Back in the day, when memory was expensive, the general advice was to have a swap partition on your UN*X box that was about four times the size of your physical memory. Now, if you do a default install of any mainstream distribution, you get a swap partition, but it's of trivial size.

What's the rationale for this? What's the point of even having a swap partition if it doesn't allow you more virtual memory than physical memory?

falken,
@falken@qoto.org avatar

@simon_brooke swapping idle programs to disk gives more RAM for I/O cache for the active one.

So the World Central Kitchen convoy a) cleared its route with the IDF beforehand, b) traveled on an approved route, and c) departed at an approved time, so d) the IDF knew exactly who it was killing when it struck the convoy three (3) times.

It was so obviously deliberate, and so deliberately cruel—not just to murder these people, but to terrorize other aid workers into abandoning the Palestinians to be starved to death. To prove the IDF’s impunity and reach, and to compel the IDF’s defenders into apologizing for yet another unforgivable atrocity.

I love that Debian discovered both the failure of crowdsourcing a web of trust via keysigning parties (someone used ID in their name but issued by a fake country) and the failure of assuming upstream is trustworthy (an upstream buried code that wouldn't trigger on the Debian maintainer's system but would everywhere else) back in the 2000s but the free software ecosystem is still trying to come up with social solutions to a technical problem

I finally managed to piece together the new sprite multiplexing system to display a record number of cars (with overlays!) in a racing game with a 3D perspective. The next step is to add some content streaming logic so we could see several different models at the same time. I'm still not sure how feasible that is, but I'm hopeful.

It's a nice exercise for the readers familiar with C64 programming to try to figure out how this system works. 😉

About a week ago I posted about NewtHack, a Roguelike for Apple Newton that only lets you play level 1 unless you buy a key. I was complaining how so many of these old games/softwares were soft-locked now by asking for codes we can no longer provide.

Someone here sent me a code for an earlier version to try. But now that reply is GONE, apparently deleted. Are you still here, anonymous kind soul? Can you send it to me again?

HT to @wdormann here - somebody has backdoored the open source project XZ which has downstream impacts.

For example, although OpenSSH doesn’t use XZ, Debian patch OpenSSH and introduced a dependency which translates as the XZ changes introducing a sshd authentication bypass backdoor it appears.

One dude bothered to investigate in his free time about why ssh was running slow, so it was caught fairly early - i.e. hopefully before distros started bundling it.
