In case you're trying to test the UNDO situation yourself, note that this apparently is dependent on a variety of variables. The rollout status of Gmail. Browser version. System type. Maybe more. So some may still see Undo, others may not. And this could change.

For reference, here's what my Gmail text input right-click context menu looks like currently on an Ubuntu desktop. Obviously, Undo has gone missing, replaced with "Help me write".

Totally get that AI has some decent specific use cases. But can't shake the feeling it's being hyped like 3D TV.

Ridiculous the way companies are trying to shove this on everyone when it's a hot mess.

Just to make nVidia shareholders rich? 🤔

@dansup @pixelfed I'm old school and don't like the overall UI push to more whitespace/vertical spacing. This is minor but still, tend to prefer tags that are different color so they stand out. But also realize that's not fully accessible. Buttons certainly make tag navigation more likely. So on fence 😂

@lauren Nobody is going to pay for Alexa. They could add it to Prime, but they just increased that price. How in the world are they burning $10 BILLION. Basic home automation, timers, and the weather. Not subscription worthy.

My non tech savvy neighbor has his dell get fried and it was too old to be worth repairing. He replaced it with some new HP computer and printer.

He thought would make setup easy.

Friends, it was not. Pretty sure I turned down at least 10 SaaS offers and had to create a new email address just to get past the Microsoft registration screen.

I couldn't quite make him understand too that he's going to have to pay 70 bucks a year to use Microsoft word.

I feel like throwing some rocks right now

mspsadmin,

@ryansingel a@a.com is your friend. Enter that email address and some random password when prompted to create/login to Microsoft. You get an error and you can create a local account 👍
Works when they lock your screen begging you to create an account as well.

I'm still trying to figure out Threads. I mean, ok become the new Twitter and eventually introduce ads. But still, compared to FB, Threads is tiny. For a lot of people Threads is a really neat space right now. Like all platforms, that can change in a hurry. But the Fediverse is a completely different animal. They have enough smart people to know if they FA the instance admins will help them FO. So what's the real end game? I can't say with conviction it HAS to be evil. But..

mspsadmin,
@mspsadmin@msps.io avatar

@Viss @jerry @pivot
I'm well aware of their previous behavior. Facebook/Meta is a dumpster fire. That's the point of my previous post. Exactly what are they going to 'gain' by federating Threads that they couldn't already get if they wanted. It's not like the Fediverse is Signal. What does federating get them to be evil, vs expanding the reach of Threads. I'm not sure anyone really knows.

mspsadmin,
@mspsadmin@msps.io avatar

@Viss @jerry @monkeyflower @pivot
Agree 💯 with this. Nobody thinks they're being altruistic, but I'm not sure anyone really knows the end game.

mspsadmin,
@mspsadmin@msps.io avatar

@Viss @pivot @jerry
Ok, fair point. But exactly how do they murder the Fediverse? Isn't the whole point that the Fediverse is broad enough with enough local control that Threads just end up blocked by everyone if they start acting shady?

I don't know why disabled auto funding for purchases. It made it such a useful account. If clients paid via PayPal - great. Use that money. If the account zeroed out, grab from the backup payment methods/accounts. You had a central place to track everything, heavily secured by 2FA. They've really ruined the experience for many with this. I'm not manually putting money in with a 3-4 day wait time. We'll just gradually stop using PayPal. It's a shame. Banks suck.

mspsadmin,
@mspsadmin@msps.io avatar

We use for in person transactions, & that's great. Except Square blocks a lot of debit card uses. It's like having a nanny reviewing every purchase. Hell no. Plus their weird 'pull the fee out first' method of accounting is a PITA financially. So it remains mainly our credit card terminal. Business is a joke. The fact I have to pay $ to move money from Venmo to PayPal is... insane. Honestly, it's really getting ridiculous how often you have to pay X% to move your own money around.

mspsadmin,
@mspsadmin@msps.io avatar

I just want an online bank account with excellent security, reasonable credit card fees, and not taking another cut every time I need to move money. PayPal was SO close - now they've wrecked it.

Got SSH logins working natively in Windows Terminal. Pretty slick vs depending on and Remote Desktop Manager (slow) But still think processes are... Unclear. So, when you create the key, it requires a Yubikey PIN. But when you use it to login, the PIN isn't needed. Guessing it's a setting somewhere. Why wouldn't you require the PIN - because the key pointer file is required (2nd factor)?

This is going to be interesting... Client got delivery failures from a phishing email sent via their account. trace shows it. Acct secure - no outside access. 2FA active. Email headers indicate it was proxied from another tenant. They even CCed themselves to monitor delivery. Custom proxy headers I've never seen before (4 hops). Can't wait to hear the take on it.

The Associated Press just served me an ad for fake anti-virus. The entire page was taken over, and forwarded to the malicious site, within seconds of opening the news article, every time.

An ad blocker isn't just something to hide some annoying eyesores, it's a vital layer of security.

If you have friends or family who might fall for fake AV or "windows technical the department" scams, they need an ad blocker. No site they visit can be considered "safe" unless it simply doesn't have ads.

mspsadmin,
@mspsadmin@msps.io avatar

@r000t I've encountered that ad as well a week ago (usually integrated app browsers) Crazy they haven't fixed it.

Of course I have clients still clicking the first Amazon link they get when searching Amazon on Google and they end up at a MS Support Scam site. If Google still can't prevent malicious ads 🤷‍♂️

Ad blockers definitely are a solid security layer.

If you've ever wondered about and , this was a very in depth look.

https://www.yubico.com/blog/a-yubico-faq-about-passkeys/

I see lots of benefits, but also some risk. The rush to make logins easier, seems to be lowering the security bar. Storing passkeys in makes me a bit nervous because it seems to rely on a single authentication. Just using a password out of 1PW still needed 2FA if I didn't mark the device trusted. For some services, I never store trust. 2FA always.

I cannot describe how far the accuracy of Google search results has fallen into the gutter.

You would search for a term and get news coverage of that topic.

Now, you get at best 2 articles, while the rest is VPN blogs, two random tweets, and a bunch of forums and blog posts that casually mention the search terms ONCE with no relation to the phrase/context in which they were shared.

I'm honestly thinking of ditching Google for Bing or DDG at this point.

Yes, it's literally THAT BAD!

mspsadmin,
@mspsadmin@msps.io avatar

@campuscodi I switched to DDG and it's been ok. Bing is still Bing... It's just not there, though the latest card setup with color tiles for site sections and layered answers has potential. I've even noticed spellcheck has gotten worse. Simple typos and it has no clue anymore. Have to manually fix so many.

Serious question: dealing with L1 support at a lot of cloud vendors is comically bad, like "This API endpoint works (api-url1), this other one (api-url2) you document (help-url) throws a does not exist error, what's up?" and they reply with "the (help-url) works, try using a mobile client or a different computer"

Like... You can (should?) be replaced with an AI script that at least reads the email....

And I get it, people have to start somewhere and L1 is a good place to start, but if they don't even read the tickets properly before replying....

gah.
