I propose a day, once a quarter, where the team maintaining an open source project sits down with a new user and silently watches them try to compile it, using only the instructions on the website.

I quit my job last week, and for the first time ever, I don’t have anything else lined up.

So: Do you know someone who needs a senior-level jack-of-all-trades coder and sysadmin? Who can also write well? And has thirty years of experience delivering robust, high-quality products quickly? In Los Angeles or remote? Send ‘em to greg@eod.com!

Please don’t make me have to use LinkedIn. Please.

Since I’m new to JavaScript, I wrote:

𝚒𝚏 (𝚌𝚊𝚕𝚕𝚋𝚊𝚌𝚔) { 𝚌𝚊𝚕𝚕𝚋𝚊𝚌𝚔(); }

…like an idiot. Then, I realized I should be adapting to JavaScript culture and make it inscrutable, so I re-wrote the line to:

𝚌𝚊𝚕𝚕𝚋𝚊𝚌𝚔 && 𝚌𝚊𝚕𝚕𝚋𝚊𝚌𝚔();

But I suspected there was something even more nightmarish, and sure enough, of course. This is how real JavaScript developers do it:

𝚌𝚊𝚕𝚕𝚋𝚊𝚌𝚔?.();

And by “real JavaScript developers,” I mean “monsters”.

If tech oligarchs really want to extend human lifetimes, the proven way to do it is simple: eliminate poverty, improve education, expand healthcare.

Oh! They want to extend thier lives!

Got it.

Turns out — eventually — that’s going to be the way for them to live longer, too.

Remember a month or so ago when I split my scalp open and got an ambulance ride to the ER and a CT scan and an EKG and some staples whacked into my head? The bill came.

It was $200.

Well, that was my deductible. The actual bill was $4,598.37.

Well, that’s what the insurance company paid by contract. The actual bill was $25,546.25.

It’s like I got a twenty-five grand bonus just because I have a job.

The American medical system is insane.

Still waiting on the ambulance invoice.

Part of my day job is maintaining and expanding a Win32 / MFC / C++ / C app I originally wrote over 25 years ago. It works well, a couple thousand people use it every day and say nice things, and it’s backwards compatible to XP, which some of our clients still have.

This week, I started exploring a re-write, using modern Windows languages and frameworks, with the idea than surely — surely — things have become significantly less complex in the last couple of decades.

Oh.

Oh, no.

Oh, God, no.

Twenty years ago last Friday, @gruber and Aaron Swartz released the first beta of Markdown, the now-ubiquitous markup format.

I noticed because I was referencing the original implantation for a quick one-off hack, two decades on. There are now tons of implementations across a bunch of languages, and you can use it in dozens — maybe hundreds? — of products.

Markdown is amazing.

You can do a lot with a good idea and some Perl.

Some jackhole has been applying for credit cards in my name, so I pulled a credit report and the amount of utter bullshit in it is astonishing. Names, phone numbers, addresses — all wrong. Like, incomprehensibly wrong.

I’m really looking forward to spending a few hours doing the credit reporting company’s job for them, in case I ever need to, y’know, use the financial system.

Good job, capitalism! Is there any other uncompensated labor I can perform for the sake of your profit? Eager to help!

Why is it news when some aggrieved billionaire decides to stop pouring money into Harvard? Harvard is a billionaire! Its endowment is $50B!

If it intends to be a university instead of a reputation-laundering service for rich assholes, it should tell them to jump in a lake and actually teach what it wants.

Hell, it should be donating to schools in Florida and Texas, and applying a little curriculum agenda-setting itself.

I said this before on the bird site but it really is true; I distinctly remember reading Ayn Rand as a teenager and thinking “this is some bullshit she is trying to pull here”. As pulp it is fine, but this is not a serious philosophy for serious people.

The saddest, most terrifying part of all this is that we are in a literal, nation-threatening Constitutional crisis over… Donald Trump.

Stuffed Crust Donald Trump. Reality Show Donald Trump. Excessive Bronzer Donald Trump. John Barron Donald Trump. Greenland Donald Trump. Sharpie Donald Trump. Incoherent, Loud-Mouthed, Tacky, Lying, Narcissistic, Vulgar, Cheating, Lawless, Ignorant, Racist, Sexist, Cruel, Stupid Donald Trump.

American history is low-brow parody.
