Eek. Apparently liblzma (part of the xz package) has a backdoor in versions 5.6.0 and 5.6.1, causing SSH to be compromised.

https://www.openwall.com/lists/oss-security/2024/03/29/4

This might even have been done on purpose by the upstream devs.

Developing story, please take with a grain of salt.

The 5.6 versions are somewhat recent, depending on how bleeding edge your distro is you might not be affected.

This is super weird...today I noticed my video about Richard Dawkins had zero comments (previously it had hundreds) and digging into the settings, YouTube turned off comments somehow. I've turned them back on but did the algorithm just fuck me over? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_PWRZPi67Mc

ke7yxz,
@ke7yxz@mastodon.social avatar

@rebeccawatson I apologize if I am being argumentative, but your wording is stronger: “but did the algorithm just fuck me over?” I do not think I am being thin-skinned or puritanical.

But back to my point, I suggest it is an inept programmer acting under deadlines rather than a focused attempt to fuck over or protect any individual. I have no data to support this beyond anecdotal experience.

Modern software development be like: I wrote 10 lines of code to call an API that calls another API, which calls yet another API that finally turns on a lightbulb. Pray that Cloudflare or AWS will not be down during this operation; otherwise, there will be no light for you.

ke7yxz,
@ke7yxz@mastodon.social avatar

@nixCraft Those 10 limes of code compile down to 52.9 megabytes of executable and you have to reboot the operating system after installing the app.

UNIX was created back in the day when we couldn't afford vowels, and many consonants. So common commands had to be shortened a little bit:
"Copy" becomes "cp"
"List" becomes "ls"
"Rename" becomes "mv" and so on.

But fear not. Soon systemd will restore the balance with long command names again. This is 2024 and 70's okay?

ke7yxz,
@ke7yxz@mastodon.social avatar

@nixCraft I was told that {Brian|Dennis} was asked in an interview if he would change anything on the UNIX design. He thought a moment and replied, "I would spell 'creat' with an 'e'". Source: unknown.

The Bombing of Guernica happened today in 1937. It was a new and horrible cooperation between fascists states (Francoist Spain, Nazi Germany, and Fascist Italy) to bomb civilians and ultimately lay the blame for the mass casualties on "guerrillas”, “terrorists”... in this case “Reds”.

WashPo reports on California's duck curve: too much solar energy production in the middle of the day has over the years depressed electricity prices, sometimes below $0. (California's net metering incentivizes solar + battery for that reason.) https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-environment/2024/04/22/california-solar-duck-curve-rooftop/

ke7yxz,
@ke7yxz@mastodon.social avatar

@stshank I do not see the problem. California is not an island. There is a large national grid. Sell the excess to the cloudy places. Charge electric cars. If anything, this is not a solar problem but a transmission problem with a storage annotation.

ke7yxz,
@ke7yxz@mastodon.social avatar

@ai6yr I am out of it now, but I spent nearly 50 years in the corporate world on the engineering and engr-management side. Besides all the stuff going on in the other departments, engineers loved to pull the caste structures into their own lives with layers and layers of titles. At Bell Labs (decades ago), the MTS Member of Tech Staff title included people from newly graduated to Nobel Laureates. Other companies had titles that encompassed 5% salary deltas. Goofy gradations.
