Is anyone else having issues with images loading on Mastodon? I'm seeing a bunch of profile pics, header images, uploads and article previews as either blank or blurred placeholders. This used to only happen on the web interface, but it's now happening on the app also. I've tried using mobile data to rule out my pihole causing problems.

Did you that calDAV has a journal feature? I use it to keep meeting notes stored alongside my calendar; no need to go hunting for notes when you can just click on the date the meeting took place in your email / calendar client! I've been using KDE's Kontact for this on my GNU/Linux PC, and I just discovered @jtx for Android which I use alongside @davx5app.

Seitan Roast
I made this roast today and we really enjoyed it. Unfortunately I don't have any pink peppercorns so I used black tellicherry. It has an unusual soft, though not spongy or mushy texture, which we really liked.
Served with roasted halved garlic head, roasted onion quarters, some red quinoa, roasted parsnips and a pile of greens, peas and finely chopped kale.

nathanu,

@EllieK @wfpb @vegan the texture of that seitan looks great!

@OohDirectory I submitted my blog many months ago. I'm not sure if it was just rejected because it didn't make the cut (which is fine - I wouldn't be offended), or if it was simply because I didn't have many posts at the time. Is there a way to know or resubmit in the case of the latter? Or should I just accept my lot? 😅

I read a really good article some time ago explaining NTP and mapping the various orgs and facilities involved; I can't find it now. Does anyone know the article I mean?

Sourdough rye bread

It might not be pretty (it isn't), but it's pretty delicious!

The other day, I bought a loaf of 100% rye bread and paid $13 for it. So I'm back to baking my own:
My 12 year old Sourdough culture: made with 50% spelt 50%rye

Dough: 100% whole wheat spelt 26%; 100% rye 74%
Cooked rye, oat & spelt berries
Sunflower seeds

nathanu,

@EllieK @wfpb @vegan I bet this would be amazing toasted with lashings of Miyoko's vegan butter and a touch of salt.

Good day all! I'm pretty busy just at the moment, but I thought audiophiles (as well as regular people) would find this an interesting read or listen. Steven told me about it.
"He spent his life building a $1 million stereo. The real cost was unfathomable.
Ken Fritz turned his home into an audiophile’s dream — the world’s greatest hi-fi. What would it mean in the end?"

  • nathanu,

@erosdiscordia So, to install Yunohost, you start with Debian (11, I think) and then you run a script to turn it into a Yunohost install. I imagine you could dual boot if you wanted to, but I'd be surprised if this was a supported use case. After running that script, you're supposed to do just about any system admin via the yunohost command, or the webadmin. For anything outside of that, you're in uncharted waters and the support forum is very hit or miss.

Yet another great Monday-morning shave, with Yazu/Rose/Patchouli and the spectacularly good Superslant

This Plisson European Gray badger shaving brush was a gift from The Wife, who bought it on the recommendation of the last Master Barber in Paris. He was right, although at the time I was hypnotized by silvertip badger and failed to realize what an excellent brush it is. Over the years, I have come to appreciate it more and more, and this morning I greatly enjoyed the…

@Leisureguy Do you have a list published anywhere of good vegan shaving soaps or companies that make them? The one I usually buy is often out and alternatives are so hit and miss.

Poison expert allegedly poisoned wife—with a shockingly toxic gout drug

Colchicine is centuries old, but the line between toxic and nontoxic is still blurry.

    nathanu,

@arstechnica This is a terrible, sad story, but I can't help but have a small chuckle at what an absolute muppet this man is:

"He also allegedly searched for things like 'internet browsing history: can it be used in court?' and 'delete amazon data police.' He tried using a VPN but initially mistyped it as 'bpn.'"

I decided to look at a few quick ways to improve the security of a system compared to the baseline most distros provide.

They generally have to strike a balance between usability and security, which means that, depending on your own use case, there are some steps you might want to take to increase how secure your own install is. So, here are a few quick tips I find useful for my own servers and desktops:

    https://youtu.be/dSBhMzDkQ24

    nathanu,

@thelinuxEXP Great video! This is a topic I'm quite interested in; would love to see more. I might investigate how to set up AppArmor on my EndeavourOS system soon.

One thing I really don't understand: Why is it that people sometimes get upset when they make a statement to you, and you know differently, so you offer contradictory evidence (in a kind, normal way). This has happened twice today. I feel as though when I'm in their shoes, I'm intrigued or grateful to learn something new?

@gratefuldread but why would you, knowing that they fund opposition to LGBTQIA+ rights?

    nathanu,

@gratefuldread I hear you, but I hope you'll consider that a percentage of any revenue directed towards the company as a result of sharing that article will be used to oppress people like us. For this reason, I believe that offering that company any publicity whatsoever likely causes more harm than good.

    nathanu,

@gratefuldread I apologize; I was only trying to offer my perspective as as someone affected by this issue, and as your reader, on your public post. I'll refrain from commenting again now that I know it's not welcome.

    nathanu,

@gratefuldread I am calm, just responding to the "unsolicited response" piece. I know some people don't like to receive comments from people they don't know and I will respect that now that I'm aware that this is the case for you. Again, apologies.

    Let me be honest

The average Windows and Apple user has no interest in learning the terminal. That is because they have no incentive to do so. They come from a world where everything is point and click easy, without much effort or fuss. You could be a speed typist and advanced Linux user, and still not keep up the ease and speed of a mouse.

Do not even bother arguing the advantage of privacy. Google is the #1 search engine and so is Google Chrome. People know it is evil and still use it.

    1/3

    nathanu,

@Linux_Is_Best hard agree. I wish packagekit compatibility was a priority for pacman for this reason; I can't fully build the Arch system I want without it, but any time you bring this up, people assume you don't know how to use the terminal / haven't read the wiki, etc. It's not that I don't know what I'm doing, it's simply that a more usable system is more pleasant to use, no matter how skilled you are.
