Will you be using the new sudo replacement? 👀

jimmyhoke,

@itsfoss I’m pretty used to sudo, but I’m interested. It seems more secure and pretty neat.

The problem with traveling across Europe and looking at hundreds' of years of art until my head was brimming with it is that now I have Art Thoughts and people do not come to me for Art Thoughts.

jimmyhoke,
@jimmyhoke@fosstodon.org avatar

@evacide Hi, I’m here coming to you for art thoughts. What’s your opinion on Impressionist art. I’m a little conflicted because I like it, but I feel like it started the long decline that ultimately resulted in Corporate Memphis.

I just love that we live in a system where all the free work you do for the common good has absolutely zero value and you’re only deemed successful if what you do makes money.

And then you wonder why you’ve ended up with the Elon Musks of the world.

jimmyhoke,
@jimmyhoke@fosstodon.org avatar

@aral Only if you rely on society for your own validation.

Can we stop moving fast and breaking things. Software quality is in the toilet and nothing is implemented well. Nobody needs these half baked features anyway.

What ever happened to working slowly and making a quality product. We need to have pride in our craft.

Em0nM4stodon, to privacy

I just would like to point out that
none of the accounts I was forced to create for job applications so far had any options for multi-factor authentication or for deleting the account.

And all of the accounts I was forced
to create for job applications so far required to enter very sensitive information that was completely unnecessary to require.

Don’t. Do. This.
Please. Stop.

jimmyhoke,
@jimmyhoke@fosstodon.org avatar

@Em0nM4stodon I don’t know why you can’t just upload a resume and a cover letter the be done with it.

I just got the most dystopian YouTube ad. It's made using an AI to sound like Donald Trump warning everyone that America is about to be attacked and the food supply will be destroyed. The link just goes to some weird website selling meal rations 🥴

jimmyhoke,

@travis @thisismissem @malwaretech At some point we need to hold ad companies criminally responsible for completely ignoring rampant and obvious abuse of their systems.

I love the Internet Archive, but they made some really bad decisions. You can’t just give away copyrighted books to everyone with no limits because you’re a “library” and it’s a “national emergency.”

Even if they survive the lawsuit, we need a better way to archive stuff. The Internet Archive is a single point of failure, and besides that it’s a ridiculously slow website anyway.

Does anyone have ideas for an alternative?

What are your true opinions and thoughts on marriage?

Just for fun, this is a photo from my wedding day (ignore the reflection of my phone lol) I was all of 21.

jimmyhoke,
@jimmyhoke@fosstodon.org avatar

@RickiTarr Oh this is a fun one.

I’m Catholic, so marriage has a lot of religious significance to me. A married couple should be a team, working for the Beirut of the other both spiritually and in daily life. Spouses should care for each other and help each other follow God.

For society, it is useful to organize into stable families, especially for raising children. A two-parent household ideally can provide a stable environment to raise children. Unstable homes create problems down the line.

jimmyhoke,
@jimmyhoke@fosstodon.org avatar

@RickiTarr I will also note that I think marriage is still worth it, because to me it is more than a fancy roommate with sex and tax breaks. It’s a lifelong promise.

I’m so sick of hearing “AI ethicists” worrying about what AI might do and ignoring all the damage it has already done.

No I don’t care about your hypothetical AGI, people are being harmed by deepfakes, replaced by chat bots, and flooded by with generated spam.

ars technica: we don't know how they did it but google chrome now extracts a pint of blood every time you log on

chrome user, dizzy from blood loss: I swear to god I am like this close to switching to firefox

another chrome user, on the verge of fainting from severe blood loss: no need to resort to that, just switch to [insert today's trendy chrome fork here] and be smart like meeee

jimmyhoke,

@aeva Sure I had to sacrifice my firstborn to install it, but I really don't feel like switching.

    Jae, to linux

    You know, I think I've realized something that makes me feel so attached to in general.

    The fact that it's so... just great at being a traditional desktop experience, but super easily tweak-able, takes me back to when I first got my Windows 7 laptop as kid.

    I absolutely loved it. The possibilities felt endless on what I could do online or just within the operating system. Now, I feel that feeling once again moving to Linux and having the insane flexibility of KDE.

    I didn't expect this post to get so personal, but I suppose that's just how life is. Thank you, @kde, for helping bring my pure love and desire to learn tech back to life. It's been a while since I've felt this. 💞

    jimmyhoke,

    @Jae @kde Agreed, KDE is like windows 7 but way better.

    @stux it seems like windows copilot has a lot of potential issue with privacy. People have a tendency to fork over tons of information to chat it's without realizing it goes to the cloud. It being built into windows will make this even worse.

    Also, I thinks it’s funny how they predicted online shopping, but thought you would have a physical card reader in your computer. That’s such an odd design choice.
