Lately, I've been thinking about what it means to have come from the equator. Imagine growing up with no seasons, except 'rain' and 'monsoon' and 'hot' and 'hotter'. Everything around you is green, all year round, never brown. Lush is not just the word they use in magazines about tropical travel, but it's the only world you know.

Starting a thread about my life with Cookie, while she’s in intensive care right now in San Francisco. She’s still conscious, but it’s not looking great. Even if she gets to come home I think it’s time to prepare to say goodbye to her.

  1. This was the very first time I saw her.

I was 24 years old. I’d just moved to Petaling Jaya, Malaysia. With the first serious girlfriend I had. We thought it’d be a great idea to get a dog.

I took a pic of the moment I saw Cookie in Damansara Uptown

@joelanman On our work slack, that emoji is labeled something like “Looking into this”, so I think it’s intended to mean something like “this looks interesting/useful, I’m going to add it to my pile of things to look at”.

Is there a term (English or not) for when people make something work for them in a way that is busted as hell but charmingly effective and doesnt need to be improved? Im thinking of dragging windows around in a screen recording frame as a way of editing videos rn, but also stuff like idk using a keychain ring on a pants zipper to loop around a button and keep it up, etc. The emphasis is more on the unexpectedness or laterality of approaches than them being "bad."

"Hack" or "kludge" implies too much jankiness and is usually negative, "macgyvering" or "Jerry rigging" is too specific to using only what is on hand to do something, there is a Brazilian word "gambiarra" that I think is quite close but I don't have the cultural context to tell.

Edit: I think gambiarra is what im looking for here, thanks @catzilla !

gaurav,
@gaurav@hachyderm.io avatar

@jonny There’s an Indian subcontinental term called “jugaad”. I’m not familiar enough with it to tell if it’s exactly what you’re looking for, but I think it’s in the ballpark. But it might have more of a sense of a long term hack, a “this is not ideal but it’s clever and will work for years” kind of thing. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jugaad

So.

None of you thought it might be important to tell me that ferns have sperm that swim??? I just had to find all this out on my own?

And, (apparently, & no one thought to bring this up either🙄) fern plants are only one form... they have this 'other form' (tiny, ephemeral, difficult to find in the wild) alternates generations-- Fern spores don't grow into ferns! (WHAT) they grow into 'gemetophytes' (WHAT) THEN you get a fern.

Feel like I've uncovered a massive scandal.

gaurav,
@gaurav@hachyderm.io avatar

@futurebird Yup! It’s called alternation of generations and was one of the most fun biology things we learned in high school in India: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alternation_of_generations — I don’t think it’s correct to say that fern gametophytes are difficult to find in the wild, as my plant-obsessed wife finds them all the time! Is there a good free-or-cheap solution for an email inbox that’s monitored/accessed by multiple people?

We have a choir email address and a gmail account that’s fetching messages from it via POP (that’s all gmail offer) which multiple people log into with a shared login. We use gmail because it’s a familiar interface for non-technical folks - webmail less so. It’s not ideal.

We’ve tried delegating access via gmail but that’s a mixed bag and often people don’t understand how it works.

@sophie If you’re okay with staying in the Google ecosystem, a Google Group can be set up as a “Collaborative Inbox” where members of the group with the right permissions can reply to emails on behalf of the entire group: https://support.google.com/a/users/answer/167430?hl=en

I had the most lovely dream. All of the emoji for every kind of ant were implemented, and for some reason this was a future were lots of people had free time to just observe nature. Everyone had fanned out to try to document each and every little creature.

There was this feed the emoji of ants people had seen-- and suddenly the emoji for the female forms of Aenictogiton showed up! And this makes no sense since how could there be an emoji of an ant no one has ever seen?! 1/

gaurav,
@gaurav@hachyderm.io avatar

@mcc @futurebird Oh, yes, plenty. There are an estimated 22,000 species of ants according to Wikipedia, so we could tuck them all into a single unused Unicode plane. 1-2 planes would give you every male, female and queen forms of all these species too. Fitting in all 150k described hymenopterans (ants, bees and wasps) will be trickier, and all 400k described beetles is probably where the system falls apart somewhat.

@textfiles It's called a https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Deletion_by_redirection -- not good, but not actually frowned upon since the previous content is still available in the history, ready to be restored. Do you know of any news articles that reference TinyTIM since 1999? If we can point some of them out on the Talk page, I think we should be able to get consensus on reverting the redirect pretty quickly.

Even if Rudy is forced to pay just a fraction of the judgment, it will be financially ruinous for the former mayor.
