mojala,
@mojala@mastodon.online avatar

Big facts from The Invisibles by Grant Morrison

mojala,
@mojala@mastodon.online avatar

@mrcompletely pretty hard hitting series all the way.

mojala,
@mojala@mastodon.online avatar

@mrcompletely Fun fact, i came across invisibles only after Matrix and esp. Animatrix. I was vaguely aware that invisibles was an influence / reference point. But holy hell did it blow my brains when I read it. I’ve been looking forward to finding something with similar punch but somehow invisibles went thru all blocks and guards.

mojala,
@mojala@mastodon.online avatar

@mrcompletely “Ah, I feel a sadness on me, Dane. That's how the Irish people say it. In their language, you can't say, "I am sad," or "I am happy". They understood what we English have long forgot. We're not our sadness. We're not our happiness or our pain but our language hypnotizes us and traps us in little labelled boxes.” Can’t find the page rn but this I’ve kept with me ever since coming across it.

mojala,
@mojala@mastodon.online avatar

@mrcompletely It also ties into to the dichotomy presented in Babylon 5 ( who are you / what do you want ). I’m not that big on actual magical bollocks but I do feel that there is a level of truth that oven made from these (and others) that will travel along. Esp. invisibles, the never ending quest of finding yourself. [sorry to ramble on your thread, please excuse me, still have a couple of toots coming]

@miicat_47 @rolle toisaalla käytettiin termiä "erittäin heikkotasoinen opiskelija". Mä en oo ihan sinut sen kanssa, että joka paikassa pitää laittaa ihmiset mittaan. @fulelo It will be interesting to see if this really is the end of Orban. I’m pretty sure most Hungarians are quite happy with him even if he protects child molestors. Right wing ideology dictates that if you are weak enough to be taken advantage of, then you deserve the violence. This is something Hungarians and right wingers everywhere subscribe to. How many non right wingers in Hungary? 5%? Is it enough to effect change?

We have talked a lot about the positive sides of the Fediverse, but not as much about the downsides. For me the top negative things of this free and healthier social web are:

  1. People are patronizing. This happens a lot more than in other places. I mostly mean the unsolicited advice: Alt text, don’t post this or that, avoid commercialism, other social medias and use content warnings for everything. While many mean good, it has been often very aggressive. This happened a lot in 2022. For a while it made the bar to post much higher because I was afraid to make a mistake. Today I don’t care as much.

  2. Nitpicking. Comments are nice, but not when people are overly criticising about what you do or concentrating in irrelevancies. Whataboutism is the worst side effect.

  3. Everyone has their own rules and they are often contradicting each other. Some are extreme and block every other instance, some more allowing. You might accidentally break many rules around the Fediverse without even noticing it (some servers don’t allow posts about meat or alcohol for example).

  4. Politically too left. It seems it is not allowed to be very conservative here. People are anti-commercialism, anti-capitalist, anti-anything.

While saying this, I do not stumble upon these downsides very often since I am quite a chill guy and have my own server. I feel like I can post whatever the fuck I want.

However, I do wonder if these things are the ones that make the Fediverse less approachable by new users. On the other hand I believe the new open social web will transform the way we see the social media in general and soon it does not matter, we don’t have to think what is ”here” when the big players like Threads and Tumblr adapt ActivityPub.

Things may seem bleak sometimes with how many things are wrong in the world

But keep in mind that we're doing better than we've ever been in human history, and the fact we have time and space to report and work on those bleak things, shows how much we're improving every single day

I would be more worried if we couldn't name anything in the world to improve upon

Don't worry too much, enjoy what's here, most or all of these bleak things will go away some day, because we're working on them today

mojala,

@pthane @anthropy And again, there is no “we” - few will win on the expense of the many without there being a strict need to do so - just perverse incentives and lack of vision for the whole system. Mind you I’m not at all certain that I’m not a part of the problem - in all probability me and mine are net negative. Regardless I will do what I can to better me and mine’s lot in life. With the least external damage. But some damage will be done.
