Friend of the Court Briefs Filed in Internet Archive’s Appeal

From Lila Bailey, IA's senior policy counsel: "Last week saw a massive outpouring of support for the Internet Archive and our legal positions from prominent library and nonprofit organizations, as well as hundreds of librarians and academics, who filed amicus (“friend of the court”) briefs in the Hachette v. With SIX days left in 2023, we want to use this week to share SIX reasons to contribute to the Internet Archive.

6️⃣: The Team - Meet the incredible team behind the scenes at Internet Archive, headquartered in the heart of San Francisco, CA, with satellites spanning the globe! 🚀🌍

We’re on a mission to build a digital library for all—where everyone can dive into the vast tapestry of our shared human experience from books to web pages, audio to television, & software. 📚🎶📺 https://archive.org/donate/?origin=mstdn-eoy2023

Brewster Kahle, founder and digital librarian (00:01): Hi, I'm Brewster Kale, digital librarian and founder of the Internet Archive. There's only one week left before December 31st, and if you donate today, your donation is matched one-to-one, so it doubles the impact. We really appreciate your support. Thank you. Alexis Rossi, collections (00:17): Hi, my name is Alexis Rossi. I run the collections team here at the Internet Archive. Thank you so much for all of your donations. They really help us keep the archive in tip top condition. My team does lots of stuff, but one of the things that we do is sort through all of the things that get added into the Internet Archive. For example, we removed 250,000 spam items that you don't have to look at, which I bet you appreciate. And we also went through about 13 million user uploads this year in order to put them into collections and make them easier for all of our patrons to find. Thank you so much for helping us bring this work to the world. Andy Bezella, sys admin (00:58): I'm Andy Bezella. I'm a sys admin with the Internet Archive, and your donations have made it possible for us to continue to grow our storage to deal with the continued incoming fluxx of data that is always arriving on the shores of the Internet Archive. Lila Bailey, policy counsel (01:12): Hi, I'm Lila Bailey. I'm the Internet Archive's Senior Policy Council, and I just wanted to say thank you so much for helping us to defray the costs that

5️⃣: Our Collections - Our collections contain millions of books, movies, software, audio, and images. They are at the core of all the work we do, including exceptional research, journalism, and incredible projects. All of this is a result of your curiosity: https://archive.org/donate/?origin=mstdn-eoy2023

internetarchive,
@internetarchive@mastodon.archive.org avatar

4️⃣: Our servers! Did you know that the Internet Archive houses over 99+ unique petabytes (equivalent to the contents of 265 million filing cabinets) that include public texts, movies, audio, images, and more?

To sustain the growth of this collection over time we build and maintain all our own systems, rather than contracting them out to corporations. We need reliable infrastructure, which is why we rely on the support of our users. https://archive.org/donate/?origin=mstdn-eoy2023

internetarchive,
@internetarchive@mastodon.archive.org avatar

3️⃣: The Wayback Machine!

An invaluable resource for academics, researchers, reporters, activists, students and curious citizens worldwide—the Wayback Machine has allowed us to do some incredible things, like archiving the Ukrainian Internet, fighting misinformation through factual records and teaming up with the Library of Congress, U.S. Government Publishing Office, and others to do a deep and wide web-crawl of all U.S. government websites: https://archive.org/donate/?origin=mstdn-eoy2023

@internetarchive@mastodon.archive.org avatar

2️⃣: Empowering Research - As a research library in the 21st century, we're committed to empowering all researchers by embracing the digital era. From AI enthusiasts to scholars in biology, chemistry, economics, and humanities. The Internet Archive's vast petabytes of data cater to a wide range of researchers, as the digital age has made it possible for wider access to our resources: https://archive.org/donate/?origin=mstdn-eoy2023

@internetarchive@mastodon.archive.org avatar

1️⃣: Preservation - It is up to us to preserve humanity’s knowledge. This is why the Internet Archive has worked for the past 25 years to protect and archive valuable cultural products online and offline. Thanks to the generosity of our patrons, we’ve grown from a small preservation project into a vast library that serves millions of people each year: https://archive.org/donate/?origin=mstdn-eoy2023
