@cstross This myth of merit is essential to the consolidation of inherited wealth and power as justified by "exceptionalism" "hard work" "luck" "great timing" "genius" "charisma" "good genes" "5th dimensional chess grandmaster", rather than the more accurate "nepobaby".

They push the myth of their own unique earned exceptionalism and erase the truth.

It's not just billionaires, it's those elected to great political power. "Name recognition."

Both Trump and JFK, Junior are nepobabies, the babies of great unearned wealth. Joe Biden is not.

Romney, McCain, W Bush, Gore, HW Bush were/are all nepobabies.

@OldAndCranky My target age at seven was 65 (I enjoyed both age 7 and age 65). My parents were older and I was a surprise baby. My parents planned to take a cruise round the world at retirement, but Dad went blind in his 50s, and it upended his plans. I grew up watching them grow old. He fought it, until he accepted it, and became more peaceful. He died at 72. Mom was always happy whenever she was, and live to 97. I still work, and I work with a cohort average age 80. I wish we worried less about what we can no longer easily do, and continued to embrace what we haven't yet done. I took up the ukulele at 60, and it's been a blast.

@BrianJopek There are idiots who idolize Musk who has a BA (not a BS) in physics and would have failed a basic undergrad course in civil engineering.
Why not hammer bent nails straight and reuse them in SpaceX?

My dad died when I was 21, so on the urging of others, I went to therapy. But being new to therapy, I asked my therapist two things:

  1. Why did you become a therapist?
  2. What is the goal of therapy?

Her first answer was instructive. She had been a young community organizer in an urban neighborhood in Chicago in economic, racial, ethnic, immigrant, religious, etc transition. She worked with mostly English speaking poor white black lung coal families from Appalachia, and was struck by how two families reacted to systemic societal oppression, and poverty. One family (with 5 kids) was dysfunctional, angry, violent, abusive, with truancy, substance issues, mostly lost, pessimistic, isolated, hopeless, and depressed. The other family had 17 kids (including a child in a wheelchair, and others with disabilities) and were equally if not more poor, but were very involved in fighting for black lung rights and anti-poverty and anti-racist issues, and were surprisingly counterintuitively happy. She wondered why. She came to believe that one family internalized their oppression (blamed themselves and each other for systemic misery) and took it out on themselves and each other; the other family recognized societal responsibility for the injustice they faced, and named it and fought it without internalizing it.

It is very hard not to internalize the lying hate directed personally to you, or the hopelessness that an overwhelming issue seems to call, but to survive and win for future generations, we must love ourselves, name the problem and fight the right source of our struggles.

A fight joined by allies is key.

MAGAs are labeling DEI as "Didn't Earn It," which is wild because in reality, generating historic wealth through 2 billion acres of stolen land from Native Americans, enslaving Black people for 300 years, banning Asian immigration until 1965, & banning women from financial access til 1974 — all without paying a single red cent in reparations or restitution — is the living breathing example not earning it.

I assume most Israelis, the vast majority of whom distrust & loathe & want him replaced, are picking up what Gantz is laying down about 's real natsec interests (i.e., maintain diplomatic respect & trust with the US –which is obviously impossible w/Bibi calling the shots).

@RickiTarr I think learning to understand both the strengths and weaknesses that become available to us as we age through life is a good thing. Too often many look at aging as only loss, the loss of what was, without appreciating where we are now. I like being old. I never idealized any age, though I did look forward to turning 65, since the age of 7. It was a good year. But so was 7.

It's disgusting and it is certainly not what I want to discuss, but I think that it would help to clarify Russian psychology and the danger they can pose if our media could highlight it for at least a few days because I think that having a Nazi Russian cut the ear off of one of the suspects of the Moscow terror attack and force him to eat it while filming it to share to social media is a good example to describe the Russian state.

@GreenFire I googled the report but did not watch the video, I cannot watch violent videos voyeuristicly made and proudly disseminated by the perpetrators of that cruelty, but I appreciate the stomach of others who can. I did stumble upon some utterly disgusting justifying reddit posts of Russian Nazis and apologists who lie that ISIS doesn't exists or assert ISIS is an arm of the US CIA or Israel and use anti-semitic attacks on Ukraine to propagandize for an even more intensified RU terror attacks against innocent UKR civilians.
Meanwhile Trump and MAGA join the pro-Putin anti-US chorus. Disgusting. Treasonous.

Had a dream last night where, in a moment of intense drama, I stood up and slapped the faces of three clocks, and my beloved late cat shook his head and muttered "This dream is too stupid for me" and sauntered out.

I wish I could say my dreams are never like this, but that would not be true.

The most famous one is Mordecai Richler, who's my fifth or sixth cousin or something like that. LOL. All Montreal Jews are related. My mum writes for a local paper and writes creative nonfiction on occasion, and an aunt writes memoirs and newspaper articles.

@youseeatortoise It makes a difference to grow up with close or family influence in one of the less structured careers. I knew how to seek training to be a doctor or cpa or lawyer or plumber, but I wondered how does one become a poet, besides writing poet? So I met and worked for, and was mentored by a few and it demystified an unknown.

@youseeatortoise There were no known artists or writers in my working class extended family. My parents may have hoped I'd become a lawyer. Not a lawyer. Having a relative who makes a living as a poet or writer or sculptor or composer is a privilege. Though having repulsive politics Wallace Stevens was often offered as a model as a poet, an insurance executive who wrote after work.

@youseeatortoise I got to know several successful poets (Poets laureates, Pulitzers, National Book, McArthurs, lyricists) who all had jobs that paid the bills (primarily in teaching) or married "well." None made a living only on the sales of books of poetry. I had no idea.

@GottaLaff I think this may also explain the very personal venom and contempt Trump and Rudy have toward others who are not the fruit of a poisonous rotten family tree. It's the bitter irony of the claims of "good genes, perfect genes", the "Mexican criminals", the "immigrants poison the pure blood", the "shit hole countries"... both Trump and Rudy are the sons of (1st gen immigrant) criminals. Rudy claims he never knew his Dad was a mob enforcer until later, but, yeah. Trump also deifies the racist Fred Trump.

@BigBoppa It's that weird but common thing very weak, self-denying people do who are angry at truths about themselves or their own families - they attack others with defamatory claims, deliberate lies, about other's own and family's pasts (manufactured lies about Obama birtherism, "Biden crime family", Ted Cruz's dad as a JFK assassin, Clinton charity as a criminal front, etc) to deflect from their own poisoned Actual criminal family pasts.
I am pretty sure both Rudy and Donnie were mocked and whispered about as the sons of seedy disreputable assholes, and everyone they grew up with knew it.
