Big news for the fediverse' favourite photo sharing platform!

We've submitted our mobile app to Android + Apple App Stores!

@pixelfed @hexaheximal That's great news. Must have missed that announcement somehow. Thanks!

@hexaheximal @pixelfed Because AFAIK it isn't open-source, which is a real pity.

A tough but very important piece by @deadsuperhero .

Read this. We need to fix this.

kris,

@J12t By being less naive about who and who isn't an abuser. Activist spaces have a long history of highly abusive members (of any gender) that look the look and walk the talk at least on initial appearances, but are in reality narcisstic abusers that make everything about them and their profile in the community. This has all the hallmarks of that.

🆕 blog! “Can you trust ProtonApps.com?”

I've recently signed up to the privacy-preserving service Proton. All the email, calendar, drive, VPN, and other services seem to hang off the proton.me domain. I wanted to download the Android apps to my phone - without using the Google Play Store. The VPN app is on F-Droid but none of the others are. So, […]

@Edent @PC_Fluesterer F-droid has their own build infrastructure and (with very few exceptions) only allows apps in their repo that can be build cleanly from FOSS code. IzzyOnDroid is a 3rd party repository for the F-droid app that allows developers to directly upload binary .apks for distribution. The security implications should be obvious...

As my research relates to and , I launched a collaborative web notebook on the topic:

https://solarpunkarchitecture.org/

It is based on Discord forum with bells and whistles, so there is some Activitypub support for categories. You can follow them here:

@justinas Discourse not Discord though. I was highly confused at first about ActivityPub support in Discord (the chat app that also has internal forums these days).

volpeon, (edited ) to random

Why do all chat services suck

  • IRC is old and lacks basic features
  • XMPP clients feel outdated or are janky
  • Matrix is over-engineered
  • Telegram requires a phone number
  • Discord
  • Signal requires a phone number
  • For the rest point 2 applies
kris,
@kris@outmo.de avatar

@crazy_pony @aslmx @volpeon I had no problem on boarding "modern" people to https://join.movim.eu but the OMEMO implementation for group chats sadly needs some further work in it.

Not talking about self-hosting here, but rather on how to create and assemble a team for building a small business of selling compute, storage

@impactology AFAIK no, but that really isn't that different from scaling up a homelab. Probably a good place to start a discussion about this would be https://slrpnk.net/c/selfhosting

kris,

@liaizon maybe with the exception of company developed software like Mastodon gGmbH, highlighting the nationality of just one of many open-source developers seems like a bad idea.

I think it might be interesting to have a column if the software is developed by a company, a non-profit, an informal community or a lone developer though.

Gonna use social media for its intended purpose: to complain about minute bullshit.

Today is blah and I am exhausted from yesterday and I can't get a job to save my life and it's getting to be hard on my mental health.

Admitting to that last one makes me feel all vulnerable, and hyper-aware that I'm letting capitalism dictate my self-worth and I talk a big talk about not letting that happen but my lizard brain has been very well programmed. Blush.

kris,
@kris@outmo.de avatar

@arielkroon Yeah, having been under-employed ever since the pandemic started (partially by choice), I can very much relate to the last point. Hard to shake off despite knowing better of course. Doing some unpaid volunteer work (even online) helps me starve off the lizard brain a bit, but I don't don't really have an answer to this either. Hugs :neocat_hug_bun_sad:

What would be the essential features that you would expect in a #team #chat? I mean features that you actually use at work or in association, or you would very much like to see.

I'm asking to check how far we are in common #XMPP clients, but don't hesitate to quote features event if they are already present in some clients.

@Goffi easy invites for new users and support for webhooks for automated notifications from various services.

Syncthing and other similar software are great, but sometimes you just want a simple, lightweight, and fast way to mirror things, specially if the remote and/or local machines have limited resources.

Here is my ultra minimalistic set and forget (I hope) 2-in-1 rsync based mirror script that can be used in a cron and called manually at the same time. If there is a problem with the transfer, you even get an email.

@320x200 for a slightly more advanced setup I found https://github.com/kd2org/karadav quite nice for WebDAV.

aks, to Matrix
@aks@scalie.zone avatar

I'll repeat my old take on #matrix, #XMPP and #IRC chat protocols.

These protocols are open, thus there is no reason to not make them interoperable.

In the end users dont care about protocol, they care about client. And users can choose any client they wish.

If all three can be seamlessly talk to each other, we'll have beautiful solution.

Even better if it can be done without bridges (or the bridges are built in to clients/protocols)

Instead of fighting over "the one true protocol" we should make them as seamlessly interoperable as possible!

We have zero excuse. These three (and probably more!) are all open.

I would love to help as well.

#FOSS

kris,
@kris@outmo.de avatar

@aks yes this is how and -irc work, all users are "real" users on all three protocols.

kris,
@kris@outmo.de avatar

@aks the closest one can reliably get to that idea right now is an #Ergo #IRC network with first party gateways allowing access from #XMPP and #Matrix. I run such a network and while I wish the current gateways had better #IRCv3 support, it is working quite well overall.

aks, to Matrix
@aks@scalie.zone avatar

Can i use my homeserver as server? Or do i have to spin up separate xmpp server and then use puppet bridge?

kris,
@kris@outmo.de avatar

@Menel @aks Bifrost needs both a Synapse Matrix server and a Prosody XMPP server to function. It might work also with Ejabberd but I think that is untested.

People talk about the "lack of an algorithm" on Mastodon a lot, but one thing I love about it that this doesn't capture is how my timeline is almost entirely bicycle and co-op related content and that this is by design. I've followed several hash tags, groups, etc. and heavily curated what I see. You can't do that on Twitter and the like because the algorithm will insist on showing you content that it thinks will drive engagement. Mastodon does have an algorithm, it's just a user driven one.

kris,
@kris@outmo.de avatar

@sam I think the problem is mainly that new users start out with an very empty timeline. Some very profilic boosters kinda make up for that by suggesting other accounts to follow, but some more options for instance admins to suggest stuff would be nice. Akkoma for example has the Bubble concept that allows instance admins to add a set of trusted instances that appear in a combined feed similar to the local one.
