My niece is an #artist who has been on #disability for ages, her neck problems have reached the point where #drawing is very hard for her, and doing #art is what keeps her soul alive. She just had neck surgery and will be able to draw again within a few weeks, gradually over time. She cannot afford her favorite #pastels, but she knows how to make good pigments to draw with out of any size of used pastels, particularly the high-end #Schminke or #Selennier, which she can't afford. If you know anyone who has leftovers of those brands or where I can acquire leftovers, will you let me know? I can send them to her.

The #LomaPrieta earthquake was stronger and shallower than the Morocco earthquake and the #Morocco quake is seeing hundreds of times more death.

A fair bit of our local sales tax in the #SFBayArea goes to #infrastructure #retrofitting for #quake #safety and I don't want to hear a single peep of complaint about that. It really matters.

I don't blame Morocco one bit, they aren't especially wealthy and earthquakes like this are rare there. But I think the illustration is relevant.

Just in the last few hours they have upgraded #LosAngeles county's #tropicalStorm watch to a tropical storm warning. It's going to get really wet, folks. I would suggest quickly reading the first chapter of John McPhee's Control of Nature, and then finding a place that is dry and isn't on an alluvial fan or in a wash. I hope the cities that have people living in storm drains and along dry/gentle watercourses during the summer are making sure they are cleared out and the residents given good shelter.
