT specialists.

@futurebird Luckily there are increased resources available to local communities, specifically the cyber-underserved that can help prevent this. My company (a non-profit), Center for Internet Security is funded in part by the government to provide that tech free of charge. The biggest challenge is getting the word out to sparsely connected communities that the resources are available.

@thomasfuchs I was looking for specific studies on the human toll of not having universal healthcare and the only one I found was specifically COVID related between 2020 and 2022. That number was "at least 300k." So tens of millions is probably low.

daswickerman,

@GottaLaff It was an instrumental version, definitely from Hamilton. I'm pretty sure it was Right Hand Man, which makes sense given the message and location.

Microsoft has a fundamental problem in their approach to EOL products: They appear fully patched.
All EOL products should be issued a final gimped patch that never installs correctly so EOL products always show unpatched.

daswickerman,
@daswickerman@mastodon.social avatar

@SwiftOnSecurity they did something similar with the original XBox, but at the beginning of the life cycle. It wouldn't BSOD because they removed that code (and bragged about it when they were doing campus roadshows in the lead up to the release).

I guess itch.io is probably positioned to take up the Bandcamp slack, but geeeeeze would I rather that didn't happen. Let's stop making single big points of failure.

But short term, it still seems the best option.

daswickerman,
@daswickerman@mastodon.social avatar

@glassbottommeg There's actually a bunch of different platforms out there already. In another discussion we've been collecting ideas.

I don’t know how to feel about the situation. It certainly doesn’t decrease my disdain for Epic Games, and I’m disgusted by Songtradr’s stance of “supporting the band camp community is our top priority but let’s fire half the staff.”

But what’s the alternative? Isn’t it the only well-known music platform that doesn’t screw over musicians? Are there other places where I can launch a vinyl release for no upfront cost? Control my pricing?

Musicians need to take back this industry. how?

daswickerman,
@daswickerman@mastodon.social avatar

@killyourfm I honestly think there's a solid argument to build something on top of activity pub and the fediverse that meets those basic needs.

daswickerman,
@daswickerman@mastodon.social avatar

@killyourfm Yeah, I know enough to guide that kind of project, but I'm not a programmer and have a day job so my time would be limited. I imagine we could rally people to the cause. I heard there's a wealth of former bandcamp staff looking for work.

daswickerman,
@daswickerman@mastodon.social avatar

@killyourfm Definitely. I'm talking to a few people about it and if we can come up with something viable, I'll make sure you know. Really just following the Mastodon model, with revenue share off sales to cover server costs (and maintaining a large percentage back to the artist) would be ideal. Plus, activitypub integration for easier sharing and cross-platform integration.

daswickerman,
@daswickerman@mastodon.social avatar

@mrcompletely @RyunoKi @narF @meljoann @smallcircles @killyourfm @ahoneybun @funkwhale @freebliss
I think it's probably important to look at it in terms of stakeholder requirements. Recurring revenue is a platform imperative but wouldn't necessarily rank above a feature that would drive adoption, at least to start. The revenue split required to handle that overhead would be higher, and would probably have a breakeven point for artists and the collective that would need to be taken into account.

daswickerman,
@daswickerman@mastodon.social avatar

@smallcircles @mrcompletely @RyunoKi @narF @meljoann @killyourfm @ahoneybun @funkwhale @freebliss

Here's a summary of the links so far:
Resonate - Co-op model with a paygo model (https://resonate.coop/)
Ampled - Pateron for musicians (https://www.ampled.com/)
LibRate - RYM/rating tool (https://codeberg.org/mjh/LibRate)
Faircamp - Frontend site generation geared towards musicians (https://simonrepp.com/faircamp/)

@daswickerman@mastodon.social avatar

@smallcircles @mrcompletely @RyunoKi @narF @meljoann @killyourfm @ahoneybun @funkwhale @freebliss

IMO Resonate actually gets like 90% of the way there. The support model is excellent with automatic purchase once you hit a threshold. It's also a co-op so if it actually does the trick I'd hesitate to put energy into a competitor rather than focus on improvement of that platform.

daswickerman,
@daswickerman@mastodon.social avatar

@mrcompletely @RyunoKi @narF @meljoann @smallcircles @killyourfm @ahoneybun @funkwhale @freebliss
Sure, I think having an open source option works for that, but I also don't think most artists - and especially indie artists have the time or expertise to run a distribution platform in addition to creating music, touring, and holding down a day job or six. The "business model" is to serve those stakeholders rather than the established artist who can afford to run their own system.

daswickerman,
@daswickerman@mastodon.social avatar

@mrcompletely @RyunoKi @narF @meljoann @smallcircles @killyourfm @ahoneybun @funkwhale @freebliss
But that's also why I find resonate appealing at the surface. It's basically doing that already and is fairly open. What it's lacking in federation or discovery features are things that could be added without having to reinvent the wheel, and technically there's nothing stopping you from rolling your own service.
https://github.com/resonatecoop/

daswickerman,
@daswickerman@mastodon.social avatar

@mrcompletely @RyunoKi @narF @meljoann @smallcircles @killyourfm @ahoneybun @funkwhale @freebliss
Physical distribution, yes. That's a relatively low-tech process - package and ship merch. Bandcamp is providing the addresses and payment remit for that process, but the bigger lift is the streaming and discovery that gets people to buy your merch in the first place. A Co-Op model based on a low cost pay-as-you-play-to-own mechanism to support that admin work seems like an elegant solution.

@daswickerman@mastodon.social avatar

@mrcompletely @smallcircles @RyunoKi @narF @meljoann @killyourfm @ahoneybun @funkwhale @freebliss

One note on Resonate. It looks like the project is in slight disarray with multiple board members resigning and some general frustration. It might be something to fork rather than join outright.

daswickerman,
@daswickerman@mastodon.social avatar

@AimeeMaroux @killyourfm Looks interesting, but there's a TON of scope there. It does feel like they're biting off more than necessary to solve this specific problem, but there's definitely potential!

daswickerman,
@daswickerman@mastodon.social avatar

@AimeeMaroux @killyourfm Absolutely! the basic plan for Aural Isle is interesting. I would be concerned about competing priorities across the overall "revolutionize all media" strategy cutting into development of a truly robust bandcamp alternative but at this point I'm more than willing to give them the benefit of the doubt!

Democrats are calling for Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez to resign following his indictment.

Republicans are trying to elect Trump president after his 4 indictments on 91 felony charges.

Remind me who's the "party of law and order" again?

daswickerman,
@daswickerman@mastodon.social avatar

@rbreich I understand the point you're making but I absolutely hate this framing. The politics of Law and Order were never about law or justice but always about oppression and racism. I'm not sure the Democrats really need to be grasping for that vile title. I'm sure we can come up with something better.
