@fsf Shame that there are exemptions. It should apply to everything. Farmers in particular are going to be very angry. Surprised he didn't veto it, though, considering he's been doing that to good bills a lot lately.

As long as the code behind "smart" home devices is proprietary, these companies are free to spy on us as much as they like. Help us fight back: tell your friends about free software and urge then to join the FSF! Support #FreeSoftware. https://fsf.org

Wuzzy,

@thefwguy So do you have any arguments to defend the behind many "smart" devices like Amazon Echo or Ring? The spy metaphor is spot on, actually. There have been numerous reports in the press of corporations actively collaborating with law enforcement to use it against their owners. It is not terrorism to criticize this system. The fact that some private citizens are welcoming this system with open arms is concerning.

I do agree that providing sources does help tho.

thefwguy,

@Wuzzy No, I have argument to defend against the constant end-of-the-world tone constantly used.
Maybe, just maybe, we should change the way to fight the corporation power without terrorizing people. Not everybody can understand the real risk or how to defend.
In the end phenomenon like Qanon and similar exists because this constant mantra.
Simply SICK of it. Am I more clear ?

"Many young students have a talent for programming; they are fascinated with computers and eager to learn how their systems work. With proprietary software, this information is a secret so teachers have no way of making it available to their students. But if it's free software, the teacher can explain the basic subject and then hand out the source code for the student to read and learn." https://www.gnu.org/education/edu-why.html
