TikTok lets you talk about racism, but only obliquely. They let you talk about sexism, but only obliquely. I posted a video about a man who took on the KKK. They blocked it. Said it violated community standards. I posted a video about the women who took down the NASA beauty pageants. They blocked it. Said it violated community standards. I’ve posted other, more anodyne videos about racism & sexism and they’re fine with them. Something about skin & robes rub the moderators the wrong way. <sigh>

Question for any #harpist out there: how do you interpret slurs in a #harp part?

For example, if you see a melody or arpeggio spanning a few octaves in a bar or two, and it's obviously one single gesture, do you play it differently if it's under a slur than if it isn't? Which do you prefer to see?

I've noticed I'm not at all consistent about this in my scoring, which makes it look like I want different things when that's not necessarily so.

@mcmullin @teledyn @composers If we’re doing Bernstein anecdotes (sorry, I can’t help w/your harp question) - one autumn, he & his family were staying in Westport, CT. When the Jewish High Holiday came, they went to my synagogue. They sat him in the 1st row. There were windows into the sanctuary that were 7 ft. off the ground. I was 4 or 5, but I remember adults coming in and jumping up to look in these high windows to see if they could see him.

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic No (except with my brother), and I often ponder lately whether the reason is related to or not. I imagine that my inability to feel as much empathy as I’d like has something to do with it. Since my mother died in August though, I’ve been reflecting a lot on how my autism was ignored when I was a child, and how that contributed to many of the negative feelings I have about my family.

The women in Hidden Figures were not hired by NASA. NASA didn't hire Black women in the South until 1965. This woman was the 2nd hired, and the first to become a scientific leader at NASA.

Office vacancy rates in downtown Denver hit a high of 30.6% in the third quarter, the first time they've been above 30% since 2000, according to real estate brokerage firm CBRE. The overall Denver metro area saw office vacancy rates increase to 22.8%.

@coloradosun @samhainnight I have to ask: Why were office vacancy rates so high in 2000? Also: What did Denver do to solve the problem back then? Also: Is anyone looking at trying those strategies that worked 23 years ago to get vacancies down? They obviously worked once.

Norwegian Ken Stornes, known as "The Last Viking", made a "death jump" into icy water from a height of 40.5 meters. Thus the man set a new world record.

The Norwegian set the previous record in the summer of 2021, jumping from a height of 31.3 meters. A fellow Norwegian holds the titled for the highest women's death dive - Asbjørg Nesje set the record at 30.5 meters.

boarding the state ferry Columbia tonight at 3 am with my truck and my dog and heading 1300 miles down the inside passage of AK and BC as i have been doing for the last 20 years or so. i will live toot when i have service because for me, the alaska state ferries are a kind of church and i am a kind of fundamentalist and missionary

@seachanger Took the trip from Ketchikan to Cordova in 1987. I was on Mobile Office for Senator Murkowski, so we’d stop in every town along the way and set up in front of the Post Office to take constituent service requests. Memorable trip. Glad the government paid the extra $35, so I could have a bed. Otherwise I would have had to join the 24-hour poker game everyone else was in to stay awake, or sleep with the Australians on the “Solarium Deck.”

@RickiTarr Pastrami on Swiss at Andros Diner on Villa Avenue in Fairfield, CT. Also the Kuhn’s chili dog on Black Rock Turnpike. One’s still there. The other, sadly is gone.

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has said he has an adopted Black son, but Josh Marshall can’t find any photos of him.

“No African-American son shows up in any of the family photographs on Johnson’s House website or on his personal Facebook page. Nor does Michael figure anywhere in any of Johnson’s campaign biographies.”

I don’t understand why this wouldn’t be a clear violation of a plea agreement. She is basically witness tampering with herself. She’s completely destroying her credibility before the future trials where she is obligated to testify “truthfully.”. Please, please, @Teri_Kanefield, or someone, tell me how the law (and a judge) can be so broken as to allow that? cc @karoli.

@shoq If the district attorney's office were to ask for a gag order on Powell, she would probably — like Trump in his criminal cases — argue she had a right to free speech, Carlson said.

"It's very likely a situation where she's kind of saying, 'I'm going to exercise my right to free speech,' but one has to exercise care not to jeopardize anything in the plea agreement," Carlson said.
