What is the best solution for getting a consistently up-to-date version of node on an Ubuntu server?

In the past I have been very happy with nvm in the "I am a developer installing a copy of node just for invoking in my user account" but now I'm discovering nvm… only works in that configuration, and considers "multiple users" as permanently outside the scope of what they will intentionally support. This is awkward in a server configuration.

Q: Is 23 less then twenty five ?
A: No, 23 is not less than 25. In fact, it is greater by 2 units (25 - 23 = 2).

I had a weird realization today:
You know how I make terrible keyboards? It turns out I can also made good keyboards!

Well, kinda. I had this silly gamer keyboard I kept around because it was small and I used it when I needed a random USB keyboard, but it was horrible to use. No contrast on the key labels...

but wait I have a bunch of keycaps since I'm a keyboard-making punk. what if I just put some onto it... and now it's readable! and looks snappy!

On May 10, Ncuti Gatwa starts his first full season as the Doctor — the first Black and first openly queer man to take on the role. Entertainment Weekly talked to him about the responsibility he feels to get things right. “I was really cautious about getting it right throughout filming,” the Rwandan-Scottish actor explains. “It’s 60 years’ worth of legacy and 60 years’ worth of a show that people have loved and watched with their families. It lives in people’s hearts, so I really wanted to protect that.”

@brucelawson I think the show is great just for having a different visual look for its future. That sort of retro 60s futurism is fab

The fact that every mainstream news site is now locked behind a paywall is a real boon for the spread of misinformation, because very few right wing sites have paywalls — which means their disinfo and propaganda can spread much more easily. Paywalls are a slow motion disaster.

Anyone have any recs for a gaming rig running Linux? Wanting to also run Unreal Engine 5.0 dev environment for academic purposes. Trying to see if there is enough support for games via Steam on Linux using a relatively good system.

Prefer to build a system from components rather than a prebuilt system, but not a deal breaker if there are good prebuilts available.

The system will be used by someone that is not a power user and new to Linux, but they will have some support for various aspects.

Feel free to boost.

Vending machines installed in a university in Canada have cameras, but various companies assert that they don't identify persons or store photos of them. They only detect that some person is in front of the machine and perhaps wants to use it. In my view, the injustice of most cameras that watch people lies in tracking people. A camera that …

falken,
@falken@qoto.org avatar

@rms but if it were true that vending machines only needed cameras to detect presence, then they'd have used a cheaper sensor like IR or ultrasound

Microsoft says it’s starting to test ads inside the Start menu on Windows 11. The software maker will use the Recommended section of the Start menu, which usually shows file recommendations, to suggest apps from the Microsoft Store. Trillion dollar corporation is so poor. They need more money by selling your data to the highest bidder. wtf? https://www.theverge.com/2024/4/12/24128640/microsoft-windows-11-start-menu-ads-app-recommendations
