What's your favorite feature in Vivaldi?

remcoboerma,
@remcoboerma@fosstodon.org avatar

@Vivaldi
Workspaces are great but honestly tab tiling is my number one feature. Though more fundamentally I'd say the encrypted cloud based sink is really awesome. Especially with all the bells and whistles syncing. Though none of the bells and whistles are forced upon the user. Absolutely love that!

Not my favorite vivaldi feature but surely a deeply appreciated feature is the builtin rss reader.

The tasks: quick merging of two massive excel spreadsheets based on some basic criteria

The yaks:

  1. Cannot open files to convert to text because they are so big
  2. No problem! I have a #python script that can do convert xsl to csv using pandas
  3. Last Mac OS upgrade removed python2 (which all my trusty old scripts are written in)
  4. No problem! I should update these anyway...
  5. ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'pandas'
  6. No problem! I just need to install modules for the version of python I am using
  7. /Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/3.5/bin/python3.5: bad interpreter: Bad CPU type in executable
  8. No problem! Just need to google all about Mac OS changes to zsh, remember how to do more specific pip installs, maybe updated some profile files...
  9. What the hell was I actually working on??

What are the things you should pay extra attention to when you're about to release a library, framework or the code of your entire company as open-source? So far I've come up with documentation, licensing, double checking every secret is removed from the code. From the podcast I've learnt that hospitality and welcoming others are quite important. What do you think I shouldn't forget?

remcoboerma,
@remcoboerma@fosstodon.org avatar

@diazona
Absolutely important things to consider. Thanks for sharing! I'll work through all of it. It surely is so easy to forget some of this stuff in your own projects.

remcoboerma,
@remcoboerma@fosstodon.org avatar

@diazona
Thanks a bunch! I do like there is an accompanying blog at https://blog.jaraco.com/skeleton/

I'll go through all of it. We already have repositories that are several years old so it's not that were starting something new.
Because of that, I'll probably have to create a shallow copy of just one branch - just to make sure no secrets were spilled in old commits that a bot would find in a second.
Unless there is a scanner to scan my own repo, might try that first to keep history. 🤔

Not writing what code does, but why it does it, is a very neat way to get out of your python head and into the domain space. Works for me at least, although I still forget to document a lot...

    30 years ago, in April 1993, the World Wide Web commenced.

    Glad to have been there in those earliest days of the public internet. I was a young Amiga game developer, fighting for development freedom on Usenet, as Commodore was pushing developers to not take over the system. 🙂

    @fediverse What type of social media do you feel is lacking most in the fediverse?

    To elaborate, there are a lot of different types of social media already on the fediverse such as microblogs, regular blogs, image sharing, link sharing and video sharing.

    Personally, I'd love to see a gaming-focused social media platform on the fediverse.

    Just a matter of preference. I hack python, not php. Since I haven't found a zot library yet, and it's a too big a job to write one myself, I can't hack on zot. And I think it might be better than activitypub.

    Longhorn does even more. If you just want to post blog posts automatically, there is an rss service for that. It monitors your blogs rss feed and posts an announcement/full article on the fediverse.
