🚨 THE RESULTS ARE IN 🚨

After losing to Peter Thiel in last year’s contest, Elon Musk takes the title of WORST PERSON IN TECH 2023!

We only wish we could reward him with a one-way ticket to the sun 🚀☀️

The end of low interest rates is showing us what the tech companies really built over the past 15 years and it’s nothing like what their PR hacks once promised.

Everything is more expensive, more invasive, and far less innovative or improved than they led us to believe.

The media is obsessed with the story of Geoffrey Hinton, the “godfather of AI” who left Google to warn us about his life’s work.

Hinton isn’t worried about the immediate harms of AI and even dismisses those concerns as not “existentially serious.” But his warnings are nothing but sci-fi fantasies that distract us from real problems. For Disconnect, I argue we should ignore him.

Apple’s Vision Pro is a visionless product that only exists to placate investors and try to show the company can still innovate under Tim Cook.

The headset demonstrates just how much Apple lost its way after a decade of putting the share price above everything else.

Italy’s far-right party proposed using AI to assign youth mandatory jobs.

“The young person will no longer be able to choose whether to work or not, but [will be] bound to accept the job offer for himself (sic), for his family and for the country, under penalty of loss of all benefits.”

ChatGPT does not have “a memory.” It does not “remember” anything. OpenAI is just storing data about you and your engagement with its product.

I’m begging the media to stop repeating tech companies’ misleading framings of their products.

Meta lost $3.85 billion on the metaverse in the first quarter of 2024 alone. You know, that thing we all laughed about a couple years ago and next to no one actually uses.

It’s burned $45 billion on the metaverse since the end of 2020.

Twitter’s new X logo wasn’t made by an in-house designer. It’s from an old podcast hosted by one of the cult that Elon took from his replies.

The font is Monotype’s Special Alphabets 4. Who wants to bet Musk didn’t pay for the rights before slapping it all over the place?

For years, the media built up Elon Musk and got the public to buy into the myth of his genius. Now the truth of who he is can’t be hidden and changing how they cover Musk isn’t enough.

The media failed us. They not only need to inform the public about the harms of Musk’s empire, but change how they cover the entire tech industry so another grifter can’t replicate his rise. They owe us nothing less.

I want to believe @anildash, but I don’t see the nostalgic comparison between now and the early web.

Things are may be getting a little weirder, but the web is far more commercialized than it was then. Power shifts don’t mean redistribution, but new monopolists displacing the old.

Elon Musk started trying to build his empire somewhat legitimately, but quickly realized that hype and exaggeration were far more effective at getting investors, the media, and the wider public interested.

In part 3 of ELON MUSK UNMASKED, I dig into how he built Tesla and then used that power to start messing with other industries.

lmao, the US military keeps accidentally sending highly sensitive information to email addresses in Mali because they write .ml instead of .mil. The Dutch company managing Mali’s domain has collected 117,000 emails this year alone.

Control of Mali’s domain is about to revert to the Mali government, at which point it can collect all those emails. It’s a close ally of Russia, and could theoretically pass on information.

Nobody should be presenting Substack choosing to remove 5 Nazi publications from its platform as a win. Platformer alone says it’s reviewed dozens spreading those ideas, and really the Nazi stuff is just the tip of the iceberg.

I used to look at these kinds of statements as deceptive PR, but increasingly I see them more through the lens of faith.

The tech billionaires are true believers and don’t accept they’re misunderstanding things like intelligence because they believe themselves to be geniuses.

The AI boom requires massive data centers that consume enormous amounts of water and energy.

Tech CEOs have plans for hundreds more hyperscale facilities in the coming years, but activists around the world are fighting back to protect their communities and force us to ask who really benefits from the future Silicon Valley is building.

Kara Swisher in “Burn Book”: Travis Kalanick was so evil because he wanted to replace drivers with AI in 2014 — and I didn’t say anything about my objection at the time.
