I'll repeat my old take on , and chat protocols.

These protocols are open, thus there is no reason to not make them interoperable.

In the end users dont care about protocol, they care about client. And users can choose any client they wish.

If all three can be seamlessly talk to each other, we'll have beautiful solution.

Even better if it can be done without bridges (or the bridges are built in to clients/protocols)

Instead of fighting over "the one true protocol" we should make them as seamlessly interoperable as possible!

We have zero excuse. These three (and probably more!) are all open.

I would love to help as well.

@kris@outmo.de avatar

@aks the closest one can reliably get to that idea right now is an network with first party gateways allowing access from and . I run such a network and while I wish the current gateways had better support, it is working quite well overall.

People talk about the "lack of an algorithm" on Mastodon a lot, but one thing I love about it that this doesn't capture is how my timeline is almost entirely bicycle and co-op related content and that this is by design. I've followed several hash tags, groups, etc. and heavily curated what I see. You can't do that on Twitter and the like because the algorithm will insist on showing you content that it thinks will drive engagement. Mastodon does have an algorithm, it's just a user driven one.

kris,
@kris@outmo.de avatar

@sam I think the problem is mainly that new users start out with an very empty timeline. Some very profilic boosters kinda make up for that by suggesting other accounts to follow, but some more options for instance admins to suggest stuff would be nice. Akkoma for example has the Bubble concept that allows instance admins to add a set of trusted instances that appear in a combined feed similar to the local one.

Can i use my homeserver as server? Or do i have to spin up separate xmpp server and then use puppet bridge?

kris,
@kris@outmo.de avatar

@Menel @aks Bifrost needs both a Synapse Matrix server and a Prosody XMPP server to function. It might work also with Ejabberd but I think that is untested.

volpeon, (edited ) to random

Why do all chat services suck

  • IRC is old and lacks basic features
  • XMPP clients feel outdated or are janky
  • Matrix is over-engineered
  • Telegram requires a phone number
  • Discord
  • Signal requires a phone number
  • For the rest point 2 applies
kris,
@kris@outmo.de avatar

@crazy_pony @aslmx @volpeon I had no problem on boarding "modern" people to https://join.movim.eu but the OMEMO implementation for group chats sadly needs some further work in it.

@Revertron you can run it via Podman and enable auto-updates with Systemd easily.

Hard not to feel like this spam attack is the end of an era for Mastodon. The possibility of doing this has always been here, but now that it's actually happened we're going to see it happen more often.

The fact that smaller hobbyist instances have been the main vector for this is going to have knock on effects on other small hobbyist instances.

kris,
@kris@outmo.de avatar

@Anarcat @jacob @misty While allow-list federation is certainly something people will talk about more, isn't the main problem of the current spam wave that not well monitored hobbyist instances have open registration?

I really hope that software defaults will switch to invite based or similar methods as hobbyist instances really have no business in running public servers that easily become spam vectors.

@liaizon Not sure... my take away from the Wired story is that it will be half-broken with only a c2s interface, no group-chats and you need to sign a contract with Meta to be able to use it. Smells more like malicious compliance to me...

We want to change this in @prav and allow Prav users to choose a custom username which will hide their phone number in groups.

We need your support to implement this. Please contribute to our fund raising campaign.

kris,

@tbss For now there are only two banks involved in the pilot, one in Germany and one in Hungary. You will have to wait a bit longer I guess. In general, your best bet will be a bank that is part of the coop bank system and Santander is AFAIK not.

Mildly interesting: there's this oft-shared Vonnegut quote, "We are here on Earth to fart around. Don't let anybody tell you any different."

I believe the sense you get from that quote is a kind of hedonic nihilism - there's no point to life but hey, let's fart around. In fact, the quote comes after a long anecdote on how computers broke his connection with his typist, a dear friend who he used to talk to and joke with a lot. The full passage is:

kris,
@kris@outmo.de avatar

@ZachWeinersmith would be interesting to hear the side of the typist. It might have been rather one-sided and electronic communities do make it easier to drop out. But mutually respectful online communities can work work fine for "farting around".

It’s nice to see some sunshine today. The challenge I’ve got is when it’s cloudy I really need the 4 I have, but when it’s sunny I don’t.
It’s time to start thinking about how I can utilise this extra power.

I probably should invest in a better battery but also perhaps an inverter so I could run an occasional household appliance off the solar.

It’s tricky on a small scale.

kris,
@kris@outmo.de avatar

@smallsolar I was struggling with the same. I don't have the entire house hooked up to my smaller solar system, but I ended up being able to run a air to water heatpump for shower water from my battery (supplementing an older solar thermal heater).

I just learned of the biggest #bullshit feature I heard of: "view once" images in #WhatsApp. The idea is that if you send an image and select the "view once" option, the receiver may only "view it once". After that, it's deleted. And they claim it "prevents screenshots". How? I have no idea.

It doesn't matter because the whole concept is bullshit, of course.

I'm not going to be prescriptive (I have my preferences for co-op structures) but I'm not sure having a single volunteer sys admin for an instance is the way to go. It's too much pressure and hard work, especially if the person is working alone.

I think we need better and more organised structures better suited to longevity.

@kawaiipunk we have been thinking of better horizontal coordination via a Loomio exchange forum: https://groups.f-hub.org/fedi-admin-guild/
