I just watched a short of a marching band performing on a field. One of the musicians was blind and had a “ghost marcher” (another kid who volunteered for the job) walking behind them, in uniform, blending into the background but using both hands to cue the blind person where to march. This was fancy footwork, not just forward and back, and they were so in sync! Such a neat idea! One commenter was his mom, she said he had three ghost marchers in high school. So cool!

I put on this interview of Becky Chambers (author of the Monk and Robot books), about why we choose “cozy” fiction. I’m moved by the idea of people actively resisting dystopia through stories. But I was surprised at the end, when she says, “…and if you choose to pick up a story like that, you’re choosing to engage with that idea, that the future could be good, and that the people in it will be kind.” My eyes completely filled with tears.

MsHearthWitch, to crochet
@MsHearthWitch@wandering.shop avatar

Finished the crochet doll! As always, sewing the little bits on is my least favorite part. I crochet very tightly so getting the needle thru is tough.

But I took my time and I'm generally pretty dang pleased with how it turned out!

https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/friendy-sadie-doll-with-melody-dino

Mostly I used Scheepjes Catona yarn, and some Schachenmayr Catania

Took approximately 1 month to complete.

@crochet (pls leave group off if you reply!)

A crochet doll and a small dinosaur. Both are wearing headphones. The doll has blue jean overalls and a beanie to match their shoes and the dino. The doll has a matching backpack at their feet.
A small light green dinosaur wearing bright coral headphones. They have three darker green dots on their head and three spikes along the back and tail.

We got new internet service (Ziply Fiber), faster and better than our Xfinity. It’s been installed and is working great, so Greg says it’s time to cancel Xfinity, would I mind doing that? Gosh, would I mind telling Xfinity to suck it? <claps gleefully> Why I’d be happy to! So I go to the website. Options for moving, changing the plan, changing the type of service. Nowhere to cancel. Finally, I find out you have to schedule a time for THEM to call YOU to cancel. I click on "schedule a call".

@hollie So I started reading "Organizing for the Rest of Us" last night and holy shit I felt SO SEEN.

The first little bit of the book was basically that epiphany I had over the weekend.

I think the really key thing for me was finally realizing that decluttering and cleaning are two different things. Idk, my brain accepts it better if I realize that I don't mind cleaning. Less guilt/shame there (which is something to work through... later!)

hollie,
@hollie@social.coop avatar

@MsHearthWitch Oh that's great, I'm glad it's useful! :)

Yeah I enjoy cleaning too, but find decluttering stressful. But her container thing helps me a lot.

(Except that it's hard not to just yell out MOAR SHELVES as a solution to everything, lol)

hollie, to diy
@hollie@social.coop avatar

Epoxers, gluers, DIYers, hear my call! Okay so I got these yellow silicone things called Paint Pucks that suction to the inside of your water container and give you a spot to clean brushes. GENIUS! LIFE CHANGING! (Trust me) Except the little pucker keeps falling off. I tried two-part epoxy (with great epoxy comes great epoxibility HAHA HA 🦗) but it didn't work. The epoxy stuck (observe the nipple) but didn't adhere to the silicone. 😩 Is there a glue solution here?

The outside is the container, through which you can see the puck suctioning to the side.

Just finished The Psalm for the Wild-Built. I loved it! On Saturday night (game night), the group was playing a game I wasn’t into and I ran to my office to get something and ended up sitting there, painting and listening to the audiobook. It reached the part where Mosscap (the NAMES! <clutches chest>) explains to Dex how it came to be, how robots are made, and I nearly started crying. I love this book. Immediately downloaded the sequel (on libro.fm).

hollie,
@hollie@social.coop avatar

@MsHearthWitch Right?? Ahh geez, the optimistic, hopeful view of humanity, it's like a cool glass of water in the desert. I really needed this. Have you read the sequel? I'm only at the start but it's great so far.

hollie,
@hollie@social.coop avatar

@MsHearthWitch This is a very wise idea! If you haven't listened to the audiobook by Cary Elwes about the making of the Princess Bride (assuming you're a fan), I'd also recommend that one for a Cheerful Cache of stuff. :)

Today’s journal page is the bike ride to the post office. I parked the bike, sent the postcards down the chute, then took a quick photo as a reference, and painted this at my desk while I listen to A Psalm for the Wild-Built (goodbye everyone, I’m leaving to become a tea monk….).

Jupiter, to Miles: <hands phone to Miles> Bro! Mom won't get this but here, you'll know this meme, you know Germans right?

Me: <phone getting passed in front of my face> Jesus you guys I know who the Germans are

Jupiter: JERMA mom, it's Jerma, he's a YouTuber

Me: Okay yeah I have no idea who that is

@hollie@social.coop avatar

A friend of mine with a BA in English has been in and out of customer service jobs for a few years and is getting weary. She's thinking of trying to break into tech. She said she's "watching the WomenInTech subreddit and wishing wistfully". I asked if she's into programming or webdev or...? She said she'd just like to work from home, but it all sounds interesting and she isn't sure where to start ("so many paths!"). What would you all suggest?

Two years ago I lost my rain hat, which deeply offended me, as it was the best rain hat I'd ever found. I'd worn it over a decade. I'm big on hats generally, but rain hats in particular because I wear glasses. I finally went to the internet, where I panicked: they don't make it anymore! THE BEST RAIN HAT IN THE WORLD IS GONE, WHY GOD WH - oh wait...noo....they renamed it (good idea). Anyway, if you need a great rain hat, it's here: https://www.outdoorresearch.com/products/seattle-rain-hat-280135

I came across this spreadsheet of tea merchants a few months ago.

I rarely buy tea at a grocery store (or even a specialized tea merchant with a store, unless exceptional): most of the time the vendors on this list are just much, much better:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1B0ppCT6znyn_ObzmkopNLJCarJnBfdll1ccdfWxec8c/edit#gid=0

I buy most from: Wuyi Origin, Liquid Proust, Wang Family Tea. That's coz I mostly drink Chinese / Taiwanese teas, mostly pu-erhs and oolongs.

I want to try some Japanese teas soon from Sazen

hollie,

@skinnylatte @nomdeb I buy regularly from Harney and Sons and also Oregon Tea Traders, they're both very good.

Funny how my whole life I've had long hair, and then after chopping it off to about chin length last year I discovered the feeling of hair on my neck is a HUGE sensory issue for me.

In the chaos of my recent life I've let it get gasp to just above my shoulders and IT'S DRIVING ME NUTS!

hollie,
@hollie@social.coop avatar

@dyani I did the same thing last year, and discovered the same thing (how did I not know this about myself?). But then I was too lazy (and virally cautious) to visit a salon so I had to just let it grow back down again, and agghhh it was torture.

Do any of you have favorite iOS apps for ? I'd like one that lets me start a session, then tells me how far I went, and my pace. I think it'd help with some of my down days when I feel like I can't do much, to track the times when I am doing more.

I have MapMyFitness but it's a little obnoxious and screamy about calories and fitness and when I use it I just want to yell CALM DOWN at it.

Pedometer might work but costs $2/month. Which I suppose motivation is worth.

Comments?

I can't remember the last time I sat through two hours of a lecture and discussion on YouTube, but this was fascinating. Cory Doctorow gave the annual Marshall McLuhan lecture at the Transmediale festival in Berlin, and it ended up being a great explanation of enshittification. The speech is also on his website below the video, but I liked hearing it.
