@petep44 @GottaLaff A quick Google search suggests that it has to be within 30 days. That's pretty darn tight; in California you get 60. I imagine there will be a motion for new trial before then; that's pretty routine. The appeal itself can drag on for a while; the ones I used to do averaged about a year. But who knows, the appellate court ("Supreme Court, Appellate Division," as it's weirdly known in New York) may choose to hustle things along on this one.

@Nonilex Besides, striking comments like that is 100% futile. Actually it's worse than futile; it just draws attention to them. The old saying is "if you throw a skunk into the jury box, you can't instruct the jury not to smell it," but if you TRY to instruct the jury not to smell it, you'll just get them thinking really hard about how bad it is.

Via Andrew Weissmann said this last night. These are creative, and hopefully potentially effective, options:

options in addition to fine/jail:

  • put a monitor over his use of social media posts
  • hold sentence on a contempt finding until after trial over
  • advise Trump that his contempt of gag order can be considered at sentencing upon conviction.

All can be used by Judge Merchan.

@MarkRDavid @GottaLaff I came here to say that. His social media posts are quite closely monitored already. It's not like he can post stuff on Truth without anyone noticing. If there were a court-appointed monitor, then one more person would notice, but that doesn't address the question "so, then what?"

@Nonilex Of course, the MAGA responses to that would be (a) everybody knows the National Bureau of Whatever is a front for the Biden crime family, so of course they're lying, (b) that's because law enforcement ignores crime by immigrants and goes after white US-born men because they're all run by woke politicians, and (c) that's because immigrant criminals are sneaky and devious and learned how to not get caught from criminal masterminds back in their home countries. There's no point trying to persuade these people with facts (not, I realize, that that's what you were trying to do).

@GottaLaff I don't think he's a flight risk, despite the fact that he owns an airplane. If he high-tails it for Moscow, that would destroy his chances of being elected President, and I think that's more important to him than avoiding whatever Merchan is going to sentence him to.

Someone apparently tried to file an appeal in the Trump January 6 case. WTF?? PACER won't let me see the document, but I'm dying of curiosity. Anybody have any idea what this was about? Rule 3(C) is just the high-level description of the required elements of a notice of appeal, if that helps.

My clever Henry did a really nice thing for me today. The track wheel on my fancy Logitech Lightspeed gaming mouse had quit working, and I had resigned myself to having to buy a new one. Right about when I was discovering that this model has become kind of rare and they're painfully pricey to replace, Henry jumped up onto my desk and kicked the mouse to the floor. The battery cover came off and the battery came out. When I reassembled it, the scroll wheel was working. Good boy Henry!

Hey people: anyone have any recommendations for the best product for cleaning up cat pee? The go-to stuff used to be Nature's Miracle; is that still the best, or has modern science come up with something even better?

(Asking for a friend. No, really. My own cats are perfect little angels about peeing in appropriate places, which is why I haven't had to deal with this issue for a few years.)

Henry likes to play with string. He's old-school: he likes to play with STRING, thank you very much, not with those newfangled feather toys and mousie toys and assorted doodads that humans sometimes attach to it. He regards such pointless additions with scorn. But a piece of pure unadorned wiggly string will keep him happy for . . . well, I don't know how long. In my four years of being Henry's human companion, I've never once known him to get tired of playing with string; it's always me that poops out first.
