Scientists tracked a young #whale's journey before he vanished. What they learned could help save his species.
#Bishop’s story, from birth to presumed death, shows the extreme danger facing right #whales, which could be extinct in 3 decades if they continue to disappear at the present rate. Bishop’s species is not doomed to #extinction …but time is running out.
In most ways #Bishop was a normal #RightWhale. For the first year of his life, his mother nursed & protected him, & he learned to feed by swimming, mouth agape, through patches of plankton floating near the surface.
But on Jan 20, 2015, Bishop became something more: a precious source of data that would help scientists better understand the dangers afflicting his species.
So far this year, a dead female turned up off Virginia w/ a dislocated spine, a calf was discovered in Georgia w/head lacerations, & a young female was found — again in Georgia — w/ a fractured skull. All the injuries are consistent with #vessel strikes.

An amazing write-up by a passionate preservationist, Chris Person (@Papapishu on Twitter), on why YOU are the only one that can save media you love. 💿 📀 📽️ 📹 :hd_dvd_spin: :blobfoxcomputer:
The first meeting tonight intersecting urban growth with historic preservation was filled with angry uninformed people blurting out half baked rants. The meeting right after across town on the same topic was filled with insightful and curious people asking thoughtful questions about growth strategies. Guess which meeting had the NIMBYs? #Urbanism#Housing#Preservation#Petaluma

This zoning textbook I am reading suggests that design review originated in Westmount, Canada, a wealthy English speaking enclave within Francophone Montreal. There are a number of attractive mansions there and they have gone to great lengths to preserve their built environment. #preservation#design#montrealhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westmount
We get so much talk of “video game preservation”, this is far more important. We could one day lose vital scientific research. Losing video games would be a bit sad but we’d survive, losing scientific research would be devastating and it would take decades to recover, if we ever do. #Science#Publishing#Preservation
Study finds that we could lose science if publishers go bankrupt
I am a public historian volunteering my services at a historic site in the beginning stages of preserving two buildings, built in 1870s. The director really wants to start going after a large grant, but I feel they need to establish a foundation first. For those who are in this process, or who have successfully completed preservation projects, what were the initial steps you took towards that first big grant? Thanks!
Good grief, I only just noticed that the Wayback Machine browser extension adds not just a menubar item – it also adds a contextual menu. At least in Safari on macOS, if you right-click on a page, you have access to it there.
Occasional reminder that the Internet Archive provides a number of tools and browser plugins to let you send pages to the Wayback Machine (as well as check if a given page has been saved):
Of possible interest, especially now for #BlackHistoryMonth. These are part of the #WPA recordings of former slaves (you know, back when the US Gov. did some seriously useful stuff).
#NowReading - eleanor patterson's engaging new history of #radio & #television#preservation by fans, mostly non-music. fascinating close studies (that also capture the fun) of old time radio heads, buddy cop obsessives, australian trekkies, & regional wrestling VHS traders & their respective creative solutions to pre-WWW distribution challenges. an affirmation of #piracy's long, rich legacy & its vitality in the #streaming age. https://www.press.uillinois.edu/books/?id=p087691#books
