You can kind of use Back to the Future to perceive technology supercycles.

BTTF’s magic sense of vertigo is its juxtaposition of 1985 vs 1955. The time periods feel so different: sprawl has yet to take over. Everything is a little small and quaint. Culture is very different, from race and integration, to architecture, music, dress.

If you used tried the same difference between 2024 and 1994, it’s not going to ring with the same resonance.

You know what’s awesome? Every time I use my 1970s Hi-Fi stuff I just turn it on and it works.

There’s no updates to download and install, no notifications to swipe away and no Bluetooth that needs reconnecting.

oli_jens,
@oli_jens@hachyderm.io avatar

@thomasfuchs it’s really sad that high quality equipment doesn’t make financial sense because everything needs to be collecting data or have a subscription just to make financial sense for companies today. High quality physical goods = slow growth = market punishment.

Whilst putting my phone, watch, tablet and powerbank on charge yesterday evening, I glanced outside at my car, still charging, having been slowly pulling 8A for ~14 hours.

Between 150 and 20 years ago, there was some amazing future-looking fiction written, accurately predicting all sorts of stuff; handheld computers, smart watches, the Internet, satellites, electric cars even.

But I never read anything about how much of our lives would revolve around charging batteries in almost every device.

oli_jens,
@oli_jens@hachyderm.io avatar

@bloor I guess it’s because nobody imagined that batteries could’ve powered everything. Back in the days, most people used only 9v, AA and AAA batteries, hard to extrapolate that as a power source for a car (or a boat!). Batteries really have come a long way.

A 🌋 eruption in 🇮🇸 might be imminent. This looks serious.

👉🏾 Iceland declares state of emergency, evacuates residents over threat of volcanic eruption https://www.cnn.com/2023/11/11/europe/iceland-emergency-evacuates-threat-volcanic-eruption-intl-hnk/index.html

oli_jens,
@oli_jens@hachyderm.io avatar

@darnell @Tattooed_mummy the nearby town of Grindavik has been evacuated and nobody is in danger, thankfully. Now the whole country is holding their breath to see how big this eruption will be. Best case scenario, small eruption with limited infrastructure damage. Worst case, the town is gone. Also bad, if it’s an underwater eruption - that means lots of ash.

SwiftOnSecurity, to random

UX designers who eliminated the filesystem from user consciousness in name of simplicity ruined the world and are morally culpable for shriveling minds of children who are unable to tackle the challenges of today thanks to a choice sold as advocacy for the user but was ultimately motivated by control of a disempowered customer.

oli_jens,
@oli_jens@hachyderm.io avatar

@SwiftOnSecurity does it matter that much? Abstractions are always happening and there’s always people that think each one is a step too far (eg LLMs, infra as a service) while many others see the benefits and exploit them immediately. If you need to know how a file system works, you can learn. Same as with if a service on AWS doesn’t fit your needs, you can learn to roll your own.

This sucks, like, a lot. And to have it presented as a fair accomplit, without seeking any sort of community input, is frustrating.

I'll wait to see how they reply to the visceral responses they're getting, because they've had very reasonable follow-ups to significant issues in the past, but if this isn't resolved to my satisfaction, I'll have to stop my monthly contribution and move servers. https://hachyderm.io/@nivenly/110793389840249184

@danhulton I'm confused. This is a free/libre community led project about democratizing access to generative AI. Sounds like a best case scenario? Unless you oppose generative AI, I suppose?

Pretty happy with how this story turned out. Steve Huffman should immediately step down and hand over the reins to someone even marginally more competent than he is.

Make sure to read all the way through to the “9to5Mac's Take" at the bottom.

"Reddit's CEO really wants you to know that he doesn't care about your feedback” https://9to5mac.com/2023/06/15/reddit-blackout-third-party-apps/

@ChanceHMiller I don’t think he woke up on a random Tuesday with a vendetta against Apollo - I think he’s under enormous external pressure to cut off 3rd party apps and monetize the API somehow.

It seems many people still aren’t aware that they literally don’t have to see any cookie / GDPR / consent popups — at least not in their desktop browser. Get uBlock Origin and then in the settings there’s a bunch of filter lists to choose from. “EasyList annoyances” alone will block like 99% of them, and it just works. Only downside is that it’s pretty much impossible to use a browser without it after.
