The 300-square-mile Telescope Array experiment in Utah detected a cosmic ray with an energy of 240 quintillion electron volts. That's as much energy as a thrown brick, jammed into a single subatomic particle.

On May 27, 2021, the Telescope Array experiment detected the second-highest extreme-energy cosmic ray. At 2.4 x 1020eV, the energy of this single subatomic particle is equivalent to dropping a brick on your toe from waist height. Led by the University of Utah (the U) and the University of Tokyo, the Telescope Array consists of 507 surface detector stations arranged in a square grid that covers 700 km2 (~270 miles2) outside of Delta, Utah in the state’s West Desert. The event triggered 23 detectors at the north-west region of the Telescope Array, splashing across 48 km2 (18.5 mi2). Its arrival direction appeared to be from the Local Void, an empty area of space bordering the Milky Way galaxy.

The "Arecibo Message" was beamed towards globular cluster M13 in 1974, during the dedication of an upgrade to the radio telescope. It was the first message sent with the intention of alerting extraterrestrials to life on earth.

The message was 1679 bits, arrayed into 73 rows and 23 columns. It contained depictions of the numbers 1-10, the solar system, the human form, and info about the elements and biochemical structures associated with life on Earth.

@ai6yr I wish they could make the various interfaces more consistent though. My go-to site for viewing precipitation data is https://www.cnrfc.noaa.gov/ol.php?type=precip. But that's just for CA and NV and a bit of OR and AZ. I've never been able to find something as detailed or flexible for other parts of the country. Can't find it on the weather.gov site either.

I still remember the name of the kid at my Junior High School who showed up the day after "Planet of the Apes" premiered before anyone else had a chance to see it and ran around telling everyone "He's on Earth at the end!" I sometimes wonder what happened to him. But if there's any justice in the universe, I can guess.
