In HTML, don't use type="number" use type="text" inputmode="numeric" instead.

number silently restricts input, inputmode provides the number keyboard on mobile without any of the downsides.

Error messages are far more helpful than input restriction - this goes for maxlength too

The thing about the Vercel V0 accessibility situation is how predictable it was:

  • Tech excluding disabled people
  • When that is raised, tech fanboys attacking those people
  • Centrist 'theres problems on both sides' takes

and in this case:

  • We know AI amplifies existing biases

This is not a one off, it happens over and over. That's why accessibility people are frustrated.

I'll be looking for contract work from October, I'm an interaction/service design lead with a lot of experience, based in London.

Previously led design on Register to Vote, Petition Parliament and the GOV.UK Prototype Kit.

Particularly interested in accessibility, social good, that sort of thing.

Appreciate any boosts! Open to any chats

Currently free and looking for contract work - I'm an experienced designer (interaction, service) with over 10 years at UK Government Digital Service. My work there included leading design for Register to Vote, Petition Parliament and the GOV.UK Prototype Kit.

Give me a shout if you know of anything, and appreciate any boosts, ta!

When getting into , a lot of people will try VoiceOver screen reader with Chrome, as that's what's closest to hand.

It's really important to know that screen reader/browser combos all act quite differently, and that specific one is relatively uncommon.

The WebAIM survey is a good place to get a better understanding of the tools people use

A lot of people are finding LLMs more useful than Google search.

I think a huge part of that is that Google and web in general has massively deteriorated in terms of finding clear, concise answers. Even if you can find it, it's covered in ads, cookie popups and so on.

But LLMs will inevitably follow the same path - investors want their returns. And the complete non transparency of LLMs will make it even worse this time around. Is that really the best answer or is it sponsored?

At GOV.UK we avoid disabling buttons.

If the user submits a form with a problem, they get a useful error message telling them how to fix it.

Disabled buttons are hard to make accessible for people with low vision, and can't easily be focused using the keyboard

@joelanman@hachyderm.io avatar

Prioritise internal . If disabled people are included, safe, happy, empowered in your org, that's the basis for making your service accessible

In the public sector we're often told to follow what the private sector do, that they are the model to follow. In reality, we do some things better in the public sector: accessibility, user research that is not led by profit, working in the open, avoiding deceptive patterns, going slow and not breaking things. The web itself came from the public sector, we can all learn from each other.

I know Meta is awful but it is worth thinking about how bad an org culture has to be to launch Threads with no alt text. Surely it has to be illegal to discriminate against disabled people like that

Ah great so Vercel is claiming their AI component builder is 'production grade' while it outputs inaccessible code. So predictable

It's such a shame when we get new native controls that aren't accessible (see also date input). The default Switch does not have clearly labelled states. It relies on colour and position which is not enough
