The walls and sally port of Fort Anne National Historic Site in Annapolis Royal Nova Scotia. The trees are bare of leaves and there is a feeling of solitude in the first snow of the season https://fineartamerica.com/featured/winters-watch-karen-cook.html?newartwork=true

"If you have the urge, don't be afraid to go on a wild goose chase. What do you think wild geese are for anyway?". Will Rogers

Is there a sight (or a sound) more indicative of autumn and the approach of winter, than Canada Geese migrating south?

The sound of honking and gabbling grabbed my attention as I walked along the trail on a mid-October morning. Looking up, I spotted not one but three flocks of Canada Geese flying.

For each thorn..there is a rosebud.
For each twilight - a dawn.
For each trial - the strength to carry on.
For each storm cloud - a rainbow.
For each shadow - the sun.
For each parting - sweet memories when sorrow is done.

Words of encouragement, support, sympathy and remembrance from Ralph Waldo Emerson pair beautifully with a single rosebud https://fineartamerica.com/featured/for-each-thorn-there-is-a-rosebud-karen-cook.html?newartwork=true

Nearing the end of its life as a blooming sunflower, this sunflower blossom is wilted and drooping.

But its life is not over...not yet!

All those seeds will become a tasty and much needed natural food source for birds and small forest animals to get them through the harshness of a winter.

Its sunshine petals are not shining any longer...it is sunset. https://fineartamerica.com/featured/sunset-karen-cook.html

"Smell the sea and feel the sky. Let your soul and spirit fly" - Van Morrison.

A chair for you and one for me to sit in, relax, and enjoy the view of the LaHave River in .

But it is the smell of the sea and the feel of the sky that draws me there. Let's have a seat in one of those colorful Adirondack chairs, so we can let our souls and spirits fly.. https://fineartamerica.com/featured/smell-the-sea-and-feel-the-sky-karen-cook.html

In 1953, a man in Pugwash discovered an underground deposit of salt.

Since then the Canadian Salt Company has been mining salt from what is the only salt mine and only underground mine in operation in Nova Scotia. With shafts extending down into the earth at depths of 1000 feet, into working rooms of salt with diameters of 30 x 55 feet, the refinery produces over 1.2 million tonnes of salt per year. https://fineartamerica.com/featured/salt-mine-pugwash-nova-scotia-karen-cook.html

The feathers on the back of an American Goldfinch are just as lovely as the ones on the front of this tiny but colorful songbird. Deep black feathers on its wings and tail compliment the sunshine bright yellow of the rest of its body.

And the yellow feathers match the yellow petals of a sunflower perfectly! https://fineartamerica.com/featured/turn-your-back-to-the-sun-karen-cook.html?newartwork=true

  • A vibrant red flower stands out with its delicate petals against a backdrop of green foliage. Long thin leaves sprout from its top, adding to its elegant structure.

The Crown Imperial, also known as fritillaria imperalis, kaiser's crown or Kurdish tulip, is a a flowering member of the lily family. https://fineartamerica.com/featured/crown-imperial-karen-cook.html?newartwork=true

St. Mary's Anglican Church in is an historic . Legend has it the walls are filled with crushed mussel shells from the Bay of Fundy for insulation! The church is virtually unchanged since it was built in 1790 https://fineartamerica.com/featured/the-mussel-church-karen-cook.html
