@nanode@social.consummatetinkerer.net

Currently tinkering with stuff on the sunny South Coast of the UK.

By day I am one of those people that 'does something with computers', usually around data visualisation.

By night I'm usually wandering around #NoMansSky or #ElderScrollsOnline building stupid stuff in both.

(Also I've recently started having fun in #NightCity in #Cyberpunk2077 whilst patiently waiting for #DeadSpace to come on sale.)

#EFF and #ORG supporter.

Been using #PGP since 2000 and no-one has ever mailed me.

Thanks to scripting wizardry, posts now vanish into the ether after 10 days a weird amount of time.

So, I went to the in Brighton last weekend to see

Here's my insightful review:

You know how wildlife filmmakers have a policy of not getting involved and just documenting what is happening in front of them?

It's 1h 49m of someone telling you that but about war journalism.

nanode,

@luciedigitalni

hmmm, I can't say I'd have been gutted if I'd missed watching it at the cinema.

It is a good production with great performances.

It's just the story is a bit meh!

nanode, to random

Well, this looks fucking awesome:

"A cast of amazing women and non-binary people will deliver performances, tell stories and perform stunts with a sense of danger and intrigue, resulting in a truly memorable theatrical experience. All womxn aerialists, wrestlers, illusionists, glass walkers, drag kings, contemporary clowns, whip crackers, sword climbers, sideshow performers, variety dancers, contortionists, unicyclists, extraordinary performance artists, storytellers, hula-hoopers and hair hangers invite you to witness all new spectacular matriarchal utopias."

So, if Hunt thinks £100k isn't a huge salary, let's see him adjust the minimum wage accordingly, eh?

nanode,

@fkamiah17

Looks like he's wrong on the median wage for his own constituency too; it's more like £45K which admittedly is higher than the rest of the South East but still nowhere near £100K:

Finally, finally got my server set up.

The hardest part?

Getting the App on my telly's menu.

And the hardest part of that?

Getting the telly into Developer Mode.

Thanks Samsung for making a Menu that doesn't accept input from its own remote control.

nanode,

@coldclimate

oh, for the record, using the TV Internet App, and connecting it to the server IP worked absolutely perfectly, I just wanted a Menu item, which has inadvertently opened up a world of 'what other nonsense can I do with the telly' ?

Here's an idea: stop starting so many fucking wars.

nanode,

@Greenseer @fkamiah17

I read that many years ago on a whimsical buy (I liked the handwritten note by the bookshop reviewer).

It's such a good book!

10/10 would recommend.

😆

nanode,

@fkamiah17 @Greenseer

Ooh, ta.

More to add to the pile.

🙂

I'm slowly reading 'Ducks' by Kate Beaton at the mo.

Slowly, because I really want to absorb every frame (it's a graphic novel and was one of Obama's recommendations).

nanode,

@fkamiah17 @Greenseer

Ta!

There was a Kickstarter a few years back for 'True War Stories' which was a collection of stories from Vietnam up to the present day.

Stories from the soldiers perspective.

Also, "Waltz with Bashir" both the film and subsequent graphic novel are worth looking at but be warned it's gut wrenching.

nanode,

@fkamiah17 @Greenseer

The film came first.

I saw it at the pictures, and, well, let's just say I'll never forget it.

nanode,

@fkamiah17 @Greenseer

But definitely a film you should watch.

We interrupt this broadcast for some news. I looked for less than a minute. And this is what I found.
She was expelled for liking three tweets; one criticising Christian Wakeford (former Tory), one about nationalising Centrica, and one calling for a living wage of £15.
That's "inimical to the aims of the Labour party". 😡

nanode,

@fkamiah17

When we had the recent Council elections (last Summer maybe?) the Labour candidate popped by to cavas my support.

He wasn't very happy with my response, that I would never vote for a party, at any level, that had such an apathetic, dreary, spineless, conviction free, non entity at its head.

He left after muttering something about flower beds and bicycle racks.

Luckily it's a bastion of Green around here and I can't see that changing even when Caroline departs.

A kiddie version of an NI number, with the added benefit of:

"allowing governments to harness artificial intelligence and data-mining to improve standards, according to the shadow education secretary"

What could possibly go wrong?

ArtBear, (edited ) to fediverse

So, with there being so many, should we collectively refer to all the different forks of etc as

?😂

A partial list here
https://codeberg.org/fediverse/delightful-fediverse-apps/issues/47

nanode,

@ArtBear

The collective term should obviously be 'handles'.

As in fork-handles.

(I'll get my coat.)

Every year, on Boxing Day, in near the local Hunt holds a procession through the streets.

Nothing unusual about this, they've been doing it for years; it's Tradition.

However, this year the road closure that the Hunt applied for was refused.

So, 'Action Against Fox Hunting' applied for a road closure to hold a wheelbarrow race, to raise money for a foodbank.

Permission granted.

When I'm talking about project sustainability, I'm talking about more than developers by the way.

I don't code in C which at the moment is what @librecast is written in. But I still contribute time, with grant applications, reporting, managing the project account, community etc.

This isn't directly funded. It's a similar story for folks in other projects who give that support, their time for gratis. What happens when their cash runs out, the project loses.

nanode,

@onepict

There was a post here a while back that called this kind of role a 'glue job'.

Every project needs some glue.

😀

nanode,

@onepict @marshant

Oh, I agree with you and wasn't attempting to diminish the value that these roles play.

Maybe I've been lucky but in some places I've worked, 'soft skills' were developed alongside more formal training.

Just as not everyone can code, not everyone can document, or facilitate, or manage conflict, or whatever.

Everyone brings something to the table.

Maybe it is a minority view (that I think we share) but I feel that all of these skills form part of a properly functioning whole.

(But you are right, that git repo graph has a lot to answer for. 😆)

I'm currently thinking of setting up my own mail server as Gmail is one of the last pieces of Google I use.

I know it's a complicated process but I also know my brain will drive me down this path as soon as I have a spare few days to wrap my head around it all.

Controversial I know but I enjoyed the first film more; I think it was the shock of hearing Daniel Craig's Southern gentleman drawl.

    Jesus Fucking Christ, I swear these get bigger and more elaborate every year.

    It's become a competition now; I can imagine a meeting in a village hall, discussing the upcoming display and how to better the one planned for Barton in Cockwomble.

    (There were never any crocheted angel wings on the church wall when I were a little 'un, I blame Corbyn.)

    the other day i was talking to someone and they were like "why do you need all those 1/4" jack cables? i connect all my music equipment together using bluetooth" and i was like. what does that even mean. i can see that it would be possible, i know that such products exist. but how the hell would that be remotely good. i couldn't even properly convey my bewilderment at the idea. i'm still mentally processing it. i hope it was a joke
