Thanks to the wonderful bacterial talents of my friend @compostablespork I now have my own ferment going, which I named Kefir Sutherland. Of course.

While we were hanging out we hit a local natural foods store where I was surprised to find a Jun SCOBY for Jun so I brought that home, too (named that one Juniper).

If you're interested, I posted about these new adventures on my blog:

Miles is moving on Thursday to live with his boyfriend, and it’s SO GOOD and also WHOAH EMPTY NEST. <3 Awww man. My baby!

It’s an odd (but good!) mix to be so happy for him but so sad, too. It’s an ache so strong that it stops me sometimes, makes me want to get my tea and curl up under a blanket for a while with a book, but thankfully not an ache that injures my heart? If that makes any kind of sense? It helps that he keeps giving me hugs. <3

@hollie@social.coop avatar

@MsHearthWitch Thank you, hugs! Yeah that's it - excitement, and proud of them, but also that ache. It's such a mix. Wow I can't imagine how much this gets compounded if they're overseas! That's really tough!

@MsHearthWitch I'd want a daily text too if Miles were that far away! :)

Folks with ADHD, how did you feel when the acronyms shifted, and instead of having and , now the "correct" term is ADHD?

When I was diagnosed in 2000, it was largely because they'd finally discovered that ADD without hyperactivity was a thing, and that girls/women presented as inattentive more often than hyperactive (thus why they were often overlooked). It still feels inaccurate every time I write "ADHD" in reference to myself (yet I often get corrected if I use "ADD").

We moved Jupiter’s leopard gecko, Sebastian, to the living room this weekend so he gets more mental stimulation. He’s the friendliest little guy, he loves mine and Jupes' faces and will walk toward us when he sees us, grinning his little muppet grin (so far he retreats from others, so he does seem to recognize people). I felt bad he’s in Jupes' room all alone. He seems to love the change. Also his mail order mealworms arrived today and I laughed at the “whatever”.

More Jupiter art! They’re majoring in Physics and learning about stars. The dots along the edges of the petals are the different temperatures of stars. The bluer stars are hotter and the redder stars are colder.

One of Zoë’s incredibly endearing habits is that she’ll sit next you and gently (or not so gently) paw at your hand. Once you give it to her - and you will because the cute cannot be denied - she licks it a few times, and then she tucks it under her chin and puts her head down on it.

Your hand. Under her head. For as long as she chooses to lay there (she often just goes to sleep). Here she is stealing my left hand and proceeding to nap upon it.

Same lab from an angle showing more of the front, with her sleep face more visible. She has tucked the hand right under her.

You may tell yourself, this is not my beautiful box!

(Chloe is sitting in her brother’s box - he has not noticed but I’m amused that her expression implies she’s not sure she should be here but is doing it anyway - an extremely Chloe behavior mode and honestly why I love her)

Book club meets tonight! Huzzah!! We're discussing the Monk and Robot books. We were going to just read the first one, but then we all did and loved it so much, we immediately read the second.

Watched an interview with a linguistics professor today, discussing the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis. She said, "Sometimes people say, 'I feel more passionate when I speak Spanish,' or 'I feel more precise and organized when I speak German,' but they often don't take culture into account...".

I speak neither Spanish nor German so I just nodded, taking this in. Tonight scrolling videos I see one for a German TV game show where contestants have to cut something precisely in half. I laughed out loud.

I was just texting Greg, but he wasn’t seeing the message, and so I made a joke about him checking his phone, but (long story) it just confused things - it was a bad joke and it made the initial text super unclear and confusing.

Anyway I said, “No, my fault, bad jokesmanship,” and I want that to be a word now. When a joke fails, it’s bad jokesmanship. I’m calling Oxford. This one might get me in the book. :)

Listening to A Prayer for the Crown-Shy ( versions of both books are wonderful). I just got to the part where Dex and Mosscap are heading to Dex's family's house and Dex is explaining their family, and I'm just melting with happiness at how normalized it all is. No spoilers. Just read it. :)

I use an iMac with this great disco keyboard. It’s perfect, except that the F6 key puts the screen to sleep, which really stinks because despite my legendary grace <coughs> I keep hitting that key while moving my keyboard around during Zoom calls, ejecting me from the call.

So I pulled the key off. But is there any way to re-map the key? I have looked this up several different ways and is it just that search engines suck? I can’t find the answer. Anyone know?

hollie,
@hollie@social.coop avatar

@mnemonica @sarajw @michelv @jackbrewster Greg and Karabiner-Elements fixed it, thank you so much! I downloaded the app but couldn't get it to work. Greg took over and realized my problem was that my wacky keyboard (you'll be shocked to learn I bought it for the disco lights) has F6 mapped to be control-option-power, which just turned everything off. He said this is unusual, not the default, and it took him awhile to figure out how to deconstruct that. F6 now does blissfully nothing. :)

hollie,
@hollie@social.coop avatar

@jackbrewster @mnemonica @sarajw @michelv Yep, apparently I do, but it's set to be running in the background now so hopefully it's all good?

Here's the keyboard Jack, you'd asked which one it is (I've loved it except for this one little snafu):

(Also Sara I was laughing because I was thinking what else might I buy if it had disco lights....the imagination reels)

I just watched a short of a marching band performing on a field. One of the musicians was blind and had a “ghost marcher” (another kid who volunteered for the job) walking behind them, in uniform, blending into the background but using both hands to cue the blind person where to march. This was fancy footwork, not just forward and back, and they were so in sync! Such a neat idea! One commenter was his mom, she said he had three ghost marchers in high school. So cool!

I put on this interview of Becky Chambers (author of the Monk and Robot books), about why we choose “cozy” fiction. I’m moved by the idea of people actively resisting dystopia through stories. But I was surprised at the end, when she says, “…and if you choose to pick up a story like that, you’re choosing to engage with that idea, that the future could be good, and that the people in it will be kind.” My eyes completely filled with tears.

Finished the crochet doll! As always, sewing the little bits on is my least favorite part. I crochet very tightly so getting the needle thru is tough.

But I took my time and I'm generally pretty dang pleased with how it turned out!

https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/friendy-sadie-doll-with-melody-dino

Mostly I used Scheepjes Catona yarn, and some Schachenmayr Catania

Took approximately 1 month to complete.

@crochet (pls leave group off if you reply!)

A crochet doll and a small dinosaur. Both are wearing headphones. The doll has blue jean overalls and a beanie to match their shoes and the dino. The doll has a matching backpack at their feet.
A small light green dinosaur wearing bright coral headphones. They have three darker green dots on their head and three spikes along the back and tail.
