"You’ve eaten eggs that were harder than this pair’s careers. Rather than wear out their Italian shoe leather trudging between doorsteps, they have been primped and counselled and focus-grouped into place. And, as every bad-tempered interview suggests, it has left them without killer political instincts."

@junesim63 I dont know about Sunak, so I’d have to assume you’re right there, but listening to James O’Brien’s interview with Starmer gave me real respect for the man, and I don’t think he’s had an easy career, even though it probably appears easy now.

Quick question: what are you hoping for Apple to reveal at WWDC this year? I’m writing a piece and it’d be useful to get insight into improvements devs and anyone else hopes Apple makes or new things it introduces (and how they are achieved).

peteralee,
@peteralee@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@craiggrannell I want to hear more about the improved CarPlay that they trailed last year (or was it the year before?)
It was supposed to be in cars this year, but afaik there’s been no sign.
Will it be backwards compatible with existing cars?

peteralee,
@peteralee@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@ianRobinson @craiggrannell
That doesn’t surprise me, to be honest. But it is a bit disappointing; the mock-ups looked great.
I know Volvo have adopted Google as their ICE embedded software system, but that doesn’t mean you have to have an Android phone. I’m surprised Apple aren’t interested in that market. (But as a hardware company, I shouldn’t be)

Weather apps: “possible light rain”

Reality: torrential downpour

How common this has become these days gives me pause. Rain around here (south of England) used to be boring and blattery most of the time. No we get Florida-style downpours on a regular basis.

peteralee,
@peteralee@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@craiggrannell and last week BBC R4 had a discussion about complaints that the forecast was unnecessarily pessimistic: apparently the app summarises the forecast with the icon which represents the most “significant” weather, so it’ll tell you if you need a coat, umbrella etc. And people were complaining that it was being “negative” where I thought it was helpful to let you know what to expect.
Luckily for me I’m in Spain this week, but I’d heard the weather at home was beastly.

Hmm, so the couple we went to dinner with were nice enough… they scored points with me for being cool about trans kids… but they don’t seem to like Wales, Welsh people, their nearest town or their immediate neighbours. They said they will probably return to England in 2-3 years.

My take is that they really haven’t put much effort into joining things or making friends locally. They moved into a property in an isolated hamlet, most of which is holiday homes so there’s no proper community. They thought more about the view and the number of bedrooms than whether the closest town would meet their needs.

We have been here longer, but I think we were much more settled and contented after 3 years than they are now. Just a reminder that relocating is about much more than how much house you can get for your money or being able to see green fields from your lounge window.

peteralee,
@peteralee@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@purplepadma that’s a really good observation. And of course when moving into a new area, it’s not always obvious that the houses may be all holiday homes, or that the picturesque town/village might not be adequate for long term residence.
I suppose it would be good advice to people planning a move to spend some time in their destination before committing. (If possible).

I don’t know how big partworks are outside of the UK and Ireland. But they always make me a bit twitchy. I mean, I don’t want a 1:2 scale Dalek anyway. But I can’t imagine spending well over two years hoping the publisher wouldn’t go belly up and leave you with half a Dalek. (Book partworks are a bit less risky, obvs. But even then, it can be frustrating. Eg Eaglemoss went under and left a Batman collection incomplete.) https://downthetubes.net/hachette-partworks-launches-dalek-part-work/

I feel exactly the same. Do they really do the design work to manufacture all the parts needed for a model of the Titanic, which is released in 300 weekly issues? How many people can stick with them for that length of time (and cost)?

Emma and I went to see a new-build show home at the weekend.

What impressed me most was how it had been wired for broadband. Two fibre lines with different providers (openreach and truespeed) ran into a data closet on the first floor. In the closet were plug sockets and 8 cat5 sockets (of which only two were wired in - heading to the smallest bedroom and the living room).

peteralee,
@peteralee@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@danieldurrans I wonder if the non-show homes had the Cat 5 wiring as standard.
Presumably it went to the smallest bedroom because that’s the one that would double as a study.
Do you know if it had wiring for a car charger? (Even if the charger itself was absent)

    No reason why other EVs couldn’t do it, but I’ve never seen it on any.
    I suppose they could introduce it with a software update but the manufacturers clearly don’t see a need.
    I’ve a BMW i3 and a Volvo XC60 hybrid, soon to be replaced by a Jaguar iPace. I’ve never been interested in Teslas, mainly because of the very stark internal styling (and the lack of physical controls that that brings) and also because I’ve never liked the external designs either.
