bsky.brid.gy: Opt-out bridge for Bluesky that will be live as soon as the main (and only) Bluesky instance enables AT-protocol federation.

@snarfed: No service should be opt-out. Bluesky is known to platform Nazis without remorse. Nazis aren't welcome on the Fediverse.

orsinov,

@julia @snarfed agree with the block, disagree with "no service should be opt out"

eepy.moe is opt-out too, as is any fedi server, so that makes no sense to me.
anyway, it doesn't matter, thank you for bringing this to my attention!

the reason to use a client-side app framework is to center app logic on client devices, to have the user’s device do the user’s work. any other gains are illusory

orsinov,

@garbados
Honestly, i don't buy it

client side frameworks are mostly about coding nested widgets with short-lived state

Bandwidth doesn't grow on trees especially if you are on mobile or in a nation with bad internet

why resend the entire page 1000 times

  • ofc if you are coding a news website, i mean hell, why are you not just statically rendering that thing
orsinov,

@garbados
But you honestly cant tell me that you can decelop a usable appealing capital a App in php.

and that html/jquery is a utopia of perfect state managment

orsinov,

@garbados
I guess the use case is extremely imoortant for this discussion - hm.

I guess u think a site like reddit or cnn has no buisness using react -at least in their original concipation.

Meanwhile it would not make sense for discord to be static html
That would be unusable.
Instead it is a versioned js blob, that has to be reloaded sometimes, sure - but there are many many views where the content is uodating in real time, the site is a complex mess of stateful widgets, your own mute preferences etc, and so on

The React project i'm currently working on also has a lot of tables and graphs with little tooltips and expandable forms designed for maximum ease of use, and our components are used accross 4 teams

So yeah it surely makes the most sense for our product as well i feel like.
Because it wouldve been java desktop app 20 years ago

monetary gain on a video hosting platform does not incentivize creators to make good content, in fact, it heavily incentivizes quantity over quality; which is bad.

orsinov,

@root Though it does also pay people for their work, so that they can make a living

I'm not a fan of Mr. Beast (666), but i do like a lot of video essayists, reviewers, filmmakers and animators on the platform

It wouldn't be possible without the monetization.

Personally i whish that - similar to coin, there was ab easy anonymous way to pay people, still using a centralized authority.

The fact that you have to use banks or payment processers who log your transactions and are responisble for chargeback issues etc etc is really complicating things and probably the main reason journalism online is fucking dying

Because the only viable model currently is getting people to subscribe monthly

Noone is signing up with their bank details to pay 20cent for a single article

Same with any other kind of online content

absolutely baffled that after putting up with steam's utter bullshit for a decade, the way youtube's algorithm works feels downright meritocratic

like, i know what the metrics for a successful video are and i can work towards refining them in my videos, and YT doesn't expect me to have built a preexisting fanbase before launch (whereas that's literally the only way to succeed on steam) and in fact from what i can tell YT doesn't seem to care much at all about what views i bring from outside the platform

orsinov,

@eniko
To be fair, i got reccomended your 2d youtube video organically
And watched quite a bit of it

Idk Steam seems like it has less plays or purchases to play with and distribute through reccomendation
It's tough competiton

So yeah i think marketing and publishing is a big thing in that space
Drumming uo publicity on youtube is a rpute quite a few people havw taken

@SallyStrange@eldritch.cafe avatar

My summary of the pro-federation camp's arguments:
-not every FB user is bad
-more is better
-the fediverse could draw people away from threads
-this represents an opportunity for innovation
-porting an account between instances is hard

These aren't unreasonable arguments on the face of it. However, the consistent flaw is that the people presenting these arguments studiously avoid mentioning any of the real reasons the anti-federation camp are opposed, to wit:

-FB's documented history of enabling genocide
-the obvious fact that since they allow e.g. Libs of Tik Tok on Threads, it is already in violation of most "good" instances' terms of service
-FB's documented current practices of abusing workers in lieu of doing actual moderation
-FB's documented history of doing unethical experiments on their users
-FB's documented history of of enabling illegal (in the USA!) racial and religious discrimination

The one thing that the pro-federation camp WILL mention is the concern over EEE (Embrace, Extend, Extinguish), but I've never seen a reasonable explanation for why this is a scenario we shouldn't fear. It's just handwaving.

The pro-federation camp has also repeatedly tried to dishonestly frame the possibility of an admin making an instance block decision with which their users disagree as an example of tyranny. This, I believe, is because "porting instances is hard" is a wack-ass argument and they know it; thus they must catastrophize it and make it sound worse than it is.

So, overall, I've tried to keep an open mind towards the enthusiasts, but the more I listen to them, the less impressed I become. Over several months, none of them (that I've interacted with) have acknowledged, without prompting, that people who aren't straight and cis and Christian and white and able-bodied and moderate/liberal/conservative have a different set of risks to consider than those who are.

And that's the irritating part. Because we're RIGHT FUCKING HERE, we're your mutuals in many cases! We're doing our best to tell y'all what OUR experiences with Mark Zuckerberg's company have been like. The information is there. Thus, we can observe that you remain ignorant out of callousness and carelessness, or you are deliberately lying about our motivations. Really, one or the other, it doesn't matter: both options mean you suck.

Please suck less, .

orsinov,

@SallyStrange
I know all these things about facebook

But my irl friends are there.

Fb is bad. That's why it would be a good idea to conveyer belt the peoples souls out of it and into the wider fediverse.

I feel it makes sense to block threads on many instances, to protect users

Even though that lessens your exposure

But on gateway instances the, you can conveyer belt people out of threads - from the gateway instances people can for the first time see the diverse userbase behind fedipact etc

Meaning that those geteways will have the most diverse content available

Maybe people will stay on those maybe they eill move further into fedi and away from the mainstream.

When fedi becomes an actual challenger through it's growth- we can hope that it has the critical mass to not be cuttable.
Especially, if people on threads and tumblr would interact.
Big commercial instances that can't cut each other off, like in email.

And then, the final hopr:
That whatever happens, we, the fedi enthusiasts, will stay together despite everything FB pulls to break us apart.
And maybe! Just maybe!
The EU will make Fedi a mandatory condition!
Like they are doing with messenger apps.

I have big dreams to destroy facebook. They are perhaps delusional, but ifeel it's valid to try.

Because as of now, the MAJORITY of the MINORITIES you speak off, are still caught in the crossfire on Fbs networks

orsinov,

@SallyStrange i genuinely find that idea compelling
What do you think?

I still think it makes sense for you to block threads, but i want to recruit my memeing friends
And i think that would only work, by being a gsteway or pointing then to gateways

Can't blame people for not going to theraoy when the amount of healthcare-therapists is limited by the council of healthcare providers

Like there are just not enough therapists, and paying medical expenses out of pocket is just prohibitively expensive.
Even when more therapists graduate, the amount of "Kassenplätze" meaning the amount of therapists covered by insurance
Still doesnt grow

And young therapists usually sell their soul to get one of these seats

Because if one was really seeking answers, you'd go to the source.

orsinov,

@Are0h
Honestly, i think if thebadspace was more transparently a restrictive abd exclusionary blocklist

Whose core tradeoff is
Ensuring that there is absolutely no room for harrassment
Whilst sacrificing availability of a substantial amount of the networks content
Of which the vast majority doesn't engage in and usually actively fights harrassment
People who are isolated from participating servers and can then only talk to themselves and actual nazis who are blocked alongside them
Being marginalized and exposed to your oppressors is pretty bad

The current lists tradeoffs makes little sense for the majority of servers - but it definetely does for some.
Oliphants tier system is definetely a step up tbh

I also feel like many people feel accused by their listing on it

If you communicated more clearly that their server doesn't meet the strict moderation standards - and is blocked because selective individuals, mod-adjacent people etc have misbehaved before

Then you kind of assuade this feeling of being wrongfully banned

Personally, if i installed your blocklist, i'd loose too much
An empty network is useless, even if it is harrassment free, by virtue of not allowing most connections.
There is a reason why Data Security and Integrity are always weighed against Availability

The narrative that everyone blocked is complicit anyway - because they signed up on a server where moderation problems have recently arisen, or where mods have turned out to be shady due to recent statements...
Is just an excuse for unfocused countermeasures if i'm honest

Your work was and is very important, especially since the idea of coordinated anti-harrassment wasn't a thing previously

But personally i'm not a fan of you completly dismissing side effects of your actions
It'd be fine if you acknowledge and accept it tbh

And if you left servers with a path forward to be delisted if they comply with certain moderation actions
You'd have a more lasting impact

I don't know
But this feels very unfortunate

If you're wondering how to stop seeing the same boosts again and again, there is a feature built into Mastodon called "Group Boosts" which prevents you seeing the same boost twice. This is switched on automatically for everyone, you do not need to do anything to switch it on.

Unfortunately, it is also set to allow boosts to repeat after 40 other posts, and this number cannot be adjusted by users or admins.

If you're comfortable using github, vote for this to be fixed at https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/18693

orsinov,

@feditips
Honestly you should not signal boost github issuesy at least not to tell people to "vote"

Full text search is a vector for spam and harassment and apparently it's being implemented anyway, but opt-in. Except that I can't opt out because nobody seems to think this merits its own option. I want my account to be recommended to others. I want search engines to be able to index my posts. I DON'T want to opt in to full text search for other fediverse users. These are 3 different options, they should have 3 different toggles. Full text search should not piggyback on the other 2

EDIT: indexing by search engines is stuff like Google or DuckDuckGo. People don't generally use those to find people to spam or who's day to ruin. Full text search is within the fediverse, and people on twitter word searched for the purpose of screaming at and or insulting you all the time. I want my posts to show up on a Google search, NOT for people who are looking for an excuse to shit on people

orsinov,

@eniko @dasgrueneblatt

They aree though
If you are in someones database, all you can do is ask not to be searched for

Harassment instances have had search for a long time, but they're defederated, you know?

Idk i don't think it's too hard to proove that someone is replyguying all posts with a keyword

To report them and demand their deletion or defederate from the host server
Because on the other hand it's so hard to find people on here, initially

I doo gett the concern, and maybe it's not as easy as i think
But defederation is really the only thing you can do to prevent beingfull text searched.

Denke aber es ist eher eine abneigung gegen nationalismus generell, der leute die deutschlandflagge nur situationsabhängig schwingen lässt

keine ahnung man labert ja oft was von
