It’s very weird watching people become “Stans” of one social media platform or another. They don’t seem concerned with social media actually solving communications problems for society, or a particular discipline, but rather, with how much they empower their personal social, emotional or brand needs. It all gives me a queasy feeling. There is so little depth to anything anymore. Am I alone in my discomfort?
@shoq Agreed. Also, it's wild to me how people are rushing to "alternative" former bird-site platforms owned by tech billionaires. It's as if no one learned anything from the hellpits social media sites became due to capitalism.
@jargoggles@shoq HELLO! Or, “Let’s join the other new platform owned by the billionaire whose large, legacy SM platform is constantly tangled in scandal and nefarious operating practices! What could go wrong?”
Musk is indeed a dictator of one. And as much as I love Mastodon, the train left the station & it missed it. And without the equity of a mover like the EU or the US govt, it's sadly never going to pull in users to attain critical mass.
@kurtsh Mastodon is what Twitter and other SM platforms should have been. I don’t believe it “missed the train” because it hasn’t (yet) attained explosive growth. Actually, I think it’s a good thing it hasn’t. Rapid growth ≠ a quality good or service. I’ve been on Mastodon for almost a year and have had more quality engagement and conversations than in over 13 years on the former bird site.
Fun fact: Even if Trump thinks he can stop the criminal cases against him by being reelected, when he loses the civil case in NY and his access to property wealth, that's it. No more riches, however inflated.
Not the kind of thing I usually post... but just wanted to share this sunset pic I took last month while out for oatmeal during a thunderstorm😁
Does anyone else enjoy going out in bad weather sometimes?
@WTL Agreed, life is about learning! Getting up early is a way of life for me since childhood. It's this introvert's dream and at 53, I have no intentions of changing this aspect of my life. Thank you for reading the article and sharing your experience! 🙏🏿
Every single ‘software engineer’ I know who has ever over-valued their own work over blue collar work has, without fail, turned out to be MAGAs or incels. They tend to be the people who have their self worth wrapped up in their compensation and status, and are quick to anger when transit workers or delivery drivers, who work long hours in ways that are taxing in every way, break their narrative for themselves
@skinnylatte The very notion of certain jobs/work being “no or low-skilled” is very classist and elitist. Someone once said, “if you have to be taught how to do something then that IS a skill.” Most of those snobs upset about the UPS labor agreement would crumble in 15 minutes if they had to do the taxing manual labor snd service work required to keep our nation operating. EVERYONE deserves a living wage.
