I'm honestly considering a paid verification program in Pixelfed to help sustain the project long term.

It would be a centralized list, and would be present in clients, regardless of server.

A blue checkmark would not only help our project financially, but would also provide a trusted visual mark of verification.

Thoughts?

kris,
@kris@outmo.de avatar

@dansup Having it in the client regardless of the server would in practise mean built-in telemetry, no? I don't think that would go down well with the typically privacy conscious Fediverse crowd.

Also, while I agree that having a way to support the creators of the software would be nice, I think any such system should somehow also allow supporting the instance administrators, as running the services isn't cheap either.

Thank you all for welcoming me to the Fediverse!
I came from reddit, where I have been a mod of the r/HopePunk sub for quite some time.

Everyone knows what happened to Reddit, and probably knows about Lemmy as well.

I'm here to post about , , , , , and about making the future a better place for us all.

There will also be . Oh yes.

Okay, if you’re on , @moshidon is legit a fantastic client for Android. This is straight up my default client now. It supports:

  • Markdown / MFM
  • Emoji Reacts
  • Quote Posts
  • Bubble Timeline

Plus it looks great, has a ton of customization options, and you can tweak a ton of different pieces to make it do what you want?!

kris,
@kris@outmo.de avatar

@deadsuperhero @moshidon Works really nicely, the only issue I could find is that the auto-translate option doesn't seem to work with my Akkoma instance (it works on Akkoma-fe and Phanpy).

It would be also nice if there was a way to manually configure the language of the app, as right now it seems to always use the system language with no way of changing that.

cherti, to Matrix

Hey, I'm currently doing a little research on the cost of modern social media and messaging, given that cost is an everlasting discussion when trying to move people to more free alternatives.

I am still looking for data for messaging, such as and . So if you have or know someone who operates a somewhat sizable instance for either XMPP or Matrix and would potentially share some details about operational cost with me I would love to hear about it! :)

Thank you so much! 💙

:BoostOK:

kris,
@kris@outmo.de avatar

@cherti You read a lot about high memory usage of Synapse due to it being written in Python etc., but the real crux in running a public Matrix server is fast database storage and overall storage. Due to its replicating nature Matrix is very database i/o heavy, meaning you need fast SSD storage and a lot of it. Database sizes of 300GB are rather common, which puts running a Matrix server way out of the league of most cheap VPS offers. In addition Synapse caches all the media uploads, which is a nice feature but also requires a lot of storage.

XMPP on the other hand might be somewhat less feature-full but the cost of running a server is basically a rounding error even for bigger deployments.

@muppeth might have some additional input as Disroot decided to shut down their rather large Synapse server a while ago and replaced it with XMPP.

I don't have money for college and integrating into a classroom is really difficult for me. I want to improve my skills to pass the direct admission test for a high school, or at least improve as much as i can trying.

The cheapest plan is a year, which is 109 Euros without taxes. The monthly subscription is 16, which would be 192 Euros.

my brilliant profile is public, you will be able to verify that i indeed spent the money on it and that i will be really active.

kris,
@kris@outmo.de avatar

@YoSoyFreeman That seems rather cheap, but I don't really get how some app subscription would help you getting some sort of formal qualification, especially if it is not developed for your home country's requirements.

kris,
@kris@outmo.de avatar

@YoSoyFreeman Maybe I am showing my age here, but wouldn't it be more effective to buy a regular prep. book especially for this exam that is adapted to your country's school curriculum and language? I am near certain that exists.

@aral @drewdevault @otfrom To my knowledge the KaiOS fork of Boot2Gecko is and remains FOSS. They added an proprietary UI for feature-phones on top of that, but the GPL would not prevent that either, no? There is by the way a new project that takes improvements from KaiOS's Boot2Gecko and adds an new FOSS UI on top of that: https://capyloon.org/

kris,
@kris@outmo.de avatar

As far as I can see, Perma Computing community is too focused on the artistic aspect of computing. Which hardly covers the most energy intensive, ubiquitous parts of the computing world.

Unless the conversation is taken to tackle higher impact fields, the output of the community is more like the conceptual fashion shows:
a vanity demonstration. A limited proof of concept.

Such a disappointing realization.

A friend of mine suggested I post online about a thing that I need help with financially and I've found myself extremely uncomfortable with the idea. I'm having trouble examining where that reticence comes from though. I can't tell if this is some ingrained toxic-masculinity around independence, a sense of failure because I gave up on a good tech career, or some internalized capitalist principal that asking for help is somehow bad similar to the stigma around panhandling.

kris,
@kris@outmo.de avatar

@sam hmm, maybe it's the thought that getting help from a total stranger online is for sure a one sided thing? If it is someone you know in real-life it is easier to uphold the self-illusion that you will repay it someway or another? Not sure, but I have wondered myself about a certain reluctance of mine to ask for donations online.

blake, to random

I'm considering starting a new project (yes, I know), an External Component that is a full MIX implementation -- particularly including MIX-MUC, crucial for backwards compatibility.

At this point I'd only do it with a sponsorship or grant or some such. I don't want to take on the responsibility and sacrifice my free time for it just for it to blow up in my face, I'd much rather have some support structure in place.

kris,
@kris@outmo.de avatar

@blake You could create a project on OpenCollective under the XSF as a fiscal host: https://opencollective.com/xmpp and see if people are interested in donating for it. But MIX is probably a dead-end with little support and seemingly interest by XMPP clients.

Nice to see Franzo live-streaming games again, and thanks to @cobito for hosting a instance. The only thing that is missing is direct access for linking the live chat via see: https://gitlab.com/refrac/obs-matterbridge-overlay/-/blob/master/documentation/peertube.md#matterbridge

kris,
@kris@outmo.de avatar

@cobito @opensourcegaming But I am looking into this tutorial right now which might be a bit simpler than enabling full XMPP federation: https://gitlab.com/refrac/obs-matterbridge-overlay/-/blob/master/documentation/peertube.md

kris,
@kris@outmo.de avatar

@cobito @opensourcegaming The plan is to use a regular XMPP connection to bridge the chat with Matterbridge. It needs some additional configuration to allow external XMPP servers to connect to the one built into Peertube for the live-chat, see: https://livingston.frama.io/peertube-plugin-livechat/documentation/admin/advanced/xmpp_clients/

Is there a way to remove an inactive mod from a lemmy community I am a mod of?

kris,
@kris@outmo.de avatar

@liaizon In the standard lemmy-UI you need to find a post of that inactive mod in the same community, which is a bit annoying. With the alternative Photon UI each community has a "team" tab in the community settings where you can add and remove mods.

However note that there is currently a bug in Lemmy that prevents you from doing such actions if your account is not on the same instance as the community you moderate.

I ask, because I was very disappointed by restaurant in the other day. was OK, but they do not accept . In fact, the waiter took my money and they paid my bill using their card. Maybe Taler could be used for that use case in the future?

kris,

@debacle Hmm, maybe? I think the payment backend needs to be online, but some pre-generated Taler tokens could very well be downloaded to a chip-card if there is sufficient storage on it? But I am not deeply into the technical side of it.

kris,
@kris@outmo.de avatar

kris,
@kris@outmo.de avatar

kris,
@kris@outmo.de avatar
