Perhaps I am foolish (likely I am foolish) but something feels changed; the E Jean Carroll judgment, the collapsed Army of God Truck Caravan, the mocked rambling blathering of a "Nothing" 77 year old man desperate for attention, the rising Dobbs motivated voters in Red States, a father cruelly beheaded by his MAGA cursed son and broadcast on youtube.

It's been a terrible unspeakable horrific 8 years. Are we close to an end of the insanity? Are they running out of invisible steam?

Reading people's layoff notes the last few days, I would like to share some reminders:

  1. Work will never love you back.

  2. "It isn't personal." Ignore people who say that. Your salary, your sense of purpose and work integrity are personal, and when they are taken away without warning, it affects you personally, even if the decision to cut your position was only about money.

  3. Thinking about your emotions through a job loss as grieving can be helpful.

  4. Work will never love you back.

This how I know these are made by people who have never been around children, or possibly even women, and also never had to worry about money.

@pattykimura@beige.party avatar

@RickiTarr

"If it was possible to live forever, would you want to?"

I've been thinking about this, your, question and the conditional responses it has elicited, including my own. It struck me that a lot of yes answers were, along the lines of, "but only if...I had the body I chose, the health I chose, the political or climate conditions I would like..." which really is a no. But isn't this what life is, a tomorrow or a millenia about which we do not have absolute certainty; and yet few of us would easily choose to say no to tomorrow. Perhaps my thoughts have been informed by my work with persons whose average age is 80 (even as I am old, myself), who often mourn their physical selves, who struggle with finding a place in a technological world they are no longer part of, who face the loss of loved ones. This is aging. We cannot be afraid of tomorrow, of life, if we are curious and open hearted despite our fears, if we realize each day we have existed proves we already have the strength to have survived years of unknown tomorrows we now call yesterdays. Living takes courage. And each of us already embodies that courage.

The bluff called is that Trump's "brilliant plan to end the war in 24 hours" is Complete Capitulation, the Neville Chamberlain Plan. Trump won't say that quiet part out loud because it's Hitler, er, Putin, er, Trump & his MAGA 5th columnists' plan.

Zelenskyy is a wily and nimble fellow who has no Fs left when it comes to fighting to save his nation. He's been used once by the treacherous Trump for that pathetic photo op, he'll never be used again.

Here are the real results out of Iowa.

Est. Population: 3,207,004 (https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/fact/table/IA/DIS010222)
Est. Adult population: 2,482,221 (same source)
Registered voters 2024-01: 1,518,210 (https://sos.iowa.gov/elections/pdf/VRStatsArchive/2024/CoJan24.pdf)
Registered Republican voters 2024-01: 594,533 (same source)
Voters participating in 2024 caucuses with 99% counted: 109,405 (https://www.cnn.com/election/2024/primaries-and-caucuses/results/iowa/republican-presidential-primary)
Votes case for Trump: 57,260 (same source)

That means that in the Iowa caucuses:
2.3% of the adults in Iowa voted for Trump.
3.8% of the registered voters in Iowa voted for Trump
9.6% of registered Republicans voters in Iowa voted for Trump

Over 90% of registered republican voters in Iowa chose not to show up and vote for Trump.

That is the real story.

@dangoodin @bhawthorne Trumpism is a cult, the MSM fuels the invincibility of its adherents in their single-minded goal to prove loyalty to their God Trump by routing out the MINOs and voting "even if sick" despite the subzero temps and blizzard conditions.

But, truth is, they're neither invincible nor have all Republicans lost their minds in blind fealty to Trump.

He got just over half the votes. 51%. That's barely a majority. He's the only former President running.

What happened his magnificent majority? His relentlessly reported 82% favorability among GOP (YouGov Jan 9, 2024)?

The peril is in both ridiculing his core support and in over-estimating Trump's inevitability.

He's neither as weak as we'd like, or as strong as we fear. He's beatable.

Hearing Christian Evangelicals idolize Trump as King David, a flawed lascivious murderous King who was chosen by God to be King. David was not actually a Christian, he preceded the life of Jesus by 1000 years.

Curious that "Christians" would forsake the believed actual Son of God Jesus Christ who led a life not characterized by pussy-grabbing, adultery, lying, encouraging assassination, to justify the idolatry of Trump.

Why not support Jesus values?

AT&T is sending out letters warning they want to kill virtually all landlines (and perhaps related data circuits where fiber is unavailable) across essentially their entire coverage area throughout California. This would have devastating effects. Related CPUC meetings will be taking place through March.

Landlines provide crucial services for individuals, businesses, and other organizations in a wide variety of situations -- not just emergencies when cellular and Internet service tends to rapidly fail, but also for vast numbers of people in areas with poor, unreliable, or in many cases (even in large sections of major cities!) NO cell service, NO fiber, etc.

Landlines often provide the only available communication in a wide variety of security and safety situations, from elevators to interior spaces of all sorts where cell service simply doesn't work.

Many disabled and other persons have crucial equipment that depends on landlines. Often they are not tech-savvy and do not have friends or relatives to help them through forced technology changes.

AT&T has been shirking its public safety responsibilities for years, while still leveraging their effective monopoly on services in so many areas.

Their new effort must be stopped. I'll have much more to say about this as the situation progresses.

pattykimura,
@pattykimura@beige.party avatar

@lauren 1934 Communications Act, 1996 Telecommunications Act were the gold standard that ensured equal access to modern communication systems to all parts of the nation. Equal telecommunication access allows equal health, economic, educational, public and emergency services, access to all Americans with the cost to corporation for the more expensive maintenance and expansion included in fees spread to all users in one of those mandated fees that appear in every phone/cell bill. (When rural MAGA complain about government taxes, remind them that they are the beneficiaries of this universal tax every time they use a cell or landline.) There was a rule change lobbied by telecom to change "full coverage" to allow "95% coverage" as full coverage, and expand the coverage area to create a larger denominator to increase the 5% exclusion/unserved raw numbers as the numerator.
In the East and Southeast US, we have seen the abandonment of landlines and the refusal to maintain the remaining copper wiring, threatening our health services, educational access, and economic viability. Landlines, ironically, are a consistent profit center if you don't maintain them: the plan is to sell them off to small vendors to wring out remaining profit then abandon.

Less years, even, to continue to work -- I better get my files in order for the next person. Clean up the bedroom. Love the cat, and my beloved wife. Learn new things, unexpected things.

I am not afraid of aging, I am more curious about what life and the world might be if I outlive my statistical end and get to see 100. My mom made it to 97, my grandma to 105.

Curiosity has always out weighed fear, in my life.

@RickiTarr I never thought I would marry. The whole LGBTQ not a legal option thing for the majority of my life. Then I met my beloved in my 50s, and darn, that was it! We could marry in our state, even if denied federal protections and marriage rights in most states. (I was alive when Loving finally offered interracial marriage protections). The right to marry hasn't been universal, and may vanish again for some of us. Even if it does disappear, I am glad to be married, and to have to known this great unexpected joy.

You're wearing a mask so, if you go back to the meatball station and take off your mask, they won't know it's you and you can get more meatballs" and I said "I don't think it is in their job description to police the meatball line" and she said "I didn't ask for input on the plan, just its implementation."
