Where do you live and how do you feel about it?

Obviously, don't tell me exactly where you live, no actual addresses please! You can be as vague as you like.

I live in Central Missouri in the U.S.

Pros:

This is an absolutely beautiful place, green rolling hills, lots of rivers, lakes, ponds, and natural springs, cool caves to explore.

Lots of farming here, so great access to quality fruits, vegetables, meat, eggs, and dairy.

It's relatively inexpensive to live here compared with other states, because it's a "flyover".

I'm close enough to three major cities, that it's an easy day trip, and I'm about halfway to anywhere in the U.S.

We have one of the best Conservation departments in the U.S. and this is one of the few things that is a bipartisan issue. Lots of awesome nature programs that are free or cheap, state parks, conservation areas, bird watching, hunting, boating, foraging available to everyone.

Cons:

Yeah, it's a big one, it is a RED STATE, while a lot of the cities are blue, there is a large rural population, that votes red. Abortion is not legal here. People often vote against their own self interest.

While I'm not against responsible gun ownership, lots of people aren't responsible, and people have access to guns that definitely should not.

We have very few employee protections here, while the cost of living is relatively low compared with other places, it's taken years to get to a $12 minimum wage, and it's still not enough.

@RickiTarr Northern California - moved here for “2-3 years” over 2 decades ago and can’t see myself ever leaving - despite all the idiotic stereotypes it’s an incredible place.

Pros:

  • world class and stunningly diverse natural environment
  • solidly liberal
  • great food
  • awesome climate

Cons:

  • way too many people
  • ludicrously expensive
  • has a higher-than-normal proportion of “horseshoe lefties” - people who are so far left they end up being more aligned with the far right (anti-vaxx, authoritarian, etc.)
  • Sillycon Valley techbro libertarians

@jerf @mekkaokereke Yeah they’re rebuilding in on their “Ultium” platform. I’m nervous that they’re going to wreck it by trying to make it big. What I love about it is how small it is - it’s a fantastic city/commuter car.

@mekkaokereke The Chevy Bolt probably came the closest, then Chevy killed it (though it’s supposed to be making a comeback in a year or two). I love my first generation one (before the 2022 redesign).

@DeweyOxberger @mekkaokereke Yes!! And the good news is that we already know how to build most of a high quality, safe car cheaply - it’s only the drivetrain in a BEV that’s novel and has yet to realise all of the economies of scale etc. I’m bullish!!

I really don’t understand user-hostile infrastructure like this in SF’s public parks. The main argument I’ve heard is that it’s to stop certain classes of visitor from ruining other visitors’ experience, but stereotyping one specific user group (skaters, in this example) is just old-fashioned bigotry.

Not to mention that this kind of (dubious) strategy isn’t even applied evenly. The worst experiences I’ve had in our public parks have almost entirely involved dogs, but I don’t see anti-dog infrastructure anywhere (heck, I don’t even see respect for, or enforcement of, existing dog regulations most of the time).

@suldrew @docpop Ooh I just had Ration Ale for the first time this week! The West Coast IPA was good, but I didn’t really enjoy the Citrus Hazy IPA - drinkable, but much less flavourful than I was expecting. For now Barrel Brothers Brewing’s Hazy IPA remains top of my list, with Ration Ale WC IPA and Athletic Run Wild very close behind (and an increasingly long list of “would drink” NA beers behind that!). I feel like I’m living through a Cambrian explosion of near beers!! 😍

You know I don’t even care if the numerous dipshits maliciously misinterpreting the 2nd Amendment to completely ignore the bit about “well regulated militia” are right or not; the point is that the grotesque lack of gun regulation in the US is resulting in the deaths of tens of thousands of innocent victims every year. If the 2A is the reason for that, then it should be amended!
